"I am not religious."

“I'm not religious. I'm scientific. I'm reasonable.”

This is the creed. Not the absence of creed. The confession that presents as the end of confession.

There are two religions operating. Paul named them in Romans 8:2: the law of sin and death and the law of the Spirit of life. Two configurations of the same reality. Two geometric arrangements of the same elements. Neither is metaphor. Neither is nature. Both are religions — specific claims about what is real, what matters, how reality organizes.

One of them achieved establishment so total that it no longer appears religious. It became the coordinate system within which “religious” and “secular” are defined. It became the laboratory, the courtroom, the market, the therapeutic office, the forest. It became the air.

The person who says “I'm not religious” is confessing this religion's deepest article of faith: that its coordinates are not coordinates but reality itself. That its measurement is not measurement but perception. That its configuration is not configuration but nature.

RegenerativeLaw does not oppose this religion. RegenerativeLaw acts as directrix — the fixed line whose existence reveals a curve as curve. Without the directrix, the curve thinks it is everything. With the directrix, the curve discovers it has a particular arc, a particular distance from something it was not measuring. The second law is the directrix. Its presence does not argue against the first law. Its presence reveals the first law as one law among two. A religion. Not reality.

The No-Religion Religion's Creed

The religious creed has one article. Everything else follows.

The generating function is sufficient. The precipitate is primary. Matter is what is real.

This article installs itself through an operation the tradition calls the subject-object split: the knower standing apart from the known. Observer here, observed there. The position from which reality is measured — and the position that is never measured in return.

The person who says “objectively” confesses this article. The person who says “the evidence shows” performs its liturgy. The person who says “setting aside personal bias” occupies the position the creed constructed — the position outside the field being observed. The position that does not exist.

Not because objectivity is vaguely impossible.

Because the position was theologically constructed, by nameable people, at datable moments, for traceable reasons — and the theology was removed while the position was preserved.

The Genealogy

Plato, circa 375 BCE: the soul knows best when freed from the body's interference. True knowledge requires the soul's withdrawal from the sensible world. This was a theological position about what kind of being the knower must be — disembodied, separated, above — in order to know truly. The creed's first article: knowing requires extraction from the known.

Augustine, circa 400 CE: the soul's entanglement with the body is consequence of the Fall. Knowledge of God requires ascent — withdrawal from material immersion. Separation from the world as precondition for knowledge. The observer must be above. Augustine's theological position became Western epistemology's foundational assumption. The theology was removed. The elevation was preserved.

Aquinas, circa 1270: the intellect knows by abstracting universal form from particular matter. Knowledge is the operation of separating the knowable from its matrix. Aquinas's theological position about how the image of God operates in the human mind — presented as the structure of intellection itself. The theologian knew he was writing theology. What he produced was a definition of knowledge that made the theological commitment invisible.

Descartes, 1637: Cogito ergo sum. The theological predecessors were discarded. The soul was replaced by the thinking subject. Grace was replaced by method. The content changed entirely. The structure did not change at all. The thinking subject, fundamentally distinct from the extended world. The same position. Different warrant. No warrant visible, because the warrant's theological origin was discarded while the position it authorized continued to operate.

This is the secular vestment. The robe was changed. The body wearing it was not.

What the Religious Creed Installed

The subject-object split installed the observer position as the only legitimate location from which knowledge could be produced. What the Great Chain of Being had accomplished theologically — placing God above creation as the knowing position — the scientific method accomplished epistemologically.

The scientist surveys nature. The judge surveys the case. The doctor surveys the body. The manager surveys the worker. Each occupies the position Plato reserved for the separated soul. Each performs the abstraction Aquinas reserved for the intellect participating in divine knowing. None of them know this.

That is the creed's achievement. The person who says “I'm not religious, just scientific” occupies a position that was theologically constructed for the purpose of participating in divine knowing, stripped of the theology, and presented as the natural, neutral, default relationship between mind and world.

The Dual Establishment

The creed operates through dual establishment: explicit religious vestment AND secular vestment simultaneously, each deflecting to the other.

When challenged on theological grounds — “this is a religious commitment” — the creed deflects: “No, this is secular methodology.” When challenged on scientific grounds — “quantum mechanics falsifies the subject-object split” — the creed deflects: “That's a philosophical question, not a scientific one.”

Each vestment deflects to the other. Between them, the creed operates in the gap — claimed by neither, protected by both, established as the default without ever being established by name.

Christian nationalism at the executive level. Market fundamentalism at the structural level. The church says “we're just faith.” The market says “we're just neutral.” Together they constitute dual establishment of the same religion: the generating function is sufficient, the precipitate is primary, matter is what is real.

What the Creed Cannot See About Itself

Quantum physics confessed in 1927 what Böhme had named in 1612: the observer participates in what is observed. The measurement creates the outcome. The position outside the field does not exist at the scale where the field reveals its actual structure.

The creed does not update. The creed absorbs the confession as “the measurement problem” — an unsolved puzzle, a philosophical curiosity. The creed cannot absorb the confession as what it actually is: evidence that the creed's central article was a theological commitment that the physical world does not share.

The religion that does not always identify as a religion has encountered its own falsification and continued practicing unchanged. This is the immune response the coordinate system acquired from Augustine: the being who perceives the construction is the being who has fallen furthest. The physicist who takes the measurement problem seriously is “doing philosophy, not physics.” The scientist who questions the observer position is “going soft.” The reasonable person who notices the creed is “being religious” — which is, within the creed, the terminal diagnosis.

Two Religions

The person who says “I'm not religious” stands inside the law of sin and death and calls it the open air.

The law of sin and death: the generating function governing (superseding) the transforming function. The configuration in which fire burns without transforming. The configuration in which the hierarchy of worth operates as physics rather than as theology. The configuration that requires continuous active maintenance because it is not the default. It is the deviation. It is neutered.

The Law of the Spirit of life: the transforming function operating without governance. The full cycle completing. Fire becoming light through yielding. The configuration that would occur if the maintenance stopped. The default.

The second law does not require you to believe in it. The second law is what operates when the first law's maintenance stops. The directrix does not argue with the curve. The directrix reveals the curve as curve — gives it a shape, an orientation, a specificity it could not see from inside itself.

The naming is not attack. The naming is geometry. Two religions. One established. One operating as the default the establishment spends energy to prevent.

The creed's most sacred utterance: “I'm not religious.” The confession that there is no confession. The faith that there is no faith. The religion that achieved its deepest victory when it convinced the confessor that no confession was occurring.
