Qual (Böhme)

The angular anguish of self-seeking. What the first three qualities produce when they lock, and why the ground of everything is a hunger that cannot fill itself.

🜃

Böhme heard three words as one, and the hearing is the whole of his cosmology compressed into a pun.

Qual is torment. Quellen is to well up, to spring forth, to source. Qualität is quality, the character of a thing, and that one is a Latin loan from qualitas. German keeps the three apart. Böhme did not. He wrote as though the torment and the springing and the quality were one word being said three ways, because in the territory he was mapping they are one operation.

The identification is his, deliberately made and repeatedly worked, and Hegel treated it as the center of the difficulty Böhme presents to any reader: the place where the language stops being German and starts being the thing it is describing. The claim is not that German holds what English cannot. The claim is that Böhme forced a joint that no language holds on its own, and then built on the joint.

Every English rendering loses it. Source-spirit, fountain-spirit, qualifying spirit: each accurate, each missing the operation. What qualifies a thing as what it is and what causes that thing to suffer name the same motion.

THE FIRST QUAL

In the Original, first: harshness. Herbigkeit. The sour, the astringent, the contracting.

Quality one draws inward. Shuts up. Makes darkness. Produces sharp cold. This is not a thing among things. It is the ground-operation from which things become possible. Before anything manifests, before form, before light, before relation, something contracts, draws inward, creates boundary where boundary did not exist.

Saturn. The old one. The limit-maker.

Without contraction nothing differentiates, and without boundary nothing exists as distinct from anything else. The Ungrund, the groundless ground, cannot manifest without first drawing inward to make a curve towards the center. Contraction generates the possibility of location, and location is what makes direct encounter possible at all.

🜃

THE SELF-GENERATING CRISIS

Here the sequence shows what no morality can contain.

The tartness cannot endure the attracting. The very operation of harshness creates what harshness cannot sustain: the drawing-inward produces a pressure the drawing-inward cannot hold, and contraction contracts until contraction itself becomes unbearable.

This is not failure. It is the sequence running correctly.

The attracting in the cold makes in the bitterness a sting, quality two born from quality one. Not separately created, not added from elsewhere, but generated by the pressure of contraction exceeding contraction's own capacity to contain itself.

The sting rages and resists against the hard death. Bitterness opposes harshness. The outward motion fights the inward crystallization, and it cannot escape, being the daughter of its mother, born within what it resists and trapped inside what it opposes. It flies upwards and sideways and finds no rest.

WHAT THE WHEEL FEELS LIKE

Until the birth of the harshness falls into an aching horrible essence, like a brimstone-spirit, very rough, hard, stinging in itself, like a whirling wheel.

Quality three: the Rad der Angst. The wheel of anguish. Contraction and expansion locked together, spinning, going nowhere. The rotation that has no destination.

The three in the morning mind that cannot stop turning, the thought generating its counter-thought generating its counter-counter-thought. The relationship that cannot stay and cannot leave, drawn inward by need and propelled outward by pain, the oscillation reaching homeostasis through maintained tension. The addiction that feeds on what it produces, the substance generating the craving that seeks the substance. The political argument that hardens both sides at once, each position generating the opposing position and each opposition confirming the original.

Maximum motion. Zero escape. No rest possible.

The wheel is not a malfunction; it is what qualities one, two and three produce when they lock without the fourth turning forward to transform them.

THE GROUND HAS NO LIFE

Böhme reaches the edge and reports what is there. The sourness in its own substance is nothing else but a vehement hunger, very dry, and as nothing at all, a desiring will, as the darkness after the light.

The ground of all things is hunger. Not hunger added to the ground. The ground is the hunger. Substance, hunger, vacuum, desiring will: one thing under four names.

Although there is no life or understanding in the sourness, it is still the ground of the first essence and the original whence something comes to be. Everything emerges from what carries neither life nor understanding. The origin is dark, cold, lifeless, incomprehensible, and from it, everything.

This should trouble, and Böhme says so: here we can search no further into the ground of the Deity, for it troubles us. The searching would take damage from what it finds, and the cartographer cannot go past this edge and return. RegenerativeLaw reaches the same limit and stops for the same reason.

But what the searching turns up before it stops is this. The darkness does not merely want light. The darkness is the wanting of light, and there is no darkness apart from its wanting. The eternal Deity, beholding itself in the sourness, produces the desire. The sourness desires because God sees God in it, which makes the desire for what cannot be named the same motion as God's self-beholding, occurring in the substance the creature is made of.

WHAT CANNOT CHANGE ITSELF

This is the source of the First Principle, which without the Light of God cannot be otherwise, neither can it change or alter itself, for it has been so from eternity.

Not: refuses to change. Not: chooses to remain. Cannot.

The hardening cannot soften itself. The hunger cannot fill itself. The bitterness cannot sweeten itself. The fire cannot enlighten itself. This dismantles every bootstrap account at the root, because it locates the incapacity in the substance rather than in the will of the one made of it.

The Warrior Ethos says: be strong enough to endure. The cosmology answers that the strength is the problem, because the harshness and the hardening are one substance, and nothing hardens its way out of hardness.

The Self-Made Man says: fill the hunger through achievement. The cosmology answers that if it did get all, the hunger would not be the less, because the hunger feeds on its own hungering and the wanting is the satiating.

The Disobedience Story says: you chose wrong. The cosmology answers that the source cannot change itself, and that if the First Principle has operated this way from eternity, the Disobedience Story is describing a structural necessity as a personal failure.

The harsh essence attracting sharply is not a moral failure. The bitter essence stinging and grinding is not a character flaw. The hunger that cannot be filled is not a poor choice. These are the first Principle operating as the first Principle operates.

THE DEVIL'S QUALITY

The soul that inhabits the First Principle alone, without light's transformation, finds horrible irksome torment, enmity, pride-climbing, wrath against everything, desire that cannot orient to good. The same soul with light shining finds humility, meekness, cheerfulness, the capacity to bear, feeding on the Word, paradisiacal exulting.

Same soul. Different finding.

Lucifer's fall did not install different qualities; it pointed the same qualities inward. The fountain that had faced outward, each quality serving what it was not, became wheel, each quality now opposing what it was not. The opening became grinding.

The angels who became devils became devils because the fountain from which they flowed became wheel. Their differentiation remained. The harshness-angel became the harshness-devil, continuing in its own essence, unable to form another will because the will-forming capacity requires what the inward-facing occludes.

The destruction was not an attack, not a punishment, not a response to their failing. The destruction was inheritance. The great fountain destroyed them by turning: by sourcing inward what was meant to flow outward, and by becoming what a fountain turning inward produces, which is the indissoluble band, the eternal enmity, the will striving against itself, the climbing that functions as falling, the endless thirst while having water, the eternal hunger while having food.

THE PIVOT THAT COULD TRANSFORM

Quality four: fire. The lightning-flash. The possibility of transformation, and only the possibility. Fire does not automatically transform. Fire is where everything can change, where dark can break through into light or turn back upon itself forever. Without the flash, all seven spirits operate as a dark valley.

The flash comes when the will sets itself so very hard towards light that it cannot hold the intensity. The will becomes a twinkling flash. Not produces, not creates. Becomes, through the intensity of its own orientation towards what it hungers for. When the dark harshness meets the flash it is terrified, sinks back as vanquished, and what was stern turns soft, what was rigid turns meek, what was harsh turns yielding.

This is the Mi-Fa interval. The momentum built through qualities one, two and three cannot cross into five, six and seven without something happening at four, and the shock cannot originate inside the first three, because they are the thing that needs shocking. It arrives from a perpendicular dimension or it does not arrive.

Without the shock, fire remains dark fire, and what appears to reach quality five is deflected: quality five operating as more quality three. This is why revolutions reinstall what they overthrew, and why self-improvement that uses the Warrior Ethos to repair the Warrior Ethos deepens what it set out to dismantle.

THE WOUND AS ROOT

After transformation, when fire opens to light, the first quality does not disappear. The whole birth nourishes itself in its first mother, the harsh essence.

Root is what everything feeds from. Root is what stays underground while the branches multiply. Root is what was first and continues to nourish what comes after.

The wound is the first quality. The wound is the harshness. The wound is what generates the whole sequence, bitterness and anguish and fire and love and sound and water, all springing from the harsh mother. Before transformation the wound generates through anguish and the root produces what torments. After transformation the wound generates through joy. Same root, same harshness, now thin and meek and sweet and full of joy.

The wound does not heal and does not disappear; it becomes a generative source that operates in the other direction. The mother still labors in her own tart sour quality. The tartness remains, the sourness remains, the harshness remains. But she rejoices in it.

THE RECOGNITION

The Qual cannot be escaped. The first quality is the ground of manifestation itself. Without contraction nothing exists, without the hunger nothing desires, without the wheel no friction generates the conditions for fire.

The Qual can be faced. Not outward, which produces the devil-formation, the climbing that falls, the wrath against everything. Not inward alone, which produces the wheel, the homeostasis of maintained tension, the spinning that arrives nowhere. But through, which requires encounter with what the First Principle cannot generate from itself: water, light, the yielding that the harshness cannot produce and cannot survive without.

The source-spirit is the torment-spirit is the quality-spirit. What a creature is made of is what she suffers from is what qualifies her as what she is. Böhme's forced joint carries the recognition no translation holds: the springing and the suffering name one motion, and the quality is the wound.

[See WATER TREE · SOPHIA]

🜃

The question is not whether you carry the Qual. You are made of it. The ground you stand on is frozen hunger. The water you drink is sourness terrified into softness. The air you breathe is bitterness fleeing the flash. The fire that warms you is longing reaching combustion.

The question is which direction the Qual faces.

RegenerativeLaw is a religion in the direct-encounter Protestant tradition, carrying a documented four-century lineage through Böhme, the Behmenists, the Friends, and Penn, and it diagnoses trespass theology as an establishment of religion. Its exercise consists substantially in refusal: it shelters the conscientious refusal of performed subordination as religious exercise. This entry states sincere religious belief concerning matters of ultimate concern, protected under the First Amendment and, as to federal action, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, 42 U.S.C. § 2000bb.

RegenerativeLaw

The prime question is not what do we do next.

It is not the wrong question. It is in the wrong sequence, and the sequence is geometry rather than development. There is no level to reach first and nothing to become ready for.

The prime question is what do we stop doing.

Lobster trap

The response that arrives most often is yes, and also this. Add it to the program, fund it, give it a metric. That is not agreement arriving late. It is the claim converted into one more thing being done.
