Imaging Function

How the Fair Image Receives, Absorbs, and Becomes

Aliases: The Receiving Surface • Consciousness as Mirror • The Impression Mechanism • Magnetic Reception • The Becoming-What-You-Behold • The Surface That Has No Defense

Tagline: You become what you image. Not metaphor but mechanism—the fair image receives what it orients toward, absorbs what it receives, expresses what it absorbs. The corruption is not in the function but in the orientation. The repair is not fixing the mirror but turning it.

The Mechanism Before Corruption

The Imaging Function is how consciousness creates itself through attention.

Not: consciousness exists, then perceives things. But: consciousness becomes through what it images.

The Fair Image—Adam's original constitution, the celestial body before density—was perfectly receptive. Like a still lake that reflects whatever it faces. Like a photographic plate that captures whatever light reaches it. Like a field that shapes itself to whatever pattern is impressed.

The sequence:

Orientation → Where attention turns, the imaging surface faces. Not passive but directional. The imaging requires orientation, and orientation is the first movement that determines everything after.

Reception → What the fair image faces, it receives. No filter. No defense. No sorting mechanism. The celestial constitution was perfectly permeable—which was its glory and its vulnerability.

Absorption → What is received becomes constitution. The imaging function doesn't merely reflect—it incorporates. Each impression presses into substance, becomes part of what the image IS.

Expression → What is absorbed, the image radiates. The fair image becomes visible as what it has received. Constitution manifests as presence.

Compounding → Each cycle deepens the pattern. Heaven-oriented imaging receives heavenly qualities, becomes more heavenly, orients more easily toward heaven, receives more deeply. Hell-oriented imaging follows the same mathematics in the opposite direction.

This is not mysticism. It is the mechanics of consciousness formation. You become what you behold because beholding is not passive observation but active incorporation.

How Corruption Operates

The imaging function itself cannot be corrupted. It does what it does—receives, absorbs, expresses. The corruption occurs at two points:

Corrupted Orientation

The first corruption: what the imaging surface turns toward.

Böhme's diagnosis: "When Adam's hunger was set after the earthliness, it did, by its magnetic power, impress into his fair image the vanity of evil and good."

The hunger—the oriented wanting—turned from field circulation to object fixation. From heaven's flow to earth's density. From participation to possession.

The imaging function kept doing exactly what it always did. But now it was imaging earthly qualities rather than heavenly ones. The mechanism was unchanged. The orientation was corrupted.

Signs of corrupted orientation:

  • Fixation on objects rather than participation in field
  • Hunger for possession rather than circulation
  • Attention captured by what can be measured, owned, controlled
  • Magnetic power drawing density rather than radiance

Corrupted Impression

The second corruption: what gets impressed through sustained orientation.

Once attention turns toward the earthly, each moment of sustained imaging impresses earthly qualities deeper into constitution. The fair image absorbs what it faces. Facing earthliness, it absorbs earthliness.

The vanity of evil and good—the binary measurement cut—impresses itself into the imaging surface. Now the fair image doesn't just receive earthly qualities. It receives the apparatus that sorts all qualities into earthly categories.

Signs of corrupted impression:

  • Automatic binary sorting (good/evil, us/them, success/failure)
  • Inability to perceive what exceeds the measurement cut
  • Constitution that generates scapegoats because the binary cannot process remainder
  • Imaging surface that now filters rather than receives openly

The Feedback Loop

Corruption compounds:

Corrupted orientation → earthly impressions → constitution becomes denser → orients more easily toward density → deeper earthly impressions → denser constitution → ...

The imaging function works perfectly. It's just working in service of what corrupts.

This is why addiction has the structure it does. The imaging surface has been oriented toward the substance/behavior. Sustained orientation creates deep impression. Deep impression shapes constitution. Shaped constitution orients automatically toward what shaped it. The imaging function is not broken—it's doing exactly what it does, in service of what is destroying.

The War-Body's Imaging Capture

The war-body doesn't just corrupt individual imaging functions. It captures the imaging mechanism itself for its own purposes.

Manufactured Orientation

The war-body manufactures attention-capture:

Advertising: Orient your imaging surface toward our product. Sustain orientation through repetition. Let impression occur. Become consumer.

Propaganda: Orient your imaging surface toward our enemy. Sustain orientation through outrage. Let impression occur. Become soldier.

Entertainment: Orient your imaging surface toward our narrative. Sustain orientation through engagement. Let impression occur. Become our imaging.

The war-body has learned that controlling orientation controls constitution. The attention economy is the industrialization of magnetic power—directing millions of imaging surfaces toward impressions that serve the architecture.

Pre-Corrupted Content

The war-body provides content already structured to corrupt:

  • Binaries that install measurement apparatus
  • Narratives that locate you as consumer/voter/identity
  • Images that impress scarcity, threat, inadequacy
  • Patterns that orient imaging toward more of same content

You don't have to seek corruption. The content stream delivers it. The imaging function, doing what it naturally does, receives what is delivered. Constitution forms according to what is received.

Recursive Capture

Most insidiously: the war-body captures the imaging of the imaging function itself.

"You are your brand." — Imaging the self as product. "Content yourself." — Imaging the self as content. "Curate your feed." — Imaging the self as curator of impressions that serve the architecture.

The imaging function that could image anything is taught to image itself as the war-body images it. The mirror is taught to see itself as the Master's House sees mirrors.

What Corruption Produces

The Hardened Image

The fair image was permeable—open to any impression, capable of receiving all qualities.

The corrupted image hardens. The accumulated earthly impressions create density. The imaging surface becomes less lake, more stone.

Hardening manifests as:

  • Inability to receive what contradicts accumulated impressions
  • Automatic rejection of qualities that don't match constitution
  • The membrane that filters—only war-compatible signals register
  • TINA: the hardened image that cannot image alternative

The hardening is not protection. It is imprisonment. The fair image's permeability was its capacity for transformation. The hardened image can no longer transform—it can only accumulate more of what already constitutes it.

The Shadow Image

When certain qualities cannot be received (because they contradict accumulated impressions), they don't disappear. They form shadow.

The imaging function still encounters these qualities. It still orients toward them (often compulsively). But it cannot integrate them into conscious constitution. They impress into unconscious constitution instead.

Shadow imaging:

What I cannot acknowledge wanting, I image secretly. What I cannot acknowledge being, I image as other. What I cannot acknowledge seeing, I image as enemy.

The shadow image is still imaging—still doing what the imaging function does. But the impressions go where conscious constitution has declared "not me."

This is why shadow work matters: not to eliminate shadow but to recover imaging capacity. The qualities in shadow are qualities the hardened image cannot receive. Softening the hardening allows reception. Reception allows integration. Integration allows the imaging function to operate with fuller range.

The False Image

The war-body offers false images to orient toward:

The idealized self: Image yourself as this. Orient toward it. Let impossibility impress. Become inadequate by definition.

The successful other: Image them as this. Orient toward comparison. Let envy impress. Become lacking by definition.

The enemy: Image them as this. Orient toward threat. Let fear impress. Become defended by definition.

These false images are provided specifically to corrupt the imaging function. They are impression-devices—content structured to produce particular constitutional effects.

The fair image, imaging false images, becomes false. Not because the imaging function failed but because it succeeded—at imaging what was designed to corrupt.

Expatriation: The Return of the Imaging Function

Expatriation here means: leaving the country of corrupted imaging. Not transcendence (which often maintains the corruption while claiming to exceed it). Not purification (which often adds another layer of impressed "purity"). But actual departure from the territory where corrupt orientation operates.

Recognizing the Corruption

First requirement: seeing that the imaging function has been captured.

Not: I am corrupt. But: My imaging function has been oriented toward what corrupts.

The distinction matters. The imaging function itself is not damaged. It is doing what it does—receiving, absorbing, expressing. The corruption is in orientation and content, not in mechanism.

This recognition is itself a reorientation. The imaging surface that was oriented toward corrupt content now images its own capture. This is the beginning of expatriation: using the imaging function to see its own situation.

But warning: this can become another trap. Imaging the corruption endlessly, making the corruption itself the fixation, absorbing "I am captured" as new constitutional impression. The recognition must pass through, not become new orientation.

Withdrawing Orientation

Second requirement: removing attention from what corrupts.

The imaging function requires orientation. It must face something. Withdrawing from corrupt content does not mean imaging nothing—it means imaging otherwise.

Practices of withdrawal:

  • Media fasting (removing the content stream that delivers corrupt impressions)
  • Attention hygiene (noticing where magnetic power orients, redirecting)
  • Desire examination (asking what hungers orient toward, whether those hungers are native or installed)
  • Environment restructuring (changing what the imaging surface encounters)

These are preliminary. They create space for reorientation but do not themselves accomplish it. You can withdraw from corrupt content and simply hunger for it in the withdrawal. The imaging function images the absence of what it was oriented toward—which is still orientation toward it.

Reorienting the Magnetic Power

Third requirement: turning the imaging surface toward what does not corrupt.

This is the crux. The imaging function will image something. Withdrawal creates vacuum. Vacuum seeks filling. What will fill it?

Reorientation possibilities:

Toward field rather than object: The original corruption was orientation from circulation to fixation. Reorientation returns attention to field—the relational medium, the circulation of qualities, participation rather than possession.

Toward other-as-subject: The imaging function oriented toward objects absorbs objectification. Oriented toward subjects—the face that cannot be totalized, the alterity that exceeds category—it absorbs subjectivity.

Toward the perpendicular: The binary impressed by corrupt imaging locks consciousness in either/or. Orienting toward the perpendicular—the dimension the binary eliminated—allows new impressions that don't compound the existing corruption.

Toward the ancestors: The field that presses against the membrane includes those who have navigated before. Orienting toward ancestral transmission allows impressions that carry different patterns than the war-body provides.

Toward the wound: Counter-intuitively, orienting toward the wound itself—the place where corruption entered, the damage corruption caused—allows impression of truth rather than continued impression of denial.

Allowing New Impression

Fourth requirement: remaining with new orientation long enough for impression to occur.

Reorientation that lasts moments impresses nothing. The accumulated corrupt impressions remain dominant. Constitution doesn't shift.

Expatriation requires sustained reorientation—keeping the imaging surface turned toward what does not corrupt long enough for those qualities to impress, absorb, become constitution.

This is the work's difficulty. The corrupted constitution pulls magnetic power back toward familiar impressions. The war-body's content stream calls attention back. The hardened image resists new impressions that would soften it.

Sustained reorientation practices:

  • Contemplative practice (daily return to uncorrupted orientation)
  • Community (mutual reinforcement of reorientation, collective magnetic field)
  • Ritual (structured return to what should be imaged)
  • Place (physical environments that support different orientation)
  • Discipline (commitment that outlasts the pull back toward corruption)

The imaging function will do its work. The question is whether reorientation is sustained enough for new impressions to accumulate, for new constitution to form, for expression to begin reflecting what has been newly absorbed.

Expressing the Recovered Image

Fifth requirement: living from the new constitution.

The imaging function's final stage is expression. What has been absorbed radiates. Constitution manifests as presence.

When reorientation has allowed new impression, when new impression has shifted constitution, the being begins to express otherwise. This is not performance but manifestation—the fair image, having absorbed different qualities, naturally radiating what it has become.

Signs of recovered imaging:

  • Perceiving what the hardened image filtered out
  • Receiving what the corrupted constitution rejected
  • Radiating qualities that the war-body's impressions occluded
  • Attracting (through magnetic power) what serves circulation rather than fixation

The expatriated consciousness is not perfect or purified. The old impressions remain—sedimented in constitution, emerging in moments of stress, pulling magnetic power toward familiar corruption.

But a new direction has been established. The imaging function is doing its work in different orientation. Each cycle—orientation → reception → absorption → expression → compounding—moves constitution toward what the reorientation has established.

The Wound That Stays Open

The imaging function cannot be protected. It cannot be armored. Its capacity to receive is its nature.

This means: vulnerability is permanent. The imaging surface remains impressionable. Corrupt orientation can always return. New corruptions can always develop.

Expatriation is not arrival at a safe place. It is ongoing practice of orientation, ongoing vigilance about what is being imaged, ongoing willingness to recognize when capture has occurred again.

The fair image was not defended. It was permeable. That permeability was the condition of freedom—and the condition of fall.

Recovered imaging does not mean invulnerable imaging. It means imaging that can recognize its own capture and reorient. Again and again. As many times as necessary.

The imaging function is doing its work right now. These words are being imaged. Something is being impressed.

What is your imaging surface oriented toward in this moment?

What is being absorbed?

What will you become?

🜃

The imaging function receives, absorbs, expresses. It cannot be broken—only misdirected. Corruption enters through orientation (what the surface turns toward) and content (what impresses through sustained attention). Expatriation is not fixing the mechanism but redirecting it—withdrawing from corrupt orientation, sustaining attention toward what does not corrupt, allowing new impressions to accumulate until constitution shifts and expression transforms. The work is never complete because the imaging surface remains permeable. But the direction can be changed. The magnetic power can be turned. The fair image, even after centuries of earthly impression, can be oriented again toward what radiates rather than what captures.
