The Deed Disguised as the Future
Foresight is a rebrand.
The surveyor's seat, having been named and seen, is sold again under a new word — futures, foresight, strategic imagination — and the new word restores the market the old word had begun to lose.
Beneath the rebrand the operation is unchanged: a creature seated above her situation, reporting on it rather than standing in it. Foresight only moves the seat downstream. It seats the surveyor above the situation that has not yet come, and lets her report on a future that is being authored, right now, by hands she will not name.

THE FUTURE TENSE
The future is the perfect weather, because it has not happened yet.
The storm rendered the authored present as authorless weather; foresight renders the authored future as an authorless landscape, and the future tense is the better alibi by far.
A present deed has a hand on it that can be pointed to.
A future deed, by the grammar of not yet, has no hand at all — only drivers, signals, trends, uncertainties, the impersonal vocabulary of weather that is coming. The roadmap shipping this quarter becomes a possible future to be explored. The decision already made becomes a scenario among scenarios. What is being done is converted into what might emerge, and what might emerge is no one's deed, because it has not happened — even as it is happening.

THE SURVEYOR AHEAD
This is sense-making turned to face the future.
The same seat above the situation, the same reporting in place of standing in it, now pointed downstream. The foresight practitioner surveys the scenarios, maps the possibilities, builds the horizon — and the map is received as the work.
To have charted the futures is felt as having done something; the scenario delivers the hit the high-resolution map always delivers, and the hit is mistaken for an act. Nothing is touched. The deed continues on its timeline while the session explores what the deed might become. The futures multiply on the wall and the hand keeps working beneath them.

THE ACCOUNTABLE PRESENT
The conversion is sharpest where accountability is the stake.
The harm is authored at named firms by named people on dated releases, and accountability is the naming of that hand and that date.
Foresight converts the accountable present into an explorable future: the thing being done into the thing that might arrive.
To bring futures methodologies into the work of calling power to account is to convert the reckoning into a scenario set — to replace the question of who is doing this now with the question of what futures we might imagine.
The one who came to name the hand is given a marker and asked to map the landscape. The harm has a date this quarter; the foresight session has a horizon ten years out; and the distance between them is exactly the distance the accountability was meant to close.

THE COOLING RUN FORWARD
Foresight is where the cooling goes pre-emptive.
The cooler reconciles the mark to a loss already taken; foresight reconciles him to a loss that has not yet landed. The coming displacement is presented as a range of scenarios — to anticipate, to prepare for, to build resilience against — and the mark is cooled before there is anything to squawk about. His refusal is spent on readiness. By the time the loss arrives he has been planning for it for years; it enters as a scenario he foresaw rather than a deed that was done to him. The squawk that might have named the hand while there was still time to stay it has been converted, in advance, into preparation for the weather.

THE REBRAND
This is why the word is new and the operation is old. When a methodology's capture becomes visible — when enough creatures have seen that the workshops left the harm where it stood — the operation does not stop. It rebrands. The grievance is still real; a fresh word is fitted over the same seat; facilitators are certified in it; and the institutions the grievance named procure it, because the new methodology, like the old one, is a thing they can buy instead of a thing they must stop. The dead skin is the same skin. Only the costume is new. Foresight is the current costume, fitted now over the surveyor's seat and sold to the market that has tired of the last name for it.
🜃
The future has a hand on it now. Foresight is the discipline of looking at the future hard enough never to see the hand — of standing above the time that has not come, so as not to name the deed being done in the time that has. The scenarios accumulate. The horizons extend. And the one who maps the futures most rigorously has been seated furthest from the only act that alters a future: naming the hand on the present, and stopping it.
