THE COUNTER-ENTRY IS NOT A CONSEQUENCE
The ledger requires balance. Credit requires debit. Every entry on one side requires a counter-entry on the other, and this is not metaphor. It is the literal procedure of double-entry.
When the credit position expands, the expansion does not arise from nowhere. It is posted against a counter-entry. The expansion is the entry and the compression elsewhere is the counter-entry, and neither is a product of the procedure. They are the procedure.
Which is what makes the credit-column resident structurally unable to register the compression her position generates. The compression is the counter-entry that constitutes the position, so registering it as compression would dissolve the position the registering would occur from. Unregisterability has been installed into the position itself.

INSIDE THE CREDIT COLUMN
There, the procedure registers as merit. The deal closes. The promotion arrives. The investment returns. Each posting confirms the position: effort and capacity have been recognized, and the world is responding correctly to one's clarity and one's willingness to act.
What does not register is the entries on the other side of the page. The displaced resident, the extracted hours, the foreclosed dwelling, the criminalized survival. The books do not bring these into her perceptual field, because the perceptual field has been calibrated by the column, and the column is the position perception is authorized from.
What does register, faintly, is the increasing distance from those whose positions are not expanding. The slight discomfort when someone names struggle. The reflexive impulse to explain the struggle through the struggler's choices and circumstances and capacities. This is not a personal failing. What is operating cannot post structural displacement. It can only post individual insufficiency, so the reflexive explanation is the entry it is calibrated to post.

INSIDE THE DEBIT COLUMN
There, the procedure registers as personal failure. The hours extend and the bills do not stop. The work is constant and the future closes. Each compression is posted as evidence of the resident's insufficiency, and the displaced register their own displacement in the vocabulary they were given: bad luck, poor choices, insufficient effort, failure to compete.
The compression is structural. The reading authorized is individual. The prior occupation the compression displaces cannot be posted, because admitting it would dissolve the column the compression is being posted from.
So the credit-column resident reads the other's compression and finds the explanation in the other's choices, and the debit-column resident reads her own compression and finds the explanation in her own. Both readings are the same procedure. Same refusal to post the displacement. Same authorized vocabulary of personal causation.

THE TREADMILL
The books do not permit stable positions. The credit column must expand or it begins to be posted as the counter-entry, and the compression that registered as someone else's circumstances arrives at her own door. The expansion is not optional. The expansion is the position's continuous maintenance.
This is the deepest capture of those it appears to reward. She does not own the position. The position requires perpetual feeding, and the expansion that registered as freedom converts into a compulsion that forecloses freedom. The lifestyle requires the income requires the hours requires the extraction requires the lifestyle. She is not building. She is running to avoid being posted as the entry on the other side of the page.
She did not escape. She is the operation in its expansive face, and the compression elsewhere is the same operation in its compressive face.

THE INSULATION
The most expanded position is the most insulated from the feedback that would name the procedure, and the insulation is a property of the position rather than a moral failure of the one occupying it.
Feedback arrives through registers that have been calibrated, and the registers do not include the dimensions the displacement is occurring in. The executive does not register the line worker's exhaustion. The investor does not register the displaced community's grief. The membrane is the column, and the column is what makes her a resident of it.
When the displacement is named by those experiencing it, the naming registers as accusation. She receives it as resentment, as failure looking for someone to blame. The procedure cannot be named in the procedure's own vocabulary, so the naming arrives in a vocabulary the procedure renders illegitimate, and she reads the illegitimacy and dismisses the naming.
This is why the prior occupant's testimony arrives in her reading as a threat. The request appears to demand what she has earned, because earned has been installed in the position the request would otherwise be received in.

WHAT SHE IS STRUCTURED TO FEAR
Deflation. The position sliding from credit to debit. The procedure that registered as expansion registering as compression. The grinding that was always occurring elsewhere occurring at her door.
This fear drives the accumulation, and it is not greed in the simple sense. It is survival in the configuration's terms, because she has been calibrated by the position to read the position's terms as reality's terms. The teaching is that one is either expanding or being compressed, and that there is no third reading on the axis.
So the procedure continues. The expansion answers no question worth asking and the expansion continues. The interior grows hollow and the position keeps expanding. She inflates to avoid being posted as the counter-entry, and the avoidance is the procedure in its most refined form: it has installed itself as the only available reality and then offered continuous expansion as the escape from it.

THE EXIT IS NOT DEFLATION
Sliding from credit to debit is not the perpendicular position. Voluntary impoverishment is not. Performative renunciation is not. Each of these is a position on the axis, and there is a procedure for posting each of them.
The perpendicular position is not on the axis. It is the prior occupation the axis was calibrated to displace: residency the books cannot post, relation that does not require a counter-entry, the dwelling the prior occupant was in before the books were cut open and posting against her began.
It is not reached by climbing or by falling, by winning or by losing. It is what becomes perceptible when the procedure ceases. Not when cessation is chosen as a new strategy on the axis. When the procedure ceases.
The credit-column resident who keeps inflating will not find it. The debit-column resident fighting for inclusion in the credit column will not find it. Both are reading the same books, and the perpendicular position cannot be reached from inside them, because it is what was there before they opened.

WHY DEGROWTH IS NOT THE EXIT
Degrowth is the nearest live thing to cessation, which is why it has to be placed precisely rather than dismissed.
It is the debit column chosen deliberately. Less throughput, less extraction, less accumulation, arrived at on purpose and administered. Every one of those is a smaller number in the same column, entered by the same procedure, and a quantity reduced on purpose is still a quantity, still posted, still requiring someone to hold the pen.
The test is not tone and not degree. It is whether the answer requires an administrator. Cessation is what obtains when the posting stops, and it needs no one to hold it at a level. Degrowth is a level held, which means it needs a body that holds it, which means the books stay open and the position that decides the level is the audit position under a new description.
The same finding arrives one register up. Inflation is not the defect and deflation is not the remedy, because both are readings the columns authorize. A program that sets out to move the whole page leftwards has accepted that the page is where the question is settled.

THE OCCUPATION IS NOT A COLUMN
Which locates the occupation exactly, and the location is the thing most easily lost.
The occupation is not the expansion. The expansion is what it looks like from one side. The occupation is not the compression either, though the compression is where its cost is paid. The occupation is the page: the column structure that makes expansion and compression the only two readings available, and that posts every creature into one of them before she has said anything.
So the resident who inflates is occupied and the resident who is compressed is occupied, and the difference between them is which entry they are, not whether they are entered. The credit column is occupied territory that pays well. That is the whole of its advantage and it is not nothing, and it is also not an exit.
And it explains why the two residents cannot reach each other. Each is reading the other through the only vocabulary the page supplies, which is personal causation, and neither can post the operation, because the operation is what is doing the posting.
The exit is not the other column and not a smaller number in this one. It is the dwelling that was there before the page was ruled.

The books keep expanding and compressing, with one resident reading the procedure as merit and the other reading it as personal failure, both readings authorized, neither admitting what the procedure displaced.
The expansion is the compression. One operation, two faces, and which face a resident is authorized to read depends on which column she was posted in.
The prior occupant inhabits neither face. The dwelling continues regardless of whether the books admit it, and the dwelling was prior to the books.
