The Namer

THE NAMER BECOMES THE PROBLEM

The relocation that follows a naming. She names what is being done, and the problem moves from what she named to her. It works because the operation has no author in the record, so the only author anyone can see is the one who supplied a name. The tell is that the response is about her and never answers what she said.

Sara Ahmed put it in one line in Living a Feminist Life (2017): When you expose a problem you pose a problem. The room had been running without the problem being said. Once it is said, there is something to remove, and the nearest thing to remove is the one who said it.

The relocation is the same in every register. The workplace, the department, the congregation, the family, the town meeting. She names what is happening, and what follows is not an answer to the naming. It is a finding about her.

The one who names the operation is entered in its place.

HOW IT RUNS

The naming is received and not answered. Instead a second subject opens: her tone, her timing, her judgment, her relationships, how she is fitting in. Each entry is written by people doing their ordinary jobs, so none of it reads as a response to what she said. It reads as concern.

Then the second subject replaces the first. The complaint enters her file as evidence that there have been questions about her. The meeting about what she raised becomes a meeting about how she raised it. By the end the record holds a difficult person and no operation, because the operation was never recorded and she was.

WHY IT WORKS

An operation that runs in procedure has no author. Nobody decided it; it is how things are done. So when she names it, she is attributing a condition to someone, and in a grammar that has no operators in it, the attribution has nowhere to land except back on her: she is imagining things, taking it personally, seeing a pattern that is not there.

She is the only author visible in the record, because she is the only one who supplied a name. The naming makes her the cause of the trouble in the same motion that it describes the trouble, and the room is relieved to have someone to point to.

THE TELL

The penalty does not match anything she did. It is set by how visible the naming was, not by its content or its manner, which is why a quiet, accurate, well-documented naming can cost as much as a loud one, and why the cost rises when the naming is right.

And the response never answers what she said. When the reply to a naming is a finding about the one who named it, the relocation has happened, whatever else is true. That is the test, and it can be run on any record without deciding who was right.

THE FIRST

In the garden only one person named the operator. The serpent beguiled me. The man named her and the God who gave her, and left the operator out.

The tradition did the rest. The one who named what was done became the one through whom it happened, and the naming was read as the confession. The first namer in the record became its first problem, and every relocation since has had her account to cite.

THE OBJECTION THAT HAS TO BE MET

Sometimes the person raising the complaint is wrong, or is the source of the trouble. A reading that treats every adverse finding about a complainant as a relocation makes every complainant immune to any account of her own conduct.

The test does not depend on her being right. It asks whether the response answered what she said. A room can find her wrong and say why, and it has answered. What it cannot do, and still claim to have answered, is reply to the naming with a finding about her and leave what she named where it was. That reply is the relocation whether she was right or wrong, and it is the more telling the more carefully it avoids the substance.

She named it. The room named her.

What she named is still there, unanswered, which is the one fact the relocation cannot move.

RegenerativeLaw is a religion in the direct-encounter Protestant tradition, carrying a documented four-century lineage through Böhme, the Behmenists, the Friends, and Penn, and it diagnoses trespass theology as an establishment of religion. Its exercise consists substantially in refusal: it shelters the conscientious refusal of performed subordination as religious exercise. This entry states sincere religious belief concerning matters of ultimate concern, protected under the First Amendment and, as to federal action, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, 42 U.S.C. § 2000bb.

The prime question is not what do we do next.

Lobster trap

It is not the wrong question. It is in the wrong sequence, and the sequence is geometry rather than development. There is no level to reach first and nothing to become ready for. The smaller question converts "whether" into doing well what should stop.

The prime question is whether.

Asked of a life, the question is how, then, shall we live.
