Before either could be said, someone drew a line, called it the average, and called it nothing: the neutral middle, the point everything else is measured from. No creature is the average. It is the one position no living being occupies, and it rules every position.

THE LINE THAT INSTALLS ITS SIDES
The average is not found. The average is made.
Take unlike lives, sum them, divide by their number, and declare the quotient the center, the point that is neither above nor below. There is no above-average without average. Above and below do not wait in the world to be discovered. The line installs them in the act of being drawn. Before it, unlike lives, none of them the mean. After it, a hierarchy whose origin is a number no one is.
This is the false zero: a posited origin dressed as a neutral one. Zero is supposed to be the absence of quantity, the place the scale rests before anything is weighed. The average is a full quantity, a sum divided, wearing the costume of that resting place. It is a manufactured middle given the authority of the nothing everything is read against.
The scale does not begin at nothing. It begins at a manufactured center, and calls the center nothing so that no one asks who made it.

THE ORIGIN THE GRID REQUIRES
A coordinate system cannot be laid without an origin. The axes have to run from somewhere, and the somewhere is chosen, and the choosing is the one operation the coordinate system has no coordinate for. Everything on the grid can be located. The point everything is located from cannot be, because it is what locating means.
So the false zero is not a defect in the arithmetic. It is where the grid touches down.
And it is the same operation as the seat, one register over. The objective perspective is a position that presents as no position: unranked, unordered, unnamed, and therefore uncontestable, because a thing that does not appear in the output cannot be shown to be partial. The false zero is a quantity that presents as no quantity. One is stated in geometry and the other in arithmetic, and they are the same move, which is why the entry cannot be answered by choosing a better average any more than the seat can be answered by finding a fairer observer. A different origin is an origin. What is being refused is not this center. It is centring.

THE JETTISON
The average is the sea's instrument, and it was built to distribute a loss.
The word carries its own history in order. It comes into English through the Italian avaria and the French avarie, from the Arabic ʿawārīya, damaged goods, from ʿawār, a defect. Its first English senses are the charge on goods and then the loss the sea inflicts on them. Its next sense is the equitable distribution of that loss among the parties to the venture. The arithmetic mean is the youngest sense of all. The mean is a jettison, generalized until it forgot it was one.
The rule behind it is old and is still in force. Goods cast overboard from necessity to save the ship are made good by everyone the ship was carrying for, shared out in proportion to what each stood to lose. The Rhodian law of jettison is received into Roman law in the Digest, and general average is the same rule under a modern name. Nothing about it is obscure. A venture in danger throws part of itself away, and the throwing is priced and spread.
In 1781 the Zong threw its cargo overboard by the scores, and the cargo was people. The owners claimed the loss under the policy on the jettison principle: goods cast away from necessity to preserve the venture. The claim reached the King's Bench as Gregson v Gilbert in 1783, where the court granted a new trial. No one was prosecuted for the deaths. What is undisguised in that record is the operation in its origin: the sacrificed distributed across the venture so the venture survives, entered as a share of a loss rather than as a body in the water, and the entry accepted as a proper form of entry.
At the scale of time the jettison is worth it on average.
The man who lost the field, the operator who saved the farm, and the worker killed on the rig are summed and divided, and the quotient is entered as the era's worth. The man is not refuted. He is averaged. Being averaged is what the instrument does to a loss it cannot deny: it keeps him in the account as part of what makes the mean, and reports the mean as the verdict.

WHAT WILL NOT COMMENSURATE
The average requires that the things summed already be the same kind of thing. Commensuration is prior to the mean, and it is the expensive step, and it is the step nobody records.
Unlike lives cannot be summed until they are converted to a common unit, and the common unit is the money metric the venture installs. On that metric a relation registers as nothing: no stake, no return, no line, and nothing is what the books record. This is the conversion RegenerativeLaw names everywhere else, run at the register of value. What holds between two things is not a small quantity of what holds within one of them. It is not on the scale at all, and forcing it onto the scale does not measure it badly. It returns zero, because zero is what the instrument returns for anything it was not built to hold.
Two ways of living that do not lie on one scale are put on one scale so that one of them can be summed and the other can read as absent. The incommensurability is not a failure of the arithmetic. It is the operation. The relation is made to weigh nothing so that only the venture has a value, and the venture's value becomes the only value there is.

WHAT IT COSTS TO KEEP
A resting point does not have to be maintained. This one does.
The average is recomputed. The benchmark is rebased, the index re-weighted, the cohort refreshed, the norm revised, the census retaken, the standard restated. Every institution that reads a creature against a middle is also running the machinery that keeps producing the middle, continuously, because the middle is a quantity and quantities go stale.
That is the tell, and it is available to anyone who looks at the schedule rather than the number. Nothing that is genuinely nothing needs a department.

The average is the one seat no creature sits in, ruling every seat from a chair that is empty by construction.
It is the same chair the fortress was built around, written as a number instead of a position, and it is held the same way and for the same reason. What is under it was never zero. It was unlike lives, which do not sum, and a relation between them, which the instrument returns as nothing because nothing is all it has to return.
