The one who was pressed becomes the one who presses often enough that the pattern has names, and every one of the names places the fault in her. A cycle. A wound passed on. Hurt people hurting. Intergenerational trauma.
That account has to be refused before anything else is said, because of what it does next. Having found the defect in the injured, it offers to treat her, and the treatment runs on her while the thing that pressed her is never mentioned again.
Nothing in what follows is a trait she carries. The reproduction does not run through her history. It runs through what she was given to do with it, and at every step what she was given was one thing.

SHE HOLDS A READING WITH NO EXIT
She is the only party present at the pressing when no one else is in the room, and every form that would receive her account of it excludes that account by working exactly as designed.
So what she read is drawn in and cannot go anywhere. Drawn in and not proceeding is the first quality: contraction, the harshness that grips because there is nothing else it can do with what it holds.
This is not a disposition she developed and it is not a response she chose. Harshness is the shape anything takes when it has been taken in and given nowhere to go, and a creature who holds a reading no one will receive will take that shape as surely as water takes the shape of a closed vessel.

THE EXIT IS THE THROAT, AND THE BOOT IS ON IT
What is held has one way out, and the way out is a sequence. Tears make the yielded field, gall kindles in it, the heart warms, the warmth rises, the throat opens, and the voice carries its roughness.
The pressing sits on the column that sequence runs through. Nothing upstream is touched. The tears still come, the gall still kindles, the heart still warms, and the whole charge arrives at a passage with a foot on it.
The prevention is placed at the exit rather than the source, and at the exit it is complete, because every other stage can run and none of it can leave.

THE FIRST GRIP IN HER IS ON HER OWN THROAT
She learns which openings are stepped on. Closing the throat before it opens reduces the pressing, and it is the only motion available to her that produces any result at all.
It is not a mistake. It is correct, it works, and refusing to do it would cost her more than doing it. There is no moment in any of this at which she did the wrong thing, and an account that finds one has brought back the fault in a gentler voice.
But a closed throat is a body that draws in and does not proceed. So the first grip she ever makes is on her own throat, and it is the only grip the position permitted her to make.
It is the first grip in her. It is not the first thing in the order. The boot came before it, the exclusion of her reading came before it, and the closing of the exit came before it. Drop that order and the clinic returns within a sentence: she has a grip, so let us work on her grip.

THE MENU STOCKS ONE KIND OF ITEM
A grip that cannot release has to put its charge somewhere, and what makes the placing possible is not in her.
She is handed a list of available positions. Every item on it is a boot, and one of them is the other end of the one she is under. It is the first thing in her life that reads as relief. She did not invent it and she did not go looking for it. It was the only thing offered.
The transfer requires a charge with no exit and a menu with only one kind of item on it, and the second is supplied from outside her, every time, by the same hand that closed the exit.

IT DOES NOT FEEL LIKE BECOMING THE ONE WHO PRESSES
From inside it feels like finally not being underneath. It arrives as safety, as competence, as standing, as having reached somewhere, and nothing about it announces what it is, because the reasons for the pressing were never audible at the place it landed and she is now the one whose reasons are composed for the room.
And she holds a warrant no one else in that room holds. She knows what the press is. She read it from under it. Her administration comes with the authority of having survived, and that authority is real and cannot be answered by telling her she does not understand.
That is what makes this the most durable form the position takes: it is held by the one person who can say, truthfully, that she knows exactly what it is.

HER BOOT IS TIGHTER
There is a tell that separates her pressing from the pressing of a holder who was never under anything.
His is loose. He is not thinking about it and it costs him nothing to maintain. Hers is tight, and she administers with more pressure rather than less, because she is still holding her own throat while she does it.
A grip does not partition, and the hand that will not open does not open selectively.

WHAT DOES NOT BREAK IT
Insight does not. The grip did not close for want of understanding, so understanding does not open it, and a creature can know every step of this and still find her throat closed on the next occasion that calls for it.
What the body requires is an exit for what was drawn in: a throat that opens somewhere the roughness can be carried without being stepped on. That is audibility. Governance refuses it by not admitting her, and subsumption refuses it by admitting her dissolved.
The one condition that would prevent the transfer is the condition most thoroughly removed, which is why the reproduction runs reliably without anyone maintaining it.
