Coordination with no heading supplied. The word is new and the thing is four centuries old, and the gap between those two facts is the finding.

A chord is two genuine notes sounding across a kept interval, with nothing presiding over the sound.
Nothing supplies the heading. Neither note is caused to go. Neither one is the account the other moves by, and the sounding continues without anyone maintaining it, because there is no position inside it that has to be held.
There was no word for that. The slot was occupied, and what filled it was leadership, stewardship, governance, and every softened version of each. A coordination with no name is not received as a coordination performed differently. It is received as the absence of one.
Chordship is the word. It is coined here, and the coining is marked, because a coinage that arrives unmarked reads as though it had always been available, and the centuries of namelessness disappear along with it.

THE SUFFIX IS THE FIRST OBJECTION
The objection arrives before the definition and it is a good one. The ending is the occupier's. Leadership, ownership, lordship, stewardship: in each of them it names a condition held by someone, which is the grammar of the position the word is being coined against. To name the alternative in that ending concedes the grammar in the act of filling the slot.
There are two answers and the first is a refusal to claim more than the language gives.
The ending and the vessel are not the same root. The suffix is Old English -scipe, a state or a condition. The hull is scip. They converged in sound and never in descent, and an entry resting its answer on the recovery would be resting it on an etymology that does not hold. What follows is a figure, and it is marked as one, because a borrowing that goes unmarked changes sides.
The second answer is that every word in it is a word about how a body is moved, and that is not an accident of the ending. Lead is lǣdan, to cause to go. A steward holds the vessel for an owner. Govern is kybernan, to steer. The slot has always been about propulsion, and the objection is answered by conceding the slot and refusing the propulsion.

TWO WAYS TO MOVE A HULL
Rowing is applied force. Each stroke lifts the water the hull then has to climb, the rate is set by someone, and the someone is not always in the boat. It works. It goes where it is pointed, and it goes there because a creature is spending herself to move it.
Sailing is the same hull held in a wind it did not make and does not supply. Nothing is pushed. The sail is set to host what is already blowing, the oar is laid down, and the hull goes.
At the register of one creature the difference is her own labor. At the register of many it is the whole of what the seat is for. A crew rowing has to be given the stroke, and the stroke has to be called continuously, and the caller occupies a position no oar occupies. Two boats under sail in one wind hold no formation and arrive together, and nothing was coordinating them.
That is chordship stated operationally. Not creatures who agree. Creatures in one ground, each set to what is already moving in it, arriving together without a rate having been called.

WHAT A CHORD REQUIRES
Two genuine notes. A kept interval. Nothing presiding.
Genuine means forged. The note is pressed through one creature's own pressing and no other creature could sound it, which is why nothing a committee can grant is one and why the position cannot be developed into.
Kept means the interval is not measured and not closed. Consonance hosts dissonance and does not resolve it. Enforced harmony occupies the interval and resolves it to the tonic, and what is lost in the resolving is the evidence that there were ever two.
So chordship has a failure mode and it is not disagreement. A room that has converged is not sounding a chord. It is sounding one note at volume.

NOT A FLATTER HIERARCHY
The remedies available at this register are self-management, the flat organization, distributed leadership, the rotating chair, consensus, and the facilitated process. Each removes the title, and the title was never the thing.
The test is not whether anyone is called a leader. It is whether the interval is kept.
Consensus closes it, because consensus requires the notes to agree before the room may act, and a note that will not agree is a blocker, which is a category and not an answer. Facilitation staffs it, and an interval with someone working in it is occupied. The rotating chair keeps the chair and passes it, which distributes the seat and does not empty it. Consensus is not chordship, because consensus requires the interval to close and chordship requires it to be kept.
Chordship is not consensus and the difference decides the case. Nothing is voted, nothing is tallied, no majority is read against a minority. Unity is discerned rather than agreed, and what the meeting cannot unite on is not done, and the meeting waits, sometimes for years, rather than install a hand to move what has not ripened. Waiting is not a slower decision procedure. It is the refusal to supply a heading in the absence of one.

THE THING IS OLDER THAN THE WORD
Namelessness is not absence, and the demonstration is documented and constitutionally proximate.
The Religious Society of Friends has conducted its affairs for four centuries through a meeting that seats no one, and it governed a colony. The Haudenosaunee confederacy carried its own form across centuries the colonists watched, and the colonists recorded their astonishment that order held without the throne.
Read that astonishment for what it is at the level of vocabulary. Those observers were not watching an absence of governance. They were watching a coordination for which their language had leadership, rule, and chief, and nothing else, so the thing in front of them could only be entered under a heading that did not fit or under no heading at all. They had the thing and no name for it, and the missing name is what let the thing be recorded as an absence.

WHAT THE MISSING WORD PREVENTED
Nothing prevented a room from running without a heading. Rooms have done it continuously, in meetings, in kitchens, in the long unpaid coordinations that hold a neighborhood together, and none of it required permission.
What was prevented is that the running count as governing. A room with no one supplying the direction is entered as leaderless, and leaderless is a lack, so the refusal is filed as a deficiency in the room rather than as a form the room is operating. A refusal with no name for itself is received as a failure to have supplied what everyone in the room already knows is required.
Benefit is the capacity to refuse. She can decline the seat. She cannot decline it legibly, because declining and having nothing to offer produce the same entry in the record, and there is no vocabulary in the room that separates them.

WHAT KEEPING THE SEAT COSTS
The tell is that the heading expires.
It has to be resupplied. The offsite, the all-hands, the quarterly reset of the story, the vision restated, the alignment refreshed, the narrative maintained, the new cohort onboarded into the direction. None of it completes, because a heading that had settled would end the office that issues it.
So follow the schedule. A form of coordination with a calendar behind it is a heading being resupplied, and a form with no calendar anywhere is creatures in one ground.
Nothing is maintained in a chord. The sounding continues through every season in which no one convenes anything, and it costs nothing at every point, because it is not being kept.

Leadership supplies a heading to creatures whose eyes it holds, and the supply has to be renewed forever. Chordship supplies nothing. Two notes sound, the interval is kept, the coordination that results was produced by no one, and there is no position in it from which anyone could be caused to go.
The word had to be coined in the ending that belongs to what it refuses, which is the last thing the entry concedes and the reason the concession is safe. There was no word. The absence was not a gap in the language. It was the shape of what the language was for.
