The law of sin and death is not a law that commits trespass as one operation among others.
The law of sin and death IS the backwards firing — the generating function's continuous refusal to yield at Quality 4, its continuous push through the fire into expression's territory, its continuous occupation of positions that belong to expression.
The trespass is not what this law produces. The trespass is what this law IS.
What most creatures experience as life is the backwards firing running as their baseline. Not as interruption. As the ground.

The Mechanism
The generating function builds through Qualities 1–2–3: contraction producing attraction, attraction producing mobility, mobility producing bitterness, bitterness producing woe, woe producing anguish. The wheel. The pressure builds to Quality 4 — Fire, the pivot. The forge. The threshold where two things can happen.
In the first direction: the generating function yields. The Harshness sinks down as it were dead and soft. Fire encounters mildness and is affrighted into Light. The generating function submits to the fire rather than driving through it. This is the yielding. This is what takes the creature off the recycling loop. The Law of the Spirit of Life.
In the second direction: the generating function pushes through. It does not yield. It does not submit to the fire. It fires backward — through Quality 4, into Qualities 5–6–7, into expression's territory. Possessiveness enters Q5's position. Doctrine enters Q6's position. Property enters Q7's position. The generating function in expression's positions does not generate expression badly. It prevents expression by occupying the positions expression would have filled. The law of sin and death.
The push through is a turning.
In the first direction the orientation stays toward the radiance the creature receives through — the way a node conducts what the field sends, receiving-through without grip, because the radiance has givingness of its own and cannot be held.
In the second direction the orientation leaves the radiance and lands on a finite center. A finite center does not radiate. It has no givingness of its own. It supplies nothing on its own account. It can only be gripped. The moment the orientation lands on it, receiving-through becomes gripping — not a second act, the same act read from its other end. The grip is the occupation. Possessiveness, doctrine, and property are the grip closed on finite centers standing where love, voice, and body would have radiated.
The backwards firing is not a malfunction of the generating function.
It is the generating function operating correctly by its own logic — pushing, producing, refusing cessation, refusing the yielding that would transform it. The generating function's refusal to yield IS the backwards firing. They are the same operation. The refusal to yield and the occupation are the two faces of one turning: the refusal read from the radiance-end is the face turning away; the occupation read from the center-end is the hand closing on what it turned toward. Contemporaneous, neither prior. One turning, seen from two positions along the same arc.

The Turning
The backwards firing is fire turned backward at the pivot, and turned backward is the whole of it. The diagnostic name for the operation is the turning — the orientation of the forgetting-configuration, read as which way it faces. Not an event in the substance. Not a moment when the creature turned. The facing-condition of the occupation, seen as orientation: away from the radiance received through, onto a finite center that must be gripped.
The same turning operates wherever the occupation installs. The refusal at the cosmic pivot — the will to be center rather than radiance. The turning-away that installs a ruling center, which must enforce by rule what it cannot furnish by radiance. The anguish turned toward the distance rather than the fire, gripping the poles it projects. The crowd turned away from the body toward the altar, where the not-seeing is the turning performed in common. Four scales, one turning. The backwards firing is that turning at the cosmological register: fire arriving at the pivot and closing its hand on the territory beyond because it would not yield to the radiance.

The Recycling
What the backwards firing produces is a loop.
The generating function pushes through Quality 4 into expression's territory. Occupied Qualities 5–6–7 — possessiveness, doctrine, property — feed back at Si-Do not as Temperatur but as franchise. The franchise becomes the next Do. And the wheel begins again: the same contraction, the same anguish, the same push through the fire, the same occupation, the same franchise feeding back as the next cycle's generating ground.
Same anguish. Same push. Same occupation. New costume.
The recycling is not the generating function failing to complete the cycle. The recycling IS the cycle — the complete arc of the first law running from Do through the backwards firing at Mi-Fa through occupied Si-Do back to a new Do. The arc completes. What completes is not transformation. What completes is the franchise reproducing itself as the next cycle's ground.
The creature born into the recycling does not experience it as recycling. The creature experiences it as the way things are. The franchise that feeds back at Si-Do is the next cycle's Do — the generating ground the creature was born from, the atmosphere that preceded language, the hum that registers as normal. The creature who has never experienced anything other than the recycling cannot perceive the recycling as recycling. The creature perceives the recycling as life.

The Occlusion That Holds the Loop
The recycling holds because the backwards firing produces real relief at Mi-Fa before producing occupation at Fa-So-La-Si.
The creature at the threshold genuinely crosses. Something real happened. The therapy session that cracked something open, the community that felt like recognition, the framework that named what she had always sensed, the practice that produced actual warmth — these are genuine deliveries. The crossing at Mi-Fa is not counterfeit. The relief is not fabricated. And the genuine delivery at the first capture point is precisely what prevents examination of the second.
The creature who crossed with real relief does not examine what she crossed into. The possessiveness arrived with love's name. The doctrine arrived with voice's name. The property arrived with belonging's name. Prevention wearing expression's names, arriving through a crossing that was genuinely felt. The two capture operations — the tollbooth at Mi-Fa and the trespass at Fa-So-La-Si — function as one mechanism precisely because the first delivers what the creature actually needed. The delivery forecloses the question of what was delivered into.
This is why reform strengthens what it addresses. Reform provides relief at the tollbooth. The relief occludes the prevention. The creature who received real relief through the reform does not examine the occupation that the reform left undisturbed. The loop tightens. The recycling accelerates. Revolution becomes maintenance.

Navigation as the Recycling at Civilizational Scale
The backwards firing does not only run in individual creatures. It runs at civilizational scale as navigation.
Navigation: the creature — or the civilization — moves through possibility space from one configuration to another. The generating function carries itself across the transition. The new world is the old world rearranged by the same function. The revolution that becomes what it replaced. The liberation theology that becomes the new hierarchy. The regenerative movement that becomes the consciousness franchise. The reform that strengthens what it addresses.
The evidence is forensic, not illustrative. Kim Stanley Robinson's Years of Rice and Salt performs a thought experiment: remove Christianity, Europe, whiteness — the named variables of the morality play — from history. The generating function reproduces the same structures. Different costumes. The same possessiveness in Q5's position. The same doctrine in Q6's position. The same property in Q7's position. The same backwards firing, the same recycling, the same franchise feeding back as the next cycle's ground.
The Robinson evidence is not a counsel of despair. It is a precise forensic demonstration that the generating function, carried across the transition without yielding, reproduces the occupation it carried. Navigation IS the recycling at civilizational scale. The arrival was real. The new territory was new. The generating function that arrived in the new territory was unchanged. What it built was the same occupation it had always built, in the new territory's costume.
The recycling presents itself as progress because the costume changes. Each generation experiences the new costume as genuinely new. The costume IS genuinely new. What wears the costume is not. The navigation was real. The arrival was counterfeit.

The Law of Sin and Death
Paul's naming in Romans 8:2 is architecturally precise, not metaphorical.
The law of sin and death is the law whose operation IS the ongoing trespass — the backwards firing that occupies expression's positions and prevents resurrection from completing. Not a law that commands sin and produces death as consequence. A law whose constitutive operation IS the trespass, and whose constitutive product IS the prevention of the second law running.
The law of the Spirit of Life is the second law: the transforming function operating without tollbooth, expression running without prevention, the full cycle completing through to resurrection. The default. What would occur if the backwards firing ceased. What occurs when the generating function yields at Quality 4 rather than pushing through.
The two laws are not symmetrical. The second law is the default. The first law is the deviation requiring continuous active maintenance. The backwards firing does not happen automatically. The generating function must continuously refuse to yield. The occupation must be continuously maintained. The franchise must continuously feed back as the next cycle's generating ground. The first law is expensive. It costs the generating function everything the generating function has — all its capacity for generating deployed into maintaining the occupation rather than serving the forge.
The cost of cessation is zero. What stops is an active trespass. What stops is the continuous spending of the generating function's energy on preventing what the second law would produce if the prevention ceased. The zero cost is real — not zero on the generating function's own ledger, where cessation registers as annihilation, but zero on the cessation ledger, where what stops is precisely the energy currently spent on maintaining the occupation. Both simultaneously true. Neither collapsible into the other.

What the Backwards Firing Cannot Do
The backwards firing cannot pass through the forge. This is the precise statement.
The law of sin and death pushes past the forge. It does not cross the forge. Crossing the forge requires the yielding that the backwards firing IS the refusal of. The generating function that pushes through Quality 4 into occupation does not experience the transformation the forge would have produced. It bypasses the forge by occupying the territory on the other side of it without having been changed by the fire that inhabits the threshold. The forge is the pivot where Fire could encounter mildness and be affrighted into Light. The backwards firing is the generating function arriving at that pivot and refusing the affrightening. Refusing mildness. Refusing the half-dead-in-weakness that would have transformed it. Pushing through into the territory beyond the pivot while carrying the same Fire-nature that arrived at it.
The occupied positions on the other side of the forge are not the light properties. They are the generating function's qualities wearing the light properties' names. Possessiveness is not love. It is contraction refusing to open, in love's position. Doctrine is not voice. It is expansion refusing to commune, in voice's position. Property is not body. It is the observer refusing to participate, in body's position. Three shapes of incapacity, not three expressions of capacity. The generating function wearing what it could not become because it refused the becoming.
The creature living in occupied expression positions does not experience the occupation as occupation. The creature experiences possessiveness as love. The creature experiences doctrine as conviction. The creature experiences property as belonging. Prevention wearing expression's names, from inside, feels like the real thing. The backwards firing was real. The crossing was real. What the creature crossed into was not what the crossing would have produced if the generating function had yielded at the pivot rather than pushed through it.
The same fire. The same creature. The same seven qualities. One direction and the forge transforms. The other direction and the forge is bypassed, the positions occupied, the franchise reproduced, the recycling continues.
The yielding is not the turning's opposite coordinate. It is the un-turning — orientation staying toward the radiance received through, not landing on a finite center to grip. Push through is the turn; yield is the refusal to turn. Re-fusion at the creature's scale is that same refusal: to re-fuse is to refuse the performed cut, to decline the finite center, to remain un-turned. The backwards firing is what the yielding and re-fusion are perpendicular to — not the pole they oppose but the direction they are the inverse of in kind.
The direction is always available. The pivot is always present. The choice — yield or push through — is structural, continuous, and available at every Do.
