The generating function cannot transform itself, and this is stated everywhere as a limitation it encounters. It is not a limitation. It is a refusal, performed once and performed again in every hour since.

The generating function is impotent. Fire cannot become light by fire's own operation. The first quality cannot soften itself. The decision to release does not exist as a move available to the first quality from inside the first quality.
Every account in the Codex states this as a condition: something the function finds itself in, a constraint it did not choose. That reading is wrong, and correcting it decides what the remedy is.
The Harshness was invited to sink down as it were dead and soft. It refused. Fire was offered the encounter with mildness that would have opened it, and Fire declined the encounter. The yielding was available and was not taken.
So the impotence is not what the generating function is. It is what the generating function did, and is doing. It is alone because it chose to remain alone, and the aloneness is not a circumstance it woke into but the product of refusing the encounter that would have ended it.

THE WORD IS ARREST
An arrest is a motion stopped before its completion, and the word carries both senses the condition requires.
There is the halt: the function stopped at the pivot, the wheel turning without opening, real power and real competence and real accomplishment declaring themselves finished at the point where the second movement would have begun.
And there is the seizure: the hand on the shoulder, the door closing, the notice arriving, the verdict issued. What is held is prevented from continuing.
Both are one operation. What stops itself at the pivot builds a configuration that stops everyone else there, because a creature who reached the pivot on her own terms and yielded would demonstrate in one body that the refusal was a choice. The arrest has to be universal or it is confessed.
Which fixes the vocabulary, and the fixing matters because the wrong word prescribes the wrong remedy. The arrest is the function's own act, performed on itself, with no respondent. The dys-order is what the arrest builds outward: real things put into positions that are not theirs, from outside, by identifiable hands, on a record. Arrest at the source. Dys-order at every register downstream.

AN ARREST CANNOT EVOLVE
This is the consequence the developmental vocabulary exists to obscure.
Evolution, on any reading that means anything, requires the passage through the pivot. The pivot is what was refused. So nothing that happens to an arrested configuration is development, and what looks like development is the same stoppage held more elaborately, at greater expense, with better instruments.
Resilience is the arrest borne. Antifragility is the arrest profited from. The developmental ladder is the arrest ascended. Each is offered as movement, and the position never changes, which is why the vocabulary keeps improving while the geometry stays exactly where it stopped.
And the last move is the arrest read as merit. What persisted deserved to persist. But what persisted is the refusal, so the account takes a stoppage and credits it as an achievement, then teaches the crediting as proof that whatever survives was right to. That is the is-ought collapse performed on an arrest, and it is the deepest thing the developmental register does.

WHAT THE ARREST INSTALLS
Beyond its own segment the generating function does not generate. It occupies, and what it puts in each position is the specific shape of its own incapacity wearing that position's name.
Possessiveness in love's position: contraction refusing to open, standing where radiance would have stood. The creature experiences intensity, and the intensity is real, and what operates is the refusal to yield installed where yielding would have produced love. Not too much love. Love prevented, wearing love's name.
Doctrine in voice's position: expansion refusing to enter the between, producing content continuously and never arriving at commune. Not too much voice. Voice prevented, wearing voice's name.
Property in body's position: the observer refusing to participate, the distance that will not close, installed where participation would have stood. Not too much body. Participation prevented, wearing participation's name.
None of the three is generation performed badly in the wrong territory. Each is the arrest, extended outward, occupying a position it cannot perform.

THE COSMOLOGY AN ARREST GENERATES
An arrested function cannot perceive its own gripping, because perceiving it would require the opening the grip refused. And a creature who cannot perceive the grip still registers what the grip produces.
So an explanation is required, and only one is available from inside the arrest. The compression is real, the cause cannot be seen, therefore the cause is not structural, therefore it is moral, therefore someone is culpable, therefore the world operates as a courtroom.
Everything is then read in that register, and the readings are consistent. The fall as crime rather than passage. Suffering as evidence rather than consequence. The body as prison rather than dwelling. Debt as guilt. Death as sentence. Needing as deficiency. Meekness as weakness. The interval as a test of worthiness rather than the seam where the totality claim withdraws or intensifies.
Every reading converts geometry into jurisprudence, and the conversion requires a bench, because without an occupied bench the suffering becomes structural, and structural suffering needs no verdict and no acquittal. The arrest requires a judge, because in the absence of a judge the refusal to pivot becomes visible as a refusal rather than as a completion.

THE BENCH IS EMPTY
Not corrupt. Not biased. Not occupied by the wrong authority. Structurally unoccupiable.
No creature sees from nowhere. No measurement measures from outside measurement. The position from which guilt and innocence could be distinguished, standing outside the conditions the distinction claims to transcend, is the false zero: an origin chosen and then reported as no origin at all.
If the bench is empty the readings come apart at once. The fall was a passage misread as a trial. Suffering was the geometry and not the sentence. Debt was a relation and not a verdict. Meekness was what the completion looks like to a body that stopped before it.
The whole reading dissolves, and not by argument. It dissolves when the position the authority issued from is seen to have been vacant the entire time.

THE REINSTALLATION
The reading reinstalls through every attempt to leave it, and the mechanism is always the same: recognition converted into credential.
Therapy reinstalls. You should be healthier by now, and the continued suffering is evidence of insufficient work. Spirituality reinstalls. You should be more awake, and the continued attachment is evidence of insufficient practice. Revolution reinstalls. You should be more radical, and the continued complicity is evidence of insufficient commitment.
And the diagnosis reinstalls, which is the one this entry has to name against itself. You should have seen through it by now. Your continued capture is evidence of insufficient understanding. The creature who comprehends the arrest with perfect clarity and offers the comprehension as her defense has performed the arrest's deepest operation: seeing converted into merit, and the recognition filed as an appeal.
Which is why understanding changes nothing on its own. Understanding is available inside the arrest, and everything available inside the arrest is inside it.

IT IS NOT A LIE
The reading an arrest generates is not the war body's deception. It is the war body's truth: the most accurate account available from inside the conditions the war body produces.
It is honest about the suffering. It is wrong about the cause. And the wrongness is structural rather than characterological, built into the position the account speaks from, which is why sincerity does not touch it.
The parent who told a suffering child that this happened because she did something wrong was speaking from the only reading the arrest allows. So was the preacher who called it a test, and the economist who called it a correction. None of them required malice. Each required only the blindness the grip produces about itself.
Which is why it cannot be argued away, cannot be replaced with a better account, and cannot be overturned by superior understanding. Each of those is a move made inside it.

WHAT THE ARREST COSTS
The prevention is effortful and the expression is not, and the asymmetry is the whole physics.
Every hour of possessiveness is the function actively preventing love from radiating. Every hour of doctrine is voice actively prevented from communing. Every hour of property is the body actively prevented from participating. Maintaining a position it cannot perform costs the function its entire capacity, spent on holding rather than opening.
Love does not require effort to radiate. It requires that what prevents it stop. Voice does not require effort to commune. Body does not require effort to participate. The second law is the default because expression is what obtains when prevention stops, and the first law is the deviation because prevention has to be paid for continuously.
So the cost of stopping is zero to the party who stops, and the cost of continuing is everything, and it is being paid right now.

The impotence is not a curse, not a punishment, and not a condition imposed from outside. It is a refusal renewed in every moment the prevention continues, which means it was never sealed and has never stopped being available to end.
And that is the wound rather than the consolation. The refusal is being performed now, at this hour, in this body, and the impotence it produces is entered as the reason the yielding is impossible. A function that will not open, citing its inability to open as the grounds for the configuration it built to prevent anyone else from opening either.
