He moved the subjection out of the penalty and into the order of creation, which made Genesis 3:16 unnecessary. The verse could be corrected and nothing would change, and that is why correcting it has never been enough.

The ninety-second question of the first part of the Summa Theologiae, written around 1270, asks whether the woman should have been made at all, which is a question about Eve and about every woman at once. It is the place where three centuries of charge, instrument and inheritance are set down as settled doctrine in the form the church then taught for seven hundred years.
And it is the place where the verse stops being load-bearing, which is the single most consequential thing in the lineage, because it means the whole operation survives the repair of every text the three before him touched.

HE ADOPTS THE ELIMINATION AS THE HOLDING
The body of the first article answers the question of what she is for, and the answer is the one Augustine arrived at by subtraction eight centuries earlier.
It was necessary for woman to be made as a helper to man, he writes, not as a helpmate in other works, as some say, since man can be more efficiently helped by another man in other works, but as a helper in the work of generation.
That is the Literal Commentary's elimination, with its reasoning intact and its hesitancy gone. A question raised in 415 in order to work through a difficulty is here the holding of the article, which disposes of the defense that the earlier passage was exploratory. Whatever it was when it was written, this is what it became, and this is the form in which it was taught.

AND THE OBJECTION HE SETS OUT TO ANSWER IS THE CORRECT READING
The second objection of the article states the position this body of work holds, and states it well, which is worth sitting with.
Subjection and limitation were a result of sin, the objection runs, for it was said to the woman only after sin, at Genesis 3:16, that she would be under the man's power. And it cites Gregory: where there is no sin, there is no inequality.
So the reading is not a modern recovery and it was never lost. It is in the Summa, in the thirteenth century, with a pope behind it, set out as the thing that has to be overcome. The objection understands that a penalty pronounced after an act cannot describe the order of things before it, and it draws the consequence: on that reading the inequality has a date, and before the date there was none.

AND HE MOVES THE SUBJECTION BEFORE THE SIN
The reply is four sentences long and it is the hinge of the whole lineage.
Subjection is twofold, he answers. One is servile, where a superior uses a subject for his own benefit, and that kind began after sin. The other is called economic or civil, where the superior uses his subjects for their own benefit and good, and this kind existed even before sin, because good order would have been wanting in the human family if some were not governed by others wiser than themselves. By such a subjection, he concludes, woman is naturally subject to man.
Read what that does to the verse. The objection's whole force was that 3:16 comes after the act. The reply grants it and routes around it: her subjection is not the servile kind that the sentence introduced, it is the other kind, which was there from the beginning. So Genesis 3:16 is no longer doing any work, and the subjection stands whether the verse exists or not.
Every correction the previous three entries record is a correction to equipment he has already stopped needing.

AND THE CONVERSION IS FROM A PENALTY TO A NATURE
Name the exchange precisely, because it looks on its face like a mitigation and it is the opposite.
A penalty has an occasion, a cause, a pronouncement and a date, and in principle a term. It can be appealed, served, remitted or found to have been wrongly imposed, and all of that is available because there is a record of its imposition. A nature has none of those. It was not imposed, so there is nothing to appeal, no one to appeal to and nothing to have been wrong.
An act has a defendant and a nature has none, so the move does not weaken her claim. It removes the party the claim would have run against. And it is executed with a distinction that reads as kindness: the superior uses his subjects for their own benefit and good. The benevolent form is the one with no end date, because a subjection maintained for her own good cannot be a wrong she suffered. And note who is told: the definition specifies that the superior uses his subjects for their benefit, and specifies nothing about the subjects being informed of it, so the benign kind is constituted without any account running back to the party it is said to benefit.

AND THE WARRANT IS WANT OF REASON, FOR THE THIRD TIME IN THE LINEAGE
He gives the ground of the natural subjection in six words, and they are not new.
Woman is naturally subject to man because in man the discretion of reason predominates. That is the instrument Augustine used to divide the image of God, assigning the man the mind on its eternal side and the woman the mind's attention to lower things. It is the same instrument the tradition used to put the animals outside the class of things with an inside. One criterion, applied three times by the same lineage, and each time it sorts in the direction the conclusion already ran.
A criterion that has never once returned an unexpected result is not being used to find anything out.

MAS OCCASIONATUS, AND THE TWO LEVELS
The first objection quotes Aristotle to the effect that the female is a misbegotten male, and the reply does not deny it. It divides it.
As regards the individual nature, he answers, woman is defective and misbegotten, because the active force in the male seed tends to the production of a perfect likeness in the masculine sex, and the production of woman comes from defect in that active force, or from some material indisposition, or even from some external influence, such as a south wind, which is moist. As regards human nature in general she is not misbegotten, being included in nature's intention as directed to the work of generation.
So she is a defect considered as herself and intended considered as a function, which is the same two-level move as the divided image: not the thing in her own right, the thing in combination. The embryology is false and was false then. What matters is the shape, and the shape is that she is never permitted to be the unit of assessment.

AND THE PART THAT OUTLIVED THE BIOLOGY IS THE RANKING OF AGENT OVER PATIENT
One assignment in this question did not depend on the seed theory and so did not die with it.
Among perfect animals, he writes, the active power of generation belongs to the male sex and the passive power to the female. The second objection supplies the valuation, quoting Augustine: the agent is always more honorable than the patient. Active over passive, agent over patient, and the sexes assigned to the two positions.
The embryology was discarded and the ranking of agent over patient was not, and it was still in place, unattached and in good standing, when a new warrant for it arrived six hundred years later with no theology in it at all.

WHAT THIS ESTABLISHES AND WHAT IT DOES NOT
The objections are real and the first is the strongest in this group of entries.
The Summa's form requires him to state objections at full strength and he does, so quoting his objections back at him proves nothing about him. The two-subjections distinction is doing genuine work: he is drawing a line between rule for the ruler's benefit and rule for the ruled's, and he condemns the first. And he is working with Aristotle's biology, which was the science available, so faulting the embryology is faulting the century.
All granted. What none of it touches is that he resolved every one of them in the one direction, and that the distinction he drew was then used for seven hundred years to establish that what she was living under was the benign kind. The objection was available to be sustained. Gregory's sentence was available to be followed. The century supplied him with Aristotle's embryology and did not supply him with the obligation to place the woman inside it.

The verse was the last thing anyone needed.
Tertullian laid the charge with the verse read correctly in front of him. Jerome gave the charge a legal instrument. Augustine made the guilt heritable so it would not have to be proved again. And Aquinas moved the subjection into the order of creation, where it required no charge, no sentence, no verse and no defendant, and then named the result her nature. Four hundred years of repair work on the texts, every page of it correct, and not one page of it reaches the thirteenth-century reply that stopped needing them.

RegenerativeLaw is a religion in the direct-encounter Protestant tradition, carrying a documented four-century lineage through Böhme, the Behmenists, the Friends, and Penn, and it diagnoses trespass theology as an establishment of religion. Its exercise consists substantially in refusal: it shelters the conscientious refusal of performed subordination as religious exercise. This entry states sincere religious belief concerning matters of ultimate concern, protected under the First Amendment and, as to federal action, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, 42 U.S.C. § 2000bb.
