Two contradictory demands issued at different logical levels, in a room the creature cannot leave, with a third demand forbidding her to say so.

Satisfy the first and violate the second. Satisfy the second and violate the first. She cannot leave the field, and she cannot name the contradiction, because the naming triggers the third injunction: the naming becomes evidence of her deficiency.
Bateson found this in families that produced schizophrenia. He was looking at the pathological end of a spectrum, and he took the ordinary case for the extreme one.
The double bind is not pathology. It is the ordinary working condition.

THE FIRST LOCK MADE RELATIONAL
Gimbal lock is what happens when two axes are forced into alignment and the third degree of freedom vanishes. The creature can still move. She cannot move in the dimension that would resolve the alignment, and the dimension does not announce its absence.
The double bind produces that geometrically, through demand rather than through compression. The two injunctions are the two axes brought into line. Any motion she makes satisfies one and violates the other. The third dimension, the one in which both demands could be seen as the single operation they are, is not reachable from inside the coordinates the bind supplies.
Be spontaneous. Be authentic on schedule. Take initiative and check with me first. Speak up, and know your place. Each pair reads as two requirements in tension. Each pair is one requirement, which is that she keep moving inside the pair.

THE THIRD INJUNCTION
The third injunction is what converts a paradox into an occupation.
A paradox can be named, and a creature who names it has stopped running the operation that required it to go unnamed. The naming is the stopping. So the stopping is foreclosed by a demand that operates on the naming itself: the perception of contradiction is declared to be the disorder.
These demands contradict each other, she says. She is told that her seeing a contradiction reveals her rigidity, her black-and-white thinking, her failure to hold complexity, her difficulty with nuance. The finding is returned about her, in the vocabulary of care, by people who mean it.
The metacommunication is eliminated. There is no longer any level at which the situation can be discussed as a situation. The coordinates seal.

CONFUSION IS THE PRODUCT
Confusion is a state. The double bind is an operation, and the felt sense of confusion is what it manufactures.
She is not confused because the demands are unclear. The demands are perfectly clear. She is confused because clarity about them is inadmissible, and the inadmissibility has to go somewhere, so it goes into her as fog.
This is the conversion the bind requires: she experiences her imprisonment as a cognitive failure personal to herself. The walls are not perceived as walls. They are perceived as her inability to think straight, and the inability is the one thing in the room she cannot dispute, because she is in fact unable to think straight, and the fog is real, and the fog is evidence.

THE LABOR IT EXTRACTS
The trespass economy runs the double bind as its primary extraction.
A creature who cannot satisfy both injunctions works continuously to satisfy them. The work is the yield. She produces the differential the economy harvests, and she produces it without the possibility of completion, because completion would dissolve the bind and end the yield.
So the bind must not resolve. Anything that looks like resolution is the bind restated at a finer grain: the new policy that clarifies the expectation and adds a second expectation, the conversation that surfaces the tension and asks her to hold it, the training that names the paradox as a feature of mature practice. Each arrives as relief. Each is the same two axes, re-aligned.
The bind is not a malfunction of the economy. It is the mechanism by which effort is drawn out of a creature indefinitely without anything ever being finished.

THE DEEPEST INSTALLATION
A creature who has lived inside the bind long enough begins to issue its injunctions herself.
The outer demand becomes unnecessary. She anticipates both requirements, holds them against each other, catches herself before either violation, and finds the fault in herself when the two cannot be met. Nobody is administering this. She is.
The occupation is complete when the occupier can withdraw and the occupied territory administers the occupation from within. There is no longer anyone to name, and the absence of anyone to name is received as proof that there was never an operation, only her.

WHAT THE BIND PREVENTS
Read as a communication problem, this is a story about unclear expectations, and the answer to it is better clarity, better boundaries, better conversations about the tension.
The operation is the prevention of refusal. What the bind cannot survive is a creature who declines both injunctions, and both is the word that carries the whole of it. Declining one is compliance with the other, and compliance with either is participation. The bind supplies two positions so that it can call the taking of either a choice.
Benefit is the capacity to refuse. What the bind delivers is real and it is not that: the relationship continues, the position is kept, the family holds, the job holds, and every one of those is delivered on the condition that she keep moving between the two axes. She is paid in continuation, and continuation is what makes leaving cost everything.
And the third injunction is precisely the refusal-prevention made explicit. Refusal begins with the naming. The bind forbids the naming and returns the namer to herself as the defect. Nothing else in the operation requires a separate instrument. This one does.

WHAT KEEPING IT COSTS
The tell is that the injunctions must be reissued.
Both demands have to be kept live and kept contradictory: the expectation restated, the counter-expectation restated in a different meeting by a different mouth, the review that measures her on the first, the culture that measures her on the second, the language refreshed so that the contradiction does not become quotable, the annual conversation about balance, the coaching for the creature who is struggling. All of it is continuous, and none of it is the work.
A bind that no one is maintaining stops binding. That is the whole of the diagnosis. If she stops moving between the two axes and nothing arrives to restart her, there was no bind, only two things she was asked and one of them was optional.
Declining costs nothing to keep. She is not sustaining a refusal against the room. She has stopped supplying the motion, and no motion is not a labor.

Neither of the two was ever the end of it. The end was the third dimension, and the third injunction is what stands in it.
She is not failing to think clearly. She is thinking clearly in a room built so that clear thought about the room registers as her disorder.
