Two injunctions. Contradictory demands at different logical levels. Satisfy the first and violate the second. Satisfy the second and violate the first. The creature cannot leave the field. The creature cannot name the contradiction without triggering the third injunction: the naming itself becomes evidence of the creature's deficiency.
Bateson found this structure in families producing schizophrenia. He was looking at the pathological end of a spectrum. The double bind is not pathology. It is infrastructure.
The double bind is the war body's First Lock made relational. The First Lock is two axes forcibly aligned, the third degree of freedom vanishing — gimbal lock, the creature unable to move in the dimension that would resolve the forced alignment. The double bind produces this geometrically through demand rather than through pure structural compression. The two injunctions are the two aligned axes. Any movement satisfies one and violates the other. The third dimension — the one in which both demands could be seen as the single operation they are — becomes unreachable from inside the bind's coordinate system.
The third injunction is what converts double bind from paradox into occupation. Paradox can be named. The creature that names the paradox steps outside its coordinates. The third injunction prevents the step: it declares that the naming is the problem. The creature that says "these demands contradict each other" is told that her perception of contradiction reveals her disorder, her rigidity, her failure to hold complexity. The metacommunication is eliminated. The coordinates seal.
The double bind is not confusion. Confusion is a state. The double bind is an architecture that produces a felt sense of confusion as its operational product, so that the creature experiences her imprisonment as a cognitive failure personal to herself.
The trespass economy uses the double bind as its primary labor-extraction mechanism. The creature who cannot satisfy both injunctions works continuously to satisfy them — producing the differential the trespass economy harvests — without the possibility of completion, because completion would dissolve the bind. The bind must not resolve. Its function is the continuous production of the attempt.
The double bind's deepest installation: the creature who has lived inside it long enough begins to generate its injunctions internally. The outer structure becomes unnecessary. The creature administers her own gimbal lock. The occupation is complete when the occupier can withdraw and the occupied territory administers the occupation from within.
