Matilda Gage
The Church-State Compression as Measurement Apparatus
Gage published Woman, Church, and State, arguing the church was responsible for women's oppression throughout history. She believed the church's resistance to women's equality was foundational to other church beliefs and that the church gained power through influencing marriage and education laws.

Gage identified that Christianity didn't merely add oppression to an existing system—it was the apparatus that created the measurable coordinates within which "woman" could only appear as subordinate. The church-state fusion was the vanishing point from which all subsequent observation organized reality.
The Naturalization Violence
Gage argued that women once held significant power in societies governed by matriarchal systems, and she illuminated the injustices faced by women as a result of patriarchal structures that have taken their place.

The Haudenosaunee Perpendicular
Elizabeth Cady Stanton, Matilda Joslyn Gage, and Lucretia Mott drew inspiration for their vision of women as full participants in American society from the matrilineal culture of the Haudenosaunee.
In her 1893 work, she cited the Iroquois society as a 'matriarchate' in which women had true power, noting that a system of descent through the female line and female property rights led to a more equal relationship between men and women.
The Wolf Clan of the Mohawk Nation offered her an honorary adoption. They gave her the name Karonienhawi, meaning "she who holds the sky."
The Haudenosaunee weren't a reform of Euro-American patriarchy. The Haudenosaunee operate on perpendicular coordinates entirely. Gage didn't seek to improve coverture—she witnessed an actual alternative attractor geometry. She saw women who existed in dimensions the Master's House had declared impossible. This is liberation: finding circulation patterns outside the resonance capture of domination.
The Witch Trials as Measurement Violence
Gage devoted extensive analysis to the European witch trials. Her son-in-law L. Frank Baum, author of The Wonderful Wizard of Oz is a nod to Gage's research on the history of the stereotype from her 1893 book Woman, Church and State.
She recognized that the witch was not simply a scapegoat but the name for what the measurement apparatus could not contain. Wise women, healers, those who held non-institutional knowledge—they occupied dimensions the church-state compression could not map. The burning wasn't punishment; it was elimination of evidence that alternative coordinates existed.
Her Erasure as Pattern Confirmation
Gage, who had been critical of religion throughout her suffrage career, was largely excluded from history until 1972, when feminist scholar Sally Roesch Wagner arranged for an influential reprinting of Woman, Church, and State. Anthony and other leaders had "pushed" or "squeezed" Gage out of the mainstream movement, ensuring that her contributions were downplayed or erased.
The suffrage movement itself performed the compression. Anthony wanted the vote. Gage wanted to name the apparatus that made votelessness possible. Anthony sought reform within the constitutional framework. Gage identified the framework itself as predatory geometry. The movement chose legibility over dimensional fidelity—and Gage was erased precisely because she operated at catastrophe boundaries where synthetic coherence fails.
The "Natural Right" Perpendicular
Gage expressed her criticism of the Woman's Christian Temperance Union's believes that women deserve the right to vote for their feminine morality, and not for their natural right as human beings.
This distinction is crucial. The WCTU argued women should vote because they were essentially different—their "feminine morality" would purify politics. This accepts the i⁰ = 1 coordinate system and merely assigns women a special position within it.
Gage argued for natural right—which refuses the measurement cut that created "feminine" as a lesser derivative of "human."
- Historical precedent for dimensional navigation. Gage's encounter with the Haudenosaunee demonstrates that alternative attractor geometries aren't speculative—they existed and were systematically erased.
- The church-state-property triangle mapped early. The coverture-constitution-originalism attractor pattern, Gage identified in 1893 as church-state-property. Same triangulated stabilization of the Master's House.
- The cost of dimensional witness. Gage was erased for naming what should remain invisible. In the 1990s, scientist Margaret Rossiter coined the term "Matilda effect" in honor of Gage. The term refers to when women scientists receive less or no credit for the work they do in the field. Her erasure became a pattern name—the mechanism that devours those who perceive the apparatus.
- The impossible refusal she confronted. Gage understood there is no "outside" to patriarchy from which women can refuse in the way Indigenous nations refuse settler sovereignty. She confronted the topological trap decades before it could be mathematically articulated.
- The Oz transmission. "Matilda saw equality there in a way that she had never had an opportunity to see it in white culture... when Frank joined the family I'm sure he got to see it as well." The Wizard of Oz—a world ruled by women, where "wizards" are revealed as frauds behind curtains, where a girl from Kansas navigates impossible terrain—carries Gage's dimensional perception into popular consciousness. Pattern survives through story when analysis is burned.
The gravestone confession:
"There is a word sweeter than mother, home, or heaven—that word is liberty."
She refused the coordinates—mother, home, heaven—through which women's being was measured. She named what those coordinates were designed to obscure: the dimension they had to murder to make measurable.
