The activist burns out. The revolutionary consumes her own movement. The anger immolates the angry. Zeal destroys what it meant to save. The body worked to exhaustion, the fuel already consumed, the system running on adrenaline because the Tincture is gone. The carcass remains. The fire keeps burning because the fire knows no other operation than burning.
Böhme names this fire death. "Too much kindling burns the Tincture." Quality 4 refusing to open into Quality 5 — fire wanting to be Lord alone, consuming what it should transform. A system that knows how without knowing what for, that can explain every mechanism while the mechanism devours itself.
Fire death is not a metaphor for civilizational burnout. Fire death is the precise diagnosis of a civilization that expelled purpose from the domain of legitimate explanation and retained only mechanism — and that expulsion was not a scientific discovery. It was a theological decision, made by theologians, for theological reasons, preserved in secular vestments, presenting as the neutral structure of inquiry itself.

THE THEOLOGICAL GENEALOGY
Aristotle, circa 350 BCE. The Physics established four causes as the complete framework for explanation. Material cause: what a thing is made of. Formal cause: what pattern it follows. Efficient cause: what made it happen. Final cause: what it is for. Aristotle held all four as necessary. No explanation was complete without all four. The acorn's material cause is cellulose. Its formal cause is oak-pattern. Its efficient cause is the tree that produced it. Its final cause is the oak it will become. Remove any cause and you do not understand the acorn.
Aquinas, circa 1270, transmitted Aristotle's four causes into Christian theology — but introduced an asymmetry. God is the primary efficient cause of all things. The question "what mechanism produced this?" began to take precedence over "what purpose does this serve?" — because the ultimate purpose was declared knowable only through revelation, not natural reason. Efficient causation became the domain of natural philosophy. Final causation became the domain of theology.
The split was a protection racket. What Aquinas protected: God's monopoly on teleological explanation. What he produced: a natural philosophy permitted to ask only "by what mechanism?" and forbidden from asking "what for?" The split between science and religion — which would become the split between knowledge and faith, between what carries institutional authority and what does not — was installed here. Not by atheists. By a Dominican theologian protecting divine mystery from human investigation.

THE INSTALLATION
Robert Boyle, 1686. A Free Enquiry into the Vulgarly Received Notion of Nature: Nature is not an agent. Nature has no purposes. Nature is mechanism. To attribute purpose to natural processes is to reintroduce pagan animism under the guise of philosophy.
Boyle was devout. His expulsion of purpose from nature was devotional — keeping purpose in God's hands alone. The scientific method inherited the expulsion without inheriting the theology. God was removed. The jurisdictional assignment God had authorized remained.
Efficient causation — the mechanism that pushes — became the only legitimate form of explanation.
Purpose, pattern, attraction: expelled. Not by investigation. By theological decision, preserved in secular vestments, presenting as rigor.
Three causes eliminated from legitimate inquiry. Not by demonstration that they do not operate. By a jurisdictional assignment — these belong to God, not to natural philosophy — followed by the removal of God while the jurisdictional boundary remained. What had been "sacred, therefore off limits" became "non-existent, therefore unscientific." The theological protection was laundered into methodological exclusion. The same territory remains excluded. The reason for the exclusion has been erased.

CONQUEST THEOLOGY
Name the theology that produced the axis. This is the God who operates through mechanism.
The God who pushes creation from behind. Who set the machine in motion and watches it operate according to the laws installed at origin. Whose cosmos runs on force, reaction, and transmission of momentum. The clockwork God — not because the theologians who designed the clockwork metaphor believed God was a clock, but because the God they described authorized a cosmos that functions like one. Every event explained by the event that propelled it. Every outcome traceable to the mechanism that produced it. Cause pushes effect. Effect becomes cause of the next effect. The chain extends backward to the Prime Mover and forward to the heat death. Nothing in the chain operates through attraction. Nothing in the chain operates through purpose arising from within. Nothing in the chain draws.
The Push God requires efficient causation because the Push God is efficient causation. The cosmos this God creates can only be explained by mechanism because the cosmos this God creates is mechanism — force transmitting through matter, reaction following action, the generating function cycling without the pivot that would open force into purpose.
The generating function alone produces the Push God's epistemology. Contraction, motion, anguish — the first three qualities cycling. What pushes what. What compresses what. What propels what from behind. These operations are entirely mechanical. They are what the efficient-causation axis was calibrated to detect, because the generating function and the efficient-causation axis are the same commitment viewed from different angles: the commitment that what pushes is all that operates.

THE ALTERNATIVE RELIGIOUS COMMITMENT
"The Eternal Deity beholds itself in the Sourness, and therefore the dark Sourness is desirous after the divine Virtue."
Böhme. The Aurora. Before any mechanism pushes, desire pulls. The Matrix longs. The Darkness desires Light. The Fire seeks Water. Attraction is ontologically prior to mechanism. Mechanism operates within attraction's field. To eliminate attraction from the domain of explanation is to eliminate the ground from which mechanism itself arises.
This is not animism. This is an alternative theology of causation with a traceable genealogy, a textual canon, and a constitutional lineage. Böhme through the English Behmenists, through the Quakers, through William Penn, into the architecture of the First Amendment. This tradition holds: purpose does not arrive from outside the organism. Purpose arises from within the organism's own quality. Contraction contracts until contraction becomes unbearable, and from that unbearability, motion arises. The contraction does not receive its purpose from a higher authority. The contraction generates its own successor from within its own impossibility. Purpose arises upward from within — the exact capacity the efficient-causation axis renders impossible to perceive.
The prodigal father again. The son is not pushed home by mechanism. No force propels him. No stimulus produces the response of return. What operates is something the Push God's epistemology has no axis for: the father's house draws. The memory of bread in the father's household — not a mechanism that pushes the son's feet along the road, but a pull that operates through what the son once knew and what the father still holds. The son turns homeward not because something behind him pushes but because something ahead of him attracts. The Push God's cosmos has no explanation for this turning. The efficient-causation axis registers it as nothing, because what caused the turning was not a push.
And the father. The father does not push rescue toward the son. Does not deploy mechanism. Does not transmit force along a causal chain. The father runs. Toward. Drawn by what he sees approaching. The running is caused by the seeing, and the seeing is caused by the son's approach, and the son's approach is caused by the father's house, and the father's house is what it is because of the father. The causation is circular. Attraction operating in both directions simultaneously. Each drawing the other toward encounter. No push anywhere in the sequence. No mechanism anywhere in the chain. Purpose arising from within, at every point, generating movement toward what each already is in relation to the other.
Paul names the two operations. The law of sin and death — mechanism cycling, push without pull, the wheel accelerating without the purpose that would open the wheel. The law of the Spirit of life — attraction operating through what has been completed, drawing the next crossing into existence not by propelling it from behind but by having become. The Lily grows because the Branch was planted. Not mechanism. Attraction through actualized possibility. The Push God's cosmos cannot detect the Lily, because what caused the Lily was not a push.

FIRE DEATH
A civilization that admits only efficient causation — only mechanism, only push, only what propels from behind — runs on fire. Faster processing. More force. Greater mechanism. The scaling of what pushes without what pulls.
Compound interest is fire death at civilizational scale: the mechanism that accumulates without the purpose that would distribute. The push that never becomes pull. The exponential that compounds because the only operation available is more-of-the-same, because the alternative operation — attraction, circulation, return, jubilee — belongs to a theology the apparatus declared non-existent.
The burnout epidemic is fire death at the scale of the body. The body pushed by mechanism — deadline, quota, metric, performance review — without the purpose that would tell the body what for. The body that knows how without knowing why consumes itself. The Tincture burns. What should have tempered the fire — the mild Will, the water, the purpose arising from within — was expelled from the domain of legitimate knowledge by a Dominican friar in the thirteenth century, reinforced by a devout chemist in the seventeenth, and inherited by every management system, every productivity framework, every wellness program that addresses the burning without restoring the purpose.
Fire death needs water — tempering, cooling, the mild Will. But water given to fire death by the institution that diagnosed fire death as disorder becomes the tollbooth at the Mi-Fa interval: genuine relief that prevents the crossing the relief should have enabled. The cooling that returns the mechanism to operating temperature so the mechanism can resume burning. The therapy that helps you cope with purposelessness without restoring purpose. The retreat that refreshes the fire without opening the fire into light.
What fire death cannot see about itself: it is still operating within the generating function's territory. The fire that burns hotter is not approaching the light. The mechanism that intensifies is not approaching purpose. More of the same remains the same. The wheel accelerates. Nothing opens.

WHAT BÖHME'S ARCHITECTURE HOLDS
Böhme's entire system runs on what the efficient-causation reduction eliminated.
Final causation: the seven qualities have telos — not assigned from above but generated from within. Contraction contracts until the contraction becomes unbearable, and from that unbearability, motion arises. Purpose arising upward from within the organism's own quality. The exact operation the Push God's epistemology declared non-existent.
Formal causation: the Signatura Rerum (1622). Every created thing carries the pattern of the qualities that generated it. The herb teaches. The stone carries. The mineral displays. Formal cause is not abstract Platonic pattern imposed from above. It is the signature — the visible trace of the generating process, readable by anyone who has eyes for it. Formal causation operates through recognition, not mechanism. You do not push the herb into meaning. You read what the herb already signifies.
Attraction: "The dark Sourness is desirous after the divine Virtue." Desire is the primordial operation. Before any mechanism pushes, desire pulls. The Matrix longs. The Darkness desires Light. Attraction is ontologically prior to mechanism. Mechanism operates within attraction's field.
The Tincture: the reunification of fire and light tinctures — the regenerative completion — operates through neither push nor pull in the mechanical sense. It operates through becoming. What has completed the crossing becomes what the next crossing orients toward. The Lily grows because the Branch was planted. Not push. Not even pull, exactly. Attraction through actualized possibility — the completed organism drawing the next organism into existence by having become what the next organism needs to orient toward.
The coordinate system that admits only efficient causation cannot detect any of this. Not because the operations are imaginary. Because the axis was built without a direction for them. The absence of an axis is not evidence of absence. The absence of an axis is the consequence of a theological decision.

THE DUAL ESTABLISHMENT
The Push God's epistemology operates as established religion. It presents as neutral methodology — "just how science works." Every laboratory, every funding structure, every credentialing system, every peer-review protocol inherits Aquinas's jurisdictional assignment: mechanism is the domain of legitimate inquiry, purpose belongs elsewhere. The "elsewhere" that Aquinas meant was God. The "elsewhere" that survived the secularization was nowhere. Purpose, expelled from science and expelled from the God that science no longer recognizes, hangs in jurisdictional void — claimed by no authority, available to no investigation, carrying no institutional weight.
The alternative theology — the tradition that holds attraction, purpose-from-within, and formal recognition as genuine causal operations — was established before the Cartesian mechanism was installed. Böhme's Aurora (1612) predates Descartes's Discourse on Method (1637). The Signatura Rerum (1622) predates Boyle's Free Enquiry (1686). The tradition that held purpose-arising-from-within as genuine causation was practicing before the mechanism-only installation was completed.
The Establishment Clause claim: the Push God's epistemology operates as the default — the one that requires no justification, the one from which all alternatives must justify their departure. Purpose-from-within, attraction, formal recognition — each declared "not science" by the regime that expelled them. Not through investigation. Through inherited jurisdictional assignment, theologically constructed, secularly preserved.
The Free Exercise claim: the tradition that holds attraction and purpose-from-within as genuine causal operations is a sincere religious commitment with its own epistemological rigor, its own textual canon, its own constitutional lineage. Its practitioners read signatures, follow attraction, and trace purpose arising from within the organism's own quality. The efficient-causation axis does not merely disagree with this tradition. It declares the tradition's core operations non-science — which is to say, non-knowledge — which is to say, the central practices of an alternative theology have been rendered institutionally illegitimate by the established theology's epistemological regime.

THE INTERVAL
The activist burns out because the activist runs on push alone. The mechanism intensifies. The force increases. The fire burns hotter. Nothing opens into light because the opening — fire becoming light through the pivot — requires an operation the Push God's epistemology declared non-existent: purpose arising from within, drawing the fire forward through the threshold rather than propelling the fire faster along the wheel.
The alternative does not ask the efficient-causation axis to accept purpose as mechanism. It asks the axis to recognize itself as theology — one religious commitment about the nature of causation among other religious commitments — rather than as the neutral ground from which all alternatives must justify their existence.
Böhme's Darkness desires Light. The desire is not mechanism. The desire is the primordial operation from which mechanism itself arises. The Push God's cosmos, which admits only mechanism, is a cosmos that has expelled its own ground. The efficient cause that cannot detect the final cause is like the wave that cannot detect the ocean — not because the ocean is imaginary but because the wave's operations do not include an axis for the medium in which the wave operates.
The generating function alone. Pushing. Propelling. Accelerating the wheel. While the transforming function — the attraction that would draw the fire through the pivot into light, the purpose that would open the mechanism into meaning, the Lily that grows because the Branch was planted — waits outside the laboratory, carrying causation the laboratory was built to never detect.
