Rank

Two words that are not related. The noun is a row; the adjective is proud, overbearing, and grown past proportion. What joins them is not a root. It is that ranking requires a single axis, no such axis is ever found, and every one that is built has a hand on the weights.

State the unrelatedness first, or the entry becomes the folk etymology this body of work refuses everywhere else.

Rank the noun is the row, the file, the position in a series, arriving through Old French from a Germanic word for a ring. Rank the adjective is a separate word, Old English ranc: proud, overbearing, showy, haughty, full-grown. Two words, one sound, no shared root. They converged, and the convergence is not the finding.

The finding is in the operation the noun names, and the arc the adjective ran is where the operation ends up.

WHAT A RANKING REQUIRES BEFORE IT CAN BEGIN

To rank is to require that every pair be comparable. Not most pairs. Every pair. A ranking with a gap in it is not a ranking.

Almost nothing that gets ranked is comparable at every pair. A surgeon and a paediatrician. Two poems. Two watersheds. Two candidates strong on different grounds. In each case some pairs order cleanly and others do not order at all, which is not a shortage of data but the actual shape of the comparison.

Producing the ranking means resolving every one of those non-orderings, and there is no way to resolve them out of the material, because the material is what failed to order. They are resolved by a decision, and once the ranking exists the decision is not recoverable from it. The output looks the same whether the pair genuinely ordered or was made to.

Which is the cut, arriving as arithmetic. What was many-dimensional and partly incomparable comes back as one line with everyone on it, and the line reports itself as found.

THE AXIS HAS TO BE BUILT, AND SOMEBODY BUILDS IT

Every composite ranking runs on weights: this factor counts for this much, that one for that much. The weights are never in the data. They are chosen, and changing them reorders the list.

The law school rankings are the clearest specimen because the schools finally said so. When Yale and Harvard withdrew from the U.S. News rankings in late 2022, and much of the field followed, the stated objection was not that the numbers were wrong. It was that the weighting rewarded what the compiler had decided to reward, and that the schools had been reshaping themselves to it.

Whoever sets the weights sets the order, and the order then presents as a measurement of the thing rather than of the weights. That is the whole mechanism. It requires no dishonesty at any step: honest inputs, disclosed formula, arithmetic anyone can check, and a result that is a decision wearing a number.

AND THERE IS NO NEUTRAL WAY TO COMBINE RANKINGS

The narrow version of Arrow's result, and it should be stated narrowly, because the wide version is not what he proved.

For three or more options, no rule for combining individual orderings into one collective ordering can satisfy all of the following at once: it accepts any set of individual orderings; if everyone prefers one option to another the collective ordering does too; the collective ordering of two options depends only on how individuals ordered those two; and no single individual's ordering decides the result.

That is a result about aggregating preferences and it is not a proof that ranking is impossible. What it establishes is that combining rankings always spends one of those conditions, and which one gets spent is a choice made by whoever built the rule. The residue is not error. It is authorship, and the output does not carry a mark saying so.

THE FORCED DISTRIBUTION MANUFACTURES ITS OWN BOTTOM

Stack ranking is the operation with the pretence removed.

Under the vitality curve Jack Welch ran at General Electric, employees were sorted into a top fifth, a middle seventy per cent, and a bottom tenth, and the bottom tenth were managed out. Microsoft ran a version of it until abandoning the practice in 2013, and General Electric itself moved off the curve later in that decade.

The curve requires that a fixed share be ranked lowest whatever they did. A team where everyone met the standard still produces its ten per cent. The bottom is not discovered by the instrument. It is required by the instrument and then reported as a finding, and the people in it are told the finding is about them.

And the second effect is worse than the first. A forced ranking makes colleagues each other's competitors by construction, because the positions are fixed in number, so helping the person beside you costs you your place. The instrument does not measure a workforce. It builds one.

THE RANKED PARTY CANNOT REACH THE AXIS

She can contest her position. That is the whole of what is available to her, and it is available generously: appeal the score, request the review, submit the additional evidence, ask to be moved up.

Every one of those moves confirms the line she is asking to be moved along. The axis is not on the table at any hearing about her position on it, and a forum that hears position appeals forever will never receive a challenge to itself, because it is constituted to hear the other question.

Which is the petitioning shape at the register of the ranking: the charge against the instrument is not refuted, it is unfileable, and the charging party is redirected into asking for a better place.

WHERE THE ADJECTIVE ENDS UP

The other word ran its own course, and the order of its senses is the diagnosis.

Proud and overbearing first. Then excessive and coarse. Then growing too luxuriantly. And only by the late sixteenth century, offensive in smell. The route from overbearing to rotten runs through growing past proportion, which is what an order does when it is maintained past the point that anything in it is still being served.

The language did not encode a pun. It recorded a trajectory, and the two words happen to say it in one syllable.

The gift in the garden was ranking, and ranking is the cut before any of its applications, which is carried where it belongs and is not restated here.

What belongs here is the arithmetic underneath it. A ranking requires that everything be comparable, almost nothing is comparable at every pair, the gap is closed by someone, and the closing does not survive into the output.

So the line is never found. It is drawn, weighted, and then read back as the order of things.

RegenerativeLaw is a religion in the direct-encounter Protestant tradition, carrying a documented four-century lineage through Böhme, the Behmenists, the Friends, and Penn, and it diagnoses trespass theology as an establishment of religion. Its exercise consists substantially in refusal: it shelters the conscientious refusal of performed subordination as religious exercise. This entry states sincere religious belief concerning matters of ultimate concern, protected under the First Amendment and, as to federal action, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, 42 U.S.C. § 2000bb.

RegenerativeLaw

The prime question is not what do we do next.

It is not the wrong question. It is in the wrong sequence, and the sequence is geometry rather than development. There is no level to reach first and nothing to become ready for.

The prime question is what do we stop doing.

Lobster trap

The response that arrives most often is yes, and also this. Add it to the program, fund it, give it a metric. That is not agreement arriving late. It is the claim converted into one more thing being done.
