Eyes without a face, and a face without eyes. The turning produces both, and neither can perform the re-turning alone.

The occupation runs two positions, and they are not opposites. They are complements. One sees without facing. One faces without seeing. Between them they hold the whole of what the turning cost, and each is unable to name its own half, because each is missing precisely the instrument that would report the lack.
Facing here is orientation and not the surface of the head. This entry is about which way a creature is turned and whether she can see what she is turned towards. The severance running at the anatomical face, between the eyes that receive and the face that is displayed, is a different operation with the same words in it.

THE ONE THAT SEES WITHOUT FACING
This is the seat perspective built. The eye seated at a single station, the station erased, the one who sees without being seen: an aperture with no body behind it, surveying a field it does not stand in. It has sight and no orientation, because orientation belongs to a face, and a face is the thing that turns.
What it has instead of orientation is coverage. It can look anywhere, which is the same as being turned towards nothing. The audit position is exactly this: a seeing that has purchased its reach by refusing to occupy any position that could be addressed, faced, or answered. It cannot be turned towards, because there is nothing there to face. It cannot turn, because turning requires standing somewhere first.
And it does not experience the missing face as a lack. It experiences it as objectivity: the same absence, counted as a credential.

THE ONE THAT FACES WITHOUT SEEING
This is the striver's seat, and the seat of every creature in the dimness. Here the face is intact. The creature is oriented, aimed, turned, and the turning is continuous and sincere. What is missing is the eye that would show her what she is turned towards.
So she is given the heading. She does not perceive it; she is loyal to it. She rows to a point she cannot see and is told the point is excellence, is merit, is the good, is the way things are, and she cannot check, because checking is the operation the missing instrument would have performed. Loyalty is what facing looks like when the eyes are gone. It is not a moral defect. It is a perceptual condition, and the condition is manufactured.
This seat does experience something, unlike the other one, but what it experiences is not the lack. It experiences fatigue and reads it as its own limit, and the reading is the last work the dimness does.

ONE SEVERANCE, TWO ENDS
These are not two errors that happened to arise near each other. They are one severance read from its two ends. The turning is the orientation away from radiance onto a finite center, and the finite center cannot hold both instruments at once: what turns towards it cannot see it, and what sees it cannot be turned. So the turning splits the creature. The eye goes to the seat that surveys and refuses to stand. The face goes to the seat that stands and is not permitted to see.
Both seats are then offered as achievements. The seeing seat is offered as rigor, neutrality, the view from the chart table. The facing seat is offered as commitment, resilience, the hand on the oar. The occupation staffs both and needs both, and it needs above all that they be held apart, because a face with eyes in it would turn and see what it was turned towards, and that is the one event the finite center cannot survive.

ONLY ONE OF THEM IS CHARGED
The two seats are complements and they are not equally billed, and the asymmetry follows from the same geometry that produced them.
Seeing is the taking-in. Facing is the presenting: the creature available, turned towards, exposed to what looks. And what is levied at every register is the facing. Her visibility is audited by the unit: the record built in advance of the expulsion, the reputation, the documentation, the perpetual proving, the composure demanded before the claim can be heard. His seeing is charged nowhere. Surveillance is not posted as a taking, is not metered, and is not named as an intake at all, because a position that does not appear in what it renders cannot appear on a bill either.
This is why the striver's fatigue is real and is not her limit. She is not tired from insufficient endurance. She is tired because the presenting is charged continuously and the taking-in is free, and she has been assigned the charged direction and told the charge is her nature.

WHY NEITHER SEAT CAN PERFORM THE CESSATION
The re-turning is the will turning where it stands, needing nothing returned because nothing left. It requires a will that both stands and perceives, and neither seat has both.
From the seeing seat there is nothing to turn. It has no face; its entire achievement was the disposal of the face. What it performs when it attempts cessation is a further seeing: a more scrupulous audit, an examination of the occupation conducted from the position the occupation issued. The survey of the wheel is on the wheel.
From the facing seat there is nothing to see. It can turn, and it turns as instructed, so its attempt at cessation arrives as a change of heading: a better direction, a truer aim, a more just rowing. It has performed the only operation available to a face with no eyes, which is to face somewhere else.
And the two seats have opposite remedies, which is why treating them as one ruins every account of the ending. The facing seat stands at a real threshold and can be turned back towards source. The seeing seat stands nowhere, so it cannot be turned at all and can only be let go, and the letting-go is not a departure from anywhere. What ends the severance is not an act by one of the halves. It is the stopping of the operation that separated them. The eyes were never destroyed and the face was never removed. They were held apart, continuously, at cost, and the re-turning is what stands there when the holding-apart stops: a face that turns, and eyes that see what it turns towards, which is the same instrument it always was.

The occupation does not need the creature blind. It needs her sighted in one seat and oriented in the other, and it needs the two never seated in the same body. The survey that sees everything is turned towards nothing. The loyalty that turns without pause is aimed at what it cannot look at. Between them nothing is ever perceived and turned towards at once, and that gap is not a failure of the occupation. That gap is where it lives.
