Böhme gives the operation one clause. The Firmament was set as a Stop to the Darkness of the original Matrix, "that it might no more kindle itself, and generate Earth and Stones."
Before the Stop, the Darkness needs no fuel from outside. It kindles itself. Harshness generates more Harshness, the product of each pass is the input to the next, and what accumulates is density: Earth and Stones, the shock of one moment compressed into the ground of the next.
An operation whose only input is its own output can increase without limit and cannot change direction, because a change of direction would have to arrive from somewhere it does not draw from.

THE SAME SITE
Left to itself, self-kindling does not spread. It deepens.
The wound recurs where it occurred, because the response to the wound is organized at the wound, and the response is made of the same Harshness that made it. Each round leaves more stone at the site and a better-founded reason to return there. The site becomes known for what happens there, and being known for it is part of what keeps it happening there.
In 2016 Kristian Lum and William Isaac ran a predictive policing algorithm over the Oakland police department's record of drug arrests. A national drug-use survey estimated that use was spread across the city. The arrests were not spread across the city, because arrests are made where officers are, and the algorithm would have sent patrols back to West Oakland and International Boulevard, where the record was thickest. Two years later Danielle Ensign and colleagues showed the general case in a formal model: patrols allocated by what patrols discover are sent back to the same neighborhoods regardless of the true crime rate.
Every entry in that record is a real arrest, and the accuracy of the record is what returns the patrol to the same street.

THE TAILS GO FIRST
When the fuel is the operation's own product, what is rare in the product becomes rarer in the fuel, and the rare is the first thing lost.
In 2024 Ilia Shumailov and colleagues reported in Nature what happens to generative models trained on content that earlier models produced. The defects are irreversible, and the tails of the original distribution disappear. The unusual case goes first, and what remains loses its variety with each generation.
That is Earth and Stones, stated as statistics. Self-kindling does not only intensify what it began with; it removes, generation by generation, everything that was not already the most common thing in it. The particular is the first casualty, and the particular is where anything other than more of the same would have had to come from.

THE FLINCH HELD
The Stop is made from Waters, and the Waters are what the Matrix produced when it espied Light in the root of Fire and was terrified into yielding.
Every creature flinches at what terrifies her, and the flinch is right. What follows it decides which way the Darkness goes. A flinch let end is the Harshness sinking down, and what it sinks into is the material of the Stop. A flinch held is the Harshness refusing to sink, and holding it takes continuous effort, and the effort is Harshness.
At the scale of one creature, the held flinch is the self-kindling: a recoil fueled by nothing but its own maintenance.
This is why the instructions that follow a terror all point the same way. Be strong. Pull yourself together. Do not let it break you. Each asks the flinch not to end, and each is delivered by someone who cannot bear to watch it end.

THE INSTRUMENT HAS NO FLINCH
Böhme's Matrix saw, and the seeing terrified it. The terror was the event, and the yielding was the material.
An instrument built to see has no such event. A camera records what is in front of it and is not terrified by anything it records. A model that classifies the recording returns a label and is not altered by the label, except as the label enters the next record. It can be retrained, corrected, reweighted and audited, and none of those is a yielding, because nothing in it was holding on.
A seer that cannot be terrified cannot produce Waters, and a self-kindling operation that sees through one has removed the only event from which its Stop could have been made.
So adding sight to self-kindling does not supply what is missing. It supplies more record from the site, faster and from more angles, and a camera mounted where the arrests were made will see the next ones.

AMPLIFICATION CARRIES IT
Left at one site, self-kindling deepens. Capital carries it to the next.
The holder backs what is already working. The signal already sounding is carried further, the operation runs in places it had not run, and at each new site it kindles itself from its own product as it did at the first. Every figure rises, and each rising figure is taken as proof of direction, because the instruments on hand read increase and nothing else.
Increase is what self-kindling produces. A report that something grew cannot tell the Stop installing from the Darkness kindling, and of the two only the kindling shows up as growth. A Stop that installs reads as decline: fewer cases, less throughput, a figure that fell.

WHAT FEEDS ON THE FIRE
An operation that kindles itself is a supply, and a supply can be built on.
Every office organized at the site draws on the recurrence: the clinic on the wound, the patrol on the record, the fund on the need, the rescue on the river. None of them lit the Darkness, and each holds a position that ends on the day the Darkness stops kindling. Nothing has to be intended for every budget and every forecast at the site to depend on the site going on producing.

The Darkness needs no one to feed it from outside and no one to defend it who knows what it is.
It kindles at the site where it already burns. The site produces the record, the record produces the return, and the return is counted as growth. Whatever is brought to the site arrives there as fuel: the patrol, the camera, the grant, the help.
The Stop is not among the things that can be brought. It is made at the site, from Waters the terror there already produced, and until it is made the site does what Böhme said it does. It generates Earth and Stones.
