Circulation

What moves without accumulating

🜃

Circulation is not the opposite of accumulation. The opposite of accumulation, on the same axis, is loss — depletion, the pile drawn down. Circulation is not on that axis at all. It is the other configuration: the seven qualities braided rather than locked, the channel open rather than dammed, the motion of a thing that is already whole rather than the swelling of a thing trying to become enough. Where accumulation is the conduit become reservoir, circulation is the conduit carrying. [See ACCUMULATION.]

🜃

What circulates is bread, gift, attention, care, the day. The day's bread is given and eaten and given again; nothing is held against the next day. The gift moves and comes back transformed; the season turns and returns; the breath goes out and is drawn in. This is return without loss — not the same thing kept, but the same motion continuing, the field maintained by what passes through it rather than by what is stored out of it. The manna geometry is circulation's law: gather the day, and what is gathered against the day rots. [See DAILY BREAD.]

The fountain wells; it does not store. What comes through is carried, not kept, and a thing carried cannot pile. The fountain is not poor for refusing to hoard — it is full precisely because it does not stop the flow. The joy body has no hoard, not because it lacks but because nothing in it is held against what comes next. Its fullness is the passing-through, not the holding-back. Stop the flow to build a reserve and the fountain becomes a cistern, and the cistern, however large, is the beginning of accumulation.

🜃

Circulation produces no countable increase, and to the counting logic this reads as stagnation. It transforms without adding; it maintains without piling; at the end of a cycle there is no more than at the beginning, only the same field, still alive. The +1 grammar cannot see this as health — it can see only that the number did not rise. But the number not rising is not the failure of circulation. It is circulation's nature. The living maintains; it does not accrue. [See ACCUMULATION LOGIC.]

The old structures that worked this way were not utopian gestures; they were circulation made institutional, and they have records. The clean-slate proclamation that periodically cancelled the debts and returned the dammed water to the channel. The gift circle and the giveaway, where standing came from what one released rather than what one held. The currency built to decay, so that it had to move rather than accumulate. Each is a technology for keeping the channel open against the pressure to dam it. The configuration that calls these primitive is the configuration that needs the dam. [See COMPOUND INTEREST. See THE GROWTH IMPERATIVE.]

🜃

Cessation returns the field to circulation. It is not redistribution — redistribution pours the held water into different vessels and leaves the damming intact. Cessation removes the dam. What was held is not shared out by a fairer hand; it is released back into the motion it was taken from. Release, not transfer. The channel carries again, and the carrying was never the thing that needed managing. It was the thing the damming prevented. [See CESSATION. See LIQUEFACTION.]

🜃

Circulation arrives nowhere and loses nothing. It is the motion of what does not need to become more because it is not lacking. The hoard asks how much is held; circulation does not ask, because nothing is held — and the not-holding is not emptiness. It is the open hand, which is not empty. It is full of what is passing through it. [See THE HOARDER]
