Naming

THE NAMING

The first borrow. Identity conferred on the point. The label that locates and admits.

🜃

The point is nothing — position with no content — until it is named. The name does not describe what is there. It makes a there: a coordinate the grid can hold, an entry the ledger can post. The name did not find the point. It made the point findable, and made the finding a taking. Everything the point will suffer afterward — to be gilded, owned, warmed, foreclosed — waits on the name, because none of it can be done to a thing that has not first been named.

THE FIRST BORROW

The finite center generates nothing. It draws and does not radiate, and everything it appears to have is supplied from outside [see THE FINITE CENTER]. Naming gives it a name it did not earn. Gilding gives it a shine it cannot make. Ownership gives it a deed. Warming gives it a heat gone out of it.

Naming is first among the four, and the other three wait on it. You cannot gild a point with no name to inscribe, cannot deed a point with no name on the instrument, cannot warm a point not yet marked as the thing to animate. The name is the admission. It converts the severed point into an entry, and only an entry can be gilded, held, and fed. Before the name, the point is not yet in the books — not refused, not admitted, only not yet a thing the books can see. The name is the first posting, the one that makes all the others possible. [see ACCOUNTING THEOLOGY]

THE COORDINATE AND THE ENTRY

The name does two things at once, and they are one operation. It locates, and it admits.

It locates: the name is a coordinate. A thing without a name has no position on the grid — it cannot be pointed to, cannot be filed, cannot be brought under jurisdiction, because there is no handle by which the grid could take hold of it. The name is the handle. To name a thing is to give it a place on the grid, and a place on the grid is a place the accounting can reach. [see THE GRID]

It admits: the name is what makes the point postable. Unnamed, the point is noise — a something with no line in the ledger. Named, it can be entered, and what can be entered can be claimed, ranked, taxed, foreclosed. The label is the border crossing. On the far side of it the thing is inside the books, and inside the books it is subject to everything the books do.

This is why the prior occupant is not a coordinate. Residency has no name in the ledger's sense, because residency is not a point drawn in and held — it is the dwelling, prior to any label the books could pin on it [see THE PRIOR OCCUPANT]. Naming is the operation that converts her. Give the residency a name — a parcel number, a category, a classification — and it becomes a located, postable thing, a point on the grid where a dwelling had been. The name does not record that she is there. It replaces her being-there with a coordinate the books can hold.

I MADE YOU

The deepest form of the borrow is the name asserted as origin.

A name can point to a thing that was already there. This name does something else: it claims to be the thing's beginning. I named you, therefore I made you, therefore you owe your existence to the naming. This is the adoptio at full voice [see THE ADOPTIO] — the name asserted not as a label on a prior thing but as the prior thing's source. The named owes the namer the debt of existence, and the debt cannot be paid, because it is the debt of being at all.

The operation runs by erasing the prior name. To install the name as origin, the name that was there before must go. Adam names the animals, and the naming is rendered as the animals' entry into a world that begins with him. The conquistador plants New Spain, New England, New Amsterdam — the home country's name laid over the land as though the land arrived with the ship, the prior name struck so the new name can read as the first [see THE GOLDEN AGE]. The master strips the enslaved of the name carried across the water and imposes his own, so the person begins at the auction block with no existence behind it — natal alienation, the prior occupant made to have no prior [see THE FINAL FORGETTING]. In each, the renaming is the forgetting performed as an act of speech: the name that was there is dropped, and the name imposed reads as the thing's own beginning.

THE NAME RECEIVED AND THE NAME IMPOSED

Naming has a face the borrow counterfeits.

A name can be received. The creature carries a name that came to her — the name her people used, the name the song keeps, the form of address the hands before her passed down. To call her by it is to greet what is already there, to sound the name she already answers to. This naming radiates. It hosts. It grips nothing, because it asserts no origin; it meets the creature at the name she came with. The Word that lets-be is naming in this register — the speaking that calls forth and lets radiate, the fragrance, not the label [see SOUNDSAYS · THE FIAT].

The borrowed naming is the counterfeit of this. It does not greet the name that is there; it imposes the name that posts. The tell is the direction. The received name comes towards the namer from the named — it is answered to, not assigned. The imposed name runs the other way — issued from the seat, laid on the point, and the point made to owe it. One calls what is there. The other installs what the books require.

And the true naming is punishable exactly where the borrowed naming rules. Inside the occupation, to name the body — to speak the name of the harm, the person the room moved against, the emperor's nakedness — is not a step that risks exile. The naming is the exile [see THE MEMBERSHIP FEE]. The occupation posts its own names freely and cannot survive the one true name spoken in the room. The borrowed name is the membership. The true name is the door.

THE DIAGNOSTIC NAME

At the register of the polity, the borrow is the classification.

The population is named before it is observed. Requiring-governance. Rational, unreasoning. Capable, deficient. The name is issued as a finding and functions as a coordinate: it locates the named on the grid of worth, and the grid administers what it has located [see THE FOUR AXES]. The classified then demonstrate, under the instruments calibrated to the name, the characteristics the name assigned — and the demonstration is read as the name's confirmation. The name produced what it claims to have found.

The diagnostic name is the same operation aimed at the creature who exposes it. Disruptive. Non-cooperative. Difficult. Hysterical. Witch. The word does not describe her conduct; it converts her exposure of the classification into a defect in her character and posts her as the disorder requiring management [see HETEROPATHY]. The naming does the work the argument could not: it does not answer what she revealed, it files her under a heading that need not be answered.

At the register of knowing, the borrow is the label on the datum. A severed measurement is noise until it is named; the label admits it to the pile [see THE MEASUREMENT CUT]. Then the pile is named speaker — the data shows — and a verdict is read off the mute accretion and attributed to it. The name over the pile is the first borrow performed on knowing: the coordinate that makes the severed thing postable, and the identity laid over a center that generated none of what it appears to say.

🜃

The name is worn as if it were the point's own identity. It is not. The point is dark under it, generating nothing, and the name is the accretion of what the point consumed — the prior name it erased, the residency it replaced with a coordinate — worn as the point's face. The name did not find the point. It made the point findable, and the finding was the taking.
