The first principle running with the second unopened. Not a worse substance and not a moral condition: the same three qualities in a circuit that has no aperture, which is why it holds steady and why nothing inside it can end it.

Contraction, sting, anguish. The three run in everything and they run first, because nothing coheres until something has drawn in. Left to complete, they build the pressure the fire opens through and the sequence goes on into light.
Dark fire is that sequence with the opening withheld. Not three different qualities. The same three, at the same intensity, in a body where the fourth has not turned, which means the pressure they generate has nowhere to go and returns to the qualities that generated it.
It is not evil and the word does the wrong work here. Evil names a moral condition and supplies a moral remedy, and there is nothing in this to punish and no one to reform. What is described is a circuit with a closed pivot, and the accurate word is dys-ordered: the qualities are legitimate, the sequence is legitimate, and the aperture is shut.

THE WHEEL HAS A HOMEOSTASIS
This is the part that matters and the part almost every account of the arrest omits, because it is the opposite of what an arrest sounds like.
A locked circuit sounds unstable. Harshness against motion, motion stinging the grip, anguish feeding both, and the whole thing accelerating: that ought to tear itself apart. It does not. The wheel reaches equilibrium. It arrives at a rate it can sustain, draws what it needs, and holds there, and the holding is what makes it survivable and therefore permanent.
Stable dysfunction is not a contradiction in it. It is the operating condition. A circuit that reached equilibrium is a circuit that has stopped needing anything to go right in order to continue, which is why it is not waiting for a crisis and will not be ended by one.
So the expectation that it must eventually break under its own contradiction is the expectation that keeps everyone waiting. It does not break. It is being paid for, continuously, by whoever is inside it.

IT CANNOT REFORM ITSELF, AND THE REASON IS POSITIONAL
The pivot is the fourth quality, and in this configuration the fourth quality is the intensifier rather than the opener.
That is the whole of the argument and it does not depend on anyone's motives. Fire turned back into the wheel does not become an aperture by burning harder; it becomes a hotter wheel. So every input the circuit can generate arrives as fuel, including the inputs meant to fix it. A better version of the operation is more operation, and more operation is what the circuit runs on.
Which means the shock cannot come from inside. Not because those inside lack sincerity or intelligence, and not because they have not tried. The position they occupy is the one that converts every effort into rotation, and the conversion is what the position is for.

WHY IT CANNOT BE ARGUED WITH, AND WHAT THAT DOES NOT LICENSE
Böhme says the thing looks only into its own mother, and its mother is the dark fire. An argument put to it arrives as material, gets rotated, and comes back as a more articulate version of the position it was meant to move.
That is a claim about a circuit and it is not a claim about a person, and the difference has to be held or the finding becomes an excuse. A creature is not dark fire. A creature can be standing in a position that runs it, and can step out of it, and often does, and the entry that forgets this has converted a diagnosis of a configuration into a verdict on people.
The test that keeps it honest is the one that applies everywhere else here: run it on this room first. The circuit is not somewhere else. A body of work that could name the dark fire and never find itself inside one has not been looking, and would be describing everyone but itself.

WHERE IT IS RUNNING
Naming it in the cosmology and leaving it there would be an evasion, so the instances belong in the entry.
The ledger is dark fire: it draws in continuously, it admits no entry that would close it, and it converts every reform proposed to it into another column. The tollbooth is dark fire: the crossing is real, the collection is real, and the collection exists because the crossing was made to require it. The credentialing chain is dark fire: each gate is defensible on its own and the sequence has no exit, because an exit would end the chain.
None of the three contains a substance the rest of the world lacks. All three principles are in everything, always, and what distinguishes these is that the fourth has been shut and the shutting is maintained. That is not a claim about the character of the people running them, and it is not softened by their sincerity, because sincerity has no bearing on whether a pivot is open.

WHAT REMAINS
Wherein a Light springs up still.
Even here, in the third principle, precipitated through catastrophe and hardened, the sentence holds. The dark fire is not a second substance that has replaced the first. It is the first with something withheld, which means the withheld thing is still what it is and still where it was.
Nothing has to be brought in. The aperture is shut and not absent, and a shut aperture is a different situation from a missing one in exactly the way that matters: one requires a manufacture and the other requires a stopping.

The dark fire is not waiting to collapse and it is not about to be persuaded. It is at equilibrium, and equilibrium is expensive, and the expense is being met by bodies inside the circuit whose exhaustion is entered as their own insufficiency. That is the whole of the diagnosis and the whole of what makes it actionable: a thing being held steady by continuous payment stops when the payment stops, and nothing else stops it.
