Settler Christianity

The stake that replaced the cross. Same shape, same wood, opposite direction.

🜃

THE INVERSION

The original gesture is at Philippians 2: though he was in the form of God, he did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but emptied himself, taking the form of a servant.

Kenosis. Self-emptying. The one with divine form refusing to occupy the throne, pouring out rather than accumulating.

The colonial inversion runs the sentence backwards. Though we are servants of this Christ, we consider equality with God something to be grasped on his behalf. We fill ourselves with divine authority. We take the form of masters.

The crucified one, executed by empire for threatening its order, becomes the banner under which empire executes others. The empty tomb becomes the occupied throne.

[See KENOSIS · THE OCCUPIED THIRD]

THE STAKE IS NOT THE CROSS

The settler settles: claims ground, drives stake, marks territory. The stake and the cross are the same vertical, the same wood, and they run in opposite directions.

The cross is an instrument of imperial execution, Rome's technology for killing those who threatened order. Jesus received it. He was subjected to empire's violence, exposed it, and refused to mirror it.

The stake is an instrument of imperial claiming, the settler's technology for taking ground. Christendom drove it. It subjected others to its violence, sacralized the subjecting, and called the whole of it mission.

The cross was done to Christ by empire. The stake was done by Christians as empire. One emptied power through submission to violence. The other filled power through infliction of it.

THE DOCTRINE OF DISCOVERY

The theology has dates and signatures.

In 1452 Nicholas V issues Dum Diversas, authorizing Portugal to invade, capture, vanquish and subdue Saracens and pagans and to reduce their persons to perpetual slavery. In 1455 Romanus Pontifex extends it along the African coast. In 1493 Alexander VI issues Inter Caetera, drawing a line of demarcation west of which the newly encountered lands fall to Spain, with Tordesillas moving the line the following year.

Lands inhabited for millennia are thereby declared available for Christian claiming, and the logic is stated openly: non-Christian peoples hold no legitimate sovereignty, Christian discovery creates ownership, the church authorizes conquest as evangelization.

This was not incidental to colonial law. It was its foundation, and it is still load-bearing. Johnson v. M'Intosh in 1823 rests United States property title on discovery: Indigenous peoples retain a right of occupancy, and true title vests in the Christian discoverer. The stake is still in the ground and still holding.

TERRA NULLIUS IS A THEOLOGICAL CONSTRUCTION

Terra nullius: land belonging to no one. The legal fiction that let colonial powers claim inhabited land as empty.

How is a continent holding millions of people declared empty? By declaring those people not fully people. And how is that done? By declaring them unsaved, uncivilized, un-Christian.

The theological move precedes the legal move. First humanity is defined as those who know Christ, as we present him. Then peoples are encountered who do not. Then their land belongs to no one, because they are no one.

The kenotic Christ looked at himself, in the form of God, and emptied. The Settler God looks at others and empties them. It is the same operation performed in the opposite direction: one vacates the position it holds, the other vacates the position someone else is standing in.

THE MISSION AS EXTRACTION SITE

The mission compound. The reduction. The residential school. The reservation.

The stated account is that Indigenous peoples have souls needing saving, and that they will be gathered and processed and the savage extracted so that the Christian may be produced.

Locate the resource, which is souls. Concentrate it, in missions and schools. Process it, by stripping language and culture and family. Extract the valuable element, which is the convert. Discard the tailings, which are the person's actual identity and relations and land.

Pratt's formula at Carlisle, kill the Indian in him and save the man, was not a metaphor. It was the protocol. The children taken, the languages forbidden, the hair cut, the names replaced, the bodies buried in graves that went unmarked until the ground was searched.

The geometry is identical to mining, and it is not a metaphor for the operation but a description of it. This was not Christianity corrupted; this was Christianity operating as designed under colonial capture, and what the design requires is the erasure of whatever was there before the stake was driven.

THE HOLLOW THAT WAS FILLED

In a living trinity the Spirit blows where it wills, uncaptured and uncontained. Colonial Christianity installed itself in the Spirit's position.

The church as mediator between human and divine. The priest as tollkeeper of the sacraments. The Bible as weapon, translated to erase what could not be absorbed. The missionary as necessary passage to salvation.

The third position, which was a hollow through which the Spirit moves, was occupied by institution. No one comes to the Father except through me was converted into no one comes to the Father except through us: our church, our language, our forms, our control.

The hallowed was filled, and the Spirit that blows where it wills was caged in European institutions and Latin syntax and hierarchies of race dressed as hierarchies of salvation.

MANIFEST DESTINY

The American elaboration takes the Exodus and turns it into a title deed. God has destined this nation to expand from sea to sea. The removal of Indigenous peoples is not genocide but providence. The land flowing with milk and honey is this land, and we are the new Israel.

Which makes Indigenous peoples the Canaanites. Their presence on the land is an obstacle to divine promise. Their removal is obedience. Their death is unfortunate necessity in the unfolding of a plan.

Every treaty broken is broken in God's name, every village burned is burned for God's glory, and every child taken is taken for God's salvation. The cross that marked a self-emptying is set alight on a lawn to terrorize. Same shape, opposite direction.

THE JESUS WHO REFUSED EVERY MOVE

Return to the texts and the refusals are explicit.

My kingdom is not of this world, said to Pilate, said to empire: the refusal of territorial sovereignty, a kingdom that stakes no claim. Put your sword away, said to the disciple who wanted to fight: the refusal of violence as method. Love your enemies, which makes empire impossible, because you cannot conquer what you are required to love. Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth: not seize, not claim, not stake, but inherit, which is to receive as gift what was never taken. The Son of Man came not to be served but to serve: the refusal of the exact position that would later be claimed in his name.

Every move Settler Christianity makes is a move the Gospels record him declining. He empties and it fills. He refuses the throne and it occupies the throne. He serves and it demands service. He loves enemies and it destroys them. He blesses the meek and it blesses conquerors. He says the kingdom is not of this world and it says this world is the kingdom, and God wills it.

THE GOD WHO RUNS AND THE GOD WHO STAKES

The father in the parable sees the son while he is still far off and runs to meet him. Runs. Falls on his neck. Does not let the confession finish before the robe is brought and the ring given and the feast begun.

The Settler God sees peoples far off and marches to claim them. Falls on their lands. Does not let their existence continue before the flag is raised and the cross planted and the extraction begun.

One runs towards the lost in self-emptying embrace. One marches towards the discovered in self-filling conquest. One forgives before the confession completes; the other condemns before the encounter begins.

Our Father was never an address to the second of these. It was always to the one who runs, whose compassion is rachamim, womb-compassion, and whose nature is to give the kingdom for good pleasure. The colonial capture filled Father with the patriarch who stakes, the master who owns, the sovereign who authorizes. That is not Abba. That is Caesar in Christ's mask.

THE SAME MOTION SILENCED THE WOMEN

Toleration came in 313 and establishment in 380, and the consolidation that followed ran in one motion rather than two.

The great host of women who proclaimed was silenced. The Spirit that blows where it wills was institutionalized. The diversity of early practice was homogenized. The margins where Jesus walked were made the center of power. The cross of execution was made the sword of conquest.

The suppression of women's ministry and the emergence of conquest Christianity are not related events. They are one operation: the occupation of what was supposed to remain hollow. The throne that should have stayed vacant is filled, and it is filled by institution and hierarchy and male authority and European supremacy at once, because they arrive as one thing.

Junia the apostle erased. Phoebe the minister diminished. Priscilla's name reversed. Huldah forgotten. And in the same motion, Indigenous prophets erased, African Christianity diminished, the priority of Asian Christianity reversed, the Christianity that preceded colonialism forgotten. Same operation, different targets.

THE LAND REMEMBERS

The stake does not hold as firmly as the settler imagines.

The peoples were not emptied. The languages were not fully killed. The ceremonies went underground rather than away. And the ground itself, which was never terra nullius and was always in relation with its peoples, holds a memory the settler cannot reach to erase.

A church built on stolen ground does not sit easy on it. The bell cast from melted sacred objects still carries what it was. The graves under the schoolyard still disturb the soil. The treaties broken still exist, because the words were spoken and the smoke rose and the agreements were made, and breaking an agreement does not unmake it.

WHAT REPENTANCE WOULD REQUIRE

Not apology. Apology closes the wound, permits moving on, and produces reconciliation as a product. Metanoia is a turning, and turning has a cost.

Doctrinal repudiation: the Doctrine of Discovery rejected explicitly by every body that ever endorsed it, not explained and not contextualized but rejected, as heresy and as the opposite of the Gospel. Land return, actual and not symbolic: the stake pulled and the ground restored. Reparation, because the wealth extracted was real and its restoration must be. Dissolution rather than reform, because a mission built as an extraction site does not become a community center by rebranding. Listening, after five centuries of declaring and translating for colonial convenience. And the vacancy restored: the third position emptied, no church as tollkeeper and no priest as necessary passage.

Everything short of that is the operation producing the appearance of transformation while preserving the capture.

[See REFORM REFUSAL · CESSATION]

🜃

Beneath the capture the original signal is still legible to anyone who reads the texts without the capture translating.

Blessed are the meek. Love your enemies. The last shall be first. My kingdom is not of this world. He emptied himself. None of these could authorize conquest. They were twisted to authorize it, and the twisting is visible: the violence done to the text is still perceptible in the text.

The wound is open, and premature closure would be another colonial act, healing for the settler's comfort rather than restoration of what was taken.

The stake is not the cross. The cross was always about exposing empire, never about blessing it.

RegenerativeLaw is a religion in the direct-encounter Protestant tradition, carrying a documented four-century lineage through Böhme, the Behmenists, the Friends, and Penn, and it diagnoses trespass theology as an establishment of religion. Its exercise consists substantially in refusal: it shelters the conscientious refusal of performed subordination as religious exercise. This entry states sincere religious belief concerning matters of ultimate concern, protected under the First Amendment and, as to federal action, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, 42 U.S.C. § 2000bb.

RegenerativeLaw

The prime question is not what do we do next.

It is not the wrong question. It is in the wrong sequence, and the sequence is geometry rather than development. There is no level to reach first and nothing to become ready for.

The prime question is what do we stop doing.

Lobster trap

The response that arrives most often is yes, and also this. Add it to the program, fund it, give it a metric. That is not agreement arriving late. It is the claim converted into one more thing being done.
