The Figuring

The originary forming the imaging surface faced before the turn. Where the creature was given, and where the infection lodged.

THE WOUND

The creature cannot go behind her own forming.

She is the figured one. There is no creature anterior to the Figuring from which she could begin again, no un-figured self held in reserve behind the one that was given. The forming is not an event in her past she might revisit and correct. The forming is the floor she stands on. To reach behind it she would have to stand somewhere the Figuring did not give her, and there is no such place.

This is the wound the entry sits at: the infection is at the origin. It did not arrive after the creature was formed and settle on a clean creature like weather. It was lodged in the forming itself. The creature carries genuine Virtue and holding architecture from her root, inseparably, and she cannot extract the one from the other by any operation of her own — because the operation that would extract is the generating function, and the generating function's entry is the trespass. The instrument that would clean the origin is the thing the origin needs cleaning of.

THE FORMING

The Figuring is the Fiat figuring the Similitudes. The creative speech goes forth and brings Images into Being; what is figured is a Similitude, an Image of the Eternal Nature, and the creature is one such figured Similitude. To say the creature was figured is to say she was spoken into the form she has, given as image, given as dwelling, given as the body the soul inhabits.

Residency is installed here. There is no proprietor anterior to the dwelling because the dwelling is the Figuring's gift and the occupant was figured as its occupant, not as its owner. The creature does not hold title to her body; she is the body's prior occupant, figured into it. The ownership-frame has nothing to seize on at this depth, because nothing was conveyed to a holder. Something was figured, and the figuring is the giving, and the given one is the occupant. The Figuring is the cosmological fact the prior occupant rests on. Whoever displaces her displaces what the Figuring gave.

THE DOUBLENESS AT THE ROOT

The doubleness is double at the root, in the imaging itself, in the Beschaulichkeit by which the Heart goes forth. To bring one Image into Being is to withhold every other Image in the same act. The disclosure is the concealment — one going-forth, the Image figured and the unfigured held back, contemporaneous, neither prior. This is a consequence of manifestation, of the precipitate, of the Heart's going-forth. It is not a consequence of the grip.

This is the first non-conflation the entry must keep. The doubleness the Figuring gives is innocent. It is what forming is. If the doubleness were the grip there would be nothing left to host, and the creature would be nothing but the thing held. The Figuring does not give the grip. The Figuring gives the doubleness, which the creature can host or switch — and the giving of something hostable is not the same as the lodging of what makes switching default.

WHERE THE INFECTION LODGED

The creative speech was compromised in the Figuring of the Similitudes by Lucifer's fall. The compromise is seated at the forming, not downstream of it. The Fiat that figures is the infected Fiat, and every act of the infected Fiat precipitates both genuine Virtue and holding architecture, inseparably. More Fiat, more Similitude; more Fiat, more imprisonment. The two are not figured in sequence, the good first and the holding bolted on. They precipitate in one act, because the speech that figures them is one speech, and the speech is the compromised one.

So the Figuring is not innocent-then-corrupted. There is no clean Figuring the creature was given before a later fall darkened it. The creature figured under the infected Fiat carries the holding architecture from the same act that gave her the Virtue. This is why the wound cannot be reached by reaching: the infection is not a deposit laid on top of a clean structure that could be scraped back to cleanness. It is in the speech that figured the structure. To get behind it is to get behind the figuring, and there is no behind.

NO OUTSIDE

Before the turn, the creature's imaging surface faced the Figuring, and the Figuring had no outside. There was no position from which the two faces of the doubleness could appear as two. There was no crossing at which a configurational move was required, because there was no here-position from which a there could be measured against it. The doubleness was double, structurally, all along — but it was not yet registrable as a crossing, because the site at which a crossing is read had not opened.

The Figuring is therefore not the Switch, not the cut, not the turn. It is what the surface faced. The Switch is the reading-from-one-face installed as the whole; the cut makes the doubleness a measurement-doubleness, readable as two substances; the turn opens the site at which either reading becomes possible. None of these is the Figuring. The Figuring is prior to all of them. It is the forming they presuppose and operate on. To name the Switch or the cut as the wound is to stop one floor too high. The floor beneath them is the Figuring, and the Figuring had no outside to stand the operations on until the turn supplied one.

THE TURN DID NOT MOVE THE FIGURING

The turn re-faced the imaging surface. The here-position opened; the doubleness became registrable as a crossing; the infection of the Fiat made switching the crossing's default. What the turn changed was the facing. It did not change the Figuring. The Figuring did not move when the surface turned away from it. It remained what the surface had faced, and it remains what the surface faces again when the surface re-faces — the going-forth of the Heart into Image, the doubleness at its root, the speech that figured it compromised.

Which is the last hardness of the entry.

The Figuring is not lost. It is behind the turned surface, intact, the Similitude it figured not erased by the infection that compromised the speech — the infection lodged the holding architecture and did not abolish the Image. But the Figuring is not reached by an operation. The surface does not figure itself back to the origin; figuring is not the creature's to perform on her own forming. What faces the Figuring again faces it; it does not produce it. The Similitude the infection could not erase is exactly the thing no reaching reaches, because reaching is the operation, and the operation is what turned away.
