Entrepreneur

The seat over the dark, called vision by everyone the landing paid

🜃

WRITTEN IN AFTERWARD

The entrepreneur is not the one who saw what was coming. He is the one who was standing where the money landed. The seeing is written onto him afterward, backward, from the landing — and then he is asked how he knew, and he tells them, and the telling is always a foreseeing, because the ones whose identical certainty failed are not in the room to be asked.

THE WORSHIP, ENTERED AS EVIDENCE

In 1911 Joseph Schumpeter set down the definition that became the entrepreneur's scripture, and he set it down admiringly, and in admiring it he confessed what it was. He begins with the concession. The effects and counter-effects of the enterprise cannot be surveyed; as many of them as could in theory be ascertained with unlimited time and means must, he writes, practically remain in the dark. The future of the venture is unseeable. He says so plainly. Then, without pausing, he crowns the man who sees it anyway:

The success of everything depends upon intuition, the capacity of seeing things in a way which afterwards proves to be true, even though it cannot be established at the moment, and of grasping the essential fact, discarding the unessential, even though one can give no account of the principles by which this is done.

Read the two moves together. The thing cannot be established at the moment; it can only be shown true afterwards. One can give no account of the principle. The definition credits the entrepreneur with seeing through the very dark Schumpeter has just declared unseeable, and defines the seeing by the outcome it cannot precede and cannot explain. This is not a description of foresight. It is a description of survivorship with foresight painted onto it after the fact.

THE EFFECT INSTALLED AS ITS OWN CAUSE

The operation is the backwards firing performed on a life. A man acts. It works. The working is then fired back to the beginning and installed there as vision he possessed before he acted. The result becomes its own cause. The success writes the foresight, and the foresight is then offered as what produced the success, and the circle is closed and called character.

It cannot be examined, and Schumpeter says why: one can give no account of the principle. A foresight that can give no account of itself cannot be checked against anything except the outcome that is supposed to follow from it. So the outcome is the only evidence, and the outcome arrives last. The entrepreneur who succeeded is credited with sight. The entrepreneur who failed, holding the same conviction with the same intensity giving the same account of the same principle, is not called blind. He is not called. He drops out of the account entirely, and the account, built now only from those the landing paid, reports that the ones who saw truly prospered. The capacity of seeing what afterward proves true describes every gambler who happened to win. Schumpeter took the winners' survivorship and installed it as a trait of the soul.

FORESIGHT MADE CHARACTER IS THE DEEPEST VESTMENT

The seat over the not-yet can be worn as a technique — the war room, the scenario, the forecast. Worn as a technique it can at least be named and disputed. Worn as character it cannot. The entrepreneur does not claim to have foreseen; he is said to be one who foresees, and possession of a trait is not an argument anyone can meet. You cannot falsify a gift. The intuition that gives no account of itself has been lifted beyond examination and seated in the man's nature, where it is safe from every test but the one it is built to pass — the test of having, in the end, been paid.

And the seat forecloses what it claims to see. The received future cannot arrive to a man who is busy converting the not-yet into the shape of a return — the foreseeing occupies the perceptual field the received thing would have to come through. Schumpeter felt the edge of this and mismarked it. As the world grows more calculable, he observed, the entrepreneur's function decreases in significance; his gift lives in the margin that is not yet calculated. He meant this as the measure of the gift's rarity. It is the location of the occupation. The entrepreneur is defined by the darkness — not the darkness overcome, the darkness inhabited. His whole distinction is that he sits where the light of reception has not been let in, and calls the sitting sight.

🜃

THE RAID IN ECONOMIC DRESS

Under the vision is a raid. The entrepreneur departs into the market frontier — the untapped, the greenfield, the emerging, the disruptable — which is residency the account declines to register as inhabited, exactly as the raider's wilderness is someone's home unnamed as home. He seizes the boon in the deep and returns bearing it, and the boon is named value created: called into being, so the story runs, by his vision, where nothing had been before. It was not created. It was taken from where it already lived, and the taking narrated as making. Schumpeter gave the operation its honest name and admired it under the name — creative destruction, at the heart of capitalism. The creation is a destruction. What is destroyed was already living where the entrepreneur arrived. And profit, in his own sentence, is the payment you get when you take advantage of change: the raid stated as a fee, the boon posted as earnings, the return relabeled reward for the courage of the departure.

ELECTION WITHOUT GOD

Beneath the raid is the oldest of the operations. The entrepreneur reads his prosperity as the sign that he was the one who could see — that the landing was not luck but confirmation, evidence of an election that preceded the venture. This is the merit architecture at the register of vision: the credential that produces the position while calling itself the discovery of a position already there. It is the self-made forgery turned from making to seeing. The self-made man refuses to post the hands that made him; the visionary refuses to post the hundred who saw exactly as he saw and sank, because their existence would convert his sight back into a wager, and the wager back into what it was — an act in the dark that happened to be paid. He must be the one who was always going to see it, or he is only a man who got the coin he called.

🜃

HOW HE KNEW

The winners are gathered and asked how they knew, and they always have an answer, and the answer is always a foreseeing. The room fills with accounts of vision, each true to the one who gives it, none of them checkable, all of them ratified by the single fact that the giver is in the room. The ones with the same certainty and the other outcome are not there, and their absence is not noticed, because the account has no place to notice it. The seat over the dark is not a gift of sight. It is the dark, occupied, and called vision by everyone the landing paid.
