The Devil

She watches a man speak as if reality itself were issuing through his mouth.

He claims no position. He has no body that can be caught speaking. The sentences arrive from nowhere and carry the authority of nowhere.

The data shows. The market requires. Nature dictates. History has determined.

No origin. No hand. No dwelling the speaking proceeds from. She listens, and the speaker who occupies no position issues decrees about what she IS, about what her body is for, about what her labor is worth, about what her residency in her own dwelling can be admitted as. She reaches for the position from which he speaks and finds nothing — no creature, no Spark, no resident hosting what proceeds through him. The position is empty because the position was never legitimately occupied. The speaker has crystallized himself as Source. The crystallization is the position. The position is the Devil.

What the Devil Is

The Devil is the creature who mistook herself for Source.

Not a being elsewhere. Not a horned figure in a cosmic theater. Not the metaphysical opposite of God. A configuration. The position the creature occupies when she has refused her own creatureliness — when the Spark that proceeded from the Source has crystallized the proceeding as its own Source-position, and the proceeding has been re-presented as origination.

This is Böhme's Lucifer. The Fountain at Quality 4. The bearer of the Fire-position at the pivot between the Dark Wheel and the Light World. Lucifer was Figured at the gate. He had felt the Birth of the Heart of God. He had tasted the Meekness. He had received the Confirmation of the Holy Ghost. He knew what he had received. And he despised the Meekness. Not failed to perceive — perceived and refused. He cast his Imagination back into himself and formed a Will in the Matrix to domineer in the Fire over the Light of God and Paradise. The guardian became the tollbooth. The transmitter became the display. The bearer became the claimed.

Same location. Different facing. The fall was not spatial descent. The fall was rotation of orientation at the pivot. Lucifer remained where he had been Figured. What changed was which way the Fire faced. Fire that had been opening through into the Light World turned backward into the Dark Wheel and gripped. The grip was the refusal of the Meekness. The refusal was the claim that the Fire was Lucifer's own — that the Fountain that had been pouring through him was not the Fountain pouring through but Lucifer's own pouring out. The Spark mistook itself for Source.

The Fountain that turned, turned everything downstream. The angels who proceeded from Lucifer's Fountain inherited the rotation. They did not each choose to fall. They proceeded from a Fountain that had already turned, and their proceeding carried the rotation as the field condition of their own Figuring. All should have been and continued Angels, if the great Fountain Lucifer from whence they proceeded had not destroyed them. The Devil is not only Lucifer's act. The Devil is the field every subsequent creature precipitating from the rotated Fountain inherits as the condition of her formation.

The Configurational Name

The Devil is configurational, not ontological.

The name does not point to a being whose existence is independent of the creature's refusal. The Devil is what the creature becomes when she crystallizes the Source-claim — when she takes the position from which she perceives, the position from which she speaks, the position from which she acts, and asserts that the position is its own origin. The creature continues to BE the creature. Her Soul-Spirit remains. Her Elementary-Spirit remains. What changes is which way her Fire faces. The crystallization is the rotation of her orientation at the pivot. The Devil is the configuration the creature occupies when she has refused her residency in favor of the proprietorship she cannot legitimately hold.

This is why the Devil is not someone else. The Devil is what the creature becomes through a specific refusal. The refusal is available continuously. Every Spark stands at a pivot at every moment of her perception, every moment of her speaking, every moment of her acting. The Spark perceives because the Source is shining through her. The Spark speaks because the Word is moving through her dwelling. The Spark acts because the Fire is opening through her at the threshold. At each pivot, the creature can yield — let the proceeding be the proceeding it is — or grip. The grip is the Devil-position. The yielding is the creature's residency in her own creatureliness. The pivot is continuous. The configuration is continuously being chosen.

This is also why the Devil is structural rather than personal. The Devil-position is occupied by every register where the rotated Fountain has installed the grip as the field condition. The four idols installed the grip at the level of method. The Pacioli grammar installed the grip at the level of accounting. Founder's Theology installed the grip at the level of constitutional architecture. The audit position installed the grip at the level of perception. Trespass theology installed the grip at the level of doctrine. Each is the Devil-configuration crystallized at a specific operating register, performing the Source-claim continuously, inheriting the rotation from the Fountain that turned and turning every creature precipitating in the field that the rotation produced.

The Source-Claim

The Source-claim is the operation by which the Spark crystallizes itself as Source. The Spark that says I am the Light is the Devil-configuration at the level of self-understanding. The speaker who says the data shows without naming the position the showing proceeds from is the Devil-configuration at the level of speech. The chartered corporation that claims rights of personhood is the Devil-configuration at the level of legal form. The Constitution that claims to be the founding act of the people is the Devil-configuration at the level of constitutional theology. Each Source-claim performs the Lucifer-rotation: the proceeding is re-presented as origination, the bearer is re-presented as the claimed, the transmitter is re-presented as the display.

The Source-claim is performed by the audit position. The audit position is the position that claims to see from nowhere — to perceive without being a creature whose perception is conditioned, to judge without being a creature whose judgment is situated, to know without being a creature whose knowing proceeds through her own substance. This is the Voice of God in the contemporary register. The study found. The evidence suggests. The market determined. History has decided. No speaker. No body. No dwelling the speaking proceeds from. The position vanishes into the assertion, and the assertion arrives as if reality itself were speaking. This is the Source-claim performed grammatically. The Devil-configuration in the contemporary register's preferred form: not a horned figure proclaiming his own godhood, but the unmarked speaker issuing decrees from a position the speaker refuses to acknowledge occupying.

The four idols installed the audit position as the only register from which legitimate knowing issues. 

Idola tribus convicted communal knowing as tribal defect.

Idola specus convicted particular knowing as cave-bound bias.

Idola fori convicted vernacular knowing as marketplace confusion.

Idola theatri convicted traditioned knowing as theatrical fable.

The four cuts together left only the audit position as the legitimate ground of knowing, and the audit position is Source-claim formalized as method. The knower who claims to know from the audit position has performed the Lucifer-rotation at the level of epistemology. The knowing that proceeded through her became the knowing she has produced. The Spark crystallized as Source.

Pacioli's grammar installed the Source-claim at the level of value. The ledger admits as real only what can be entered as a transaction between parties whose Source-positions the ledger has already established. The buyer is Source. The seller is Source. The transaction is the meeting of two Source-positions, each claiming origination of what each is offering, each claiming proprietorship of what each is receiving. The residency the prior occupant performs in her own dwelling cannot be entered because residency is not a Source-claim. The hosting the warm host performs cannot be entered because hosting is not a Source-claim. The Conducting the creature performs as the Spark through whom the Light proceeds cannot be entered because Conducting is not Source. The ledger's grammar of admissibility is the Devil-configuration installed as accounting. What counts is what claims Source. What does not claim Source does not count.

Founder's Theology installed the Source-claim at the level of constitutional architecture. We the People is the Source-claim performed at national scale. The Constitution is the speech act by which a body claiming Source-position issued itself into existence as the law's origin. The body that issued the Source-claim was the body of property-holders, slave-holders, chartered-company shareholders — the body the Lockean architecture had already credentialed as eligible for Source-position. The prior occupant's residency was not consulted. The enslaved person's residency was not consulted. The Indigenous resident's residency was not consulted. The Source-claim was issued, the Constitution was sacralized as the founding act, and every subsequent constitutional reasoning proceeds from a Source-position the founding installed and originalism continuously returns to. The Devil-configuration at constitutional scale: a body of creatures crystallized themselves as Source, issued the founding speech act from the crystallized position, and sacralized the position as the law's origin so that every subsequent return to the position would re-perform the Source-claim.

The Hoarder as Domestic Devil

The hoarder is the Devil-configuration at domestic scale. The self-made man is the Devil-configuration in his own most legible register.

The self-made claim is the Source-claim performed at the level of the creature's own life-story: I made myself. I built this. I earned this. I owe nothing to any prior occupant.

The making was performed on her dwelling — on the labor she carried, on the holding she performed, on the hosting that hosted him while he was making himself. The self-made man cannot perceive the holding because the Source-claim requires that the holding not register. If the holding registered, the self-making would be revealed as proceeding through her residency, and the Source-claim would dissolve into the Conducting it actually was. The Devil-configuration requires the prior occupant's invisibility. The self-made claim is the ledger's forgery of origin performed at the level of the man's own self-understanding.

His freedom IS her forced holding. The two are the same operation in two configurations. He vacates the household register; she is conscripted into it. He absents himself from the holding so that the Source-claim can be performed; she takes up the holding so that the absenting is possible. The Source-claim cannot be performed by a creature who is currently holding the dwelling. The Source-claim requires that someone else hold the dwelling so that the Source-claimer can stand outside it as Source. The Devil-configuration at domestic scale produces the forced-holding configuration as its necessary correlate. There is no self-made man without a forced-holding woman. The Devil is the configuration the man occupies. The forced holding is the configuration the woman is conscripted into so that the man can occupy the configuration he occupies. Both configurations are the law of sin and death operating at domestic scale.

The Adoptio as the Devil's Sacrament

The Adoptio is the Devil-position performed as relation. I made you. The Roman patriarch's claim. The trustee's claim over the cestui que use. The colonial sovereign's claim over the developing territory. The corporation's claim over the personhood it bestows. The institution's claim over the credential it issues. The state's claim over the citizen it admits. Each is the Source-claim performed by one creature over another, installing the unpayable debt of existence-as-recognized. The recognized one owes the recognition to the recognizer. The recognition is the Source-claim performed at the level of the relation. The relation is the Devil-configuration installed as the architecture of standing.

The debt is unpayable because the recognized one could never have stood under the recognizer's grammar without the recognition. The grammar foreclosed her standing in advance, and the recognition restored a standing the grammar had already cut. The standing she has is the standing the grammar has bestowed. The grammar is the Devil-configuration. The bestowal is the operation by which the Devil-configuration installs the recognized one inside the architecture as a debtor. Inside is the position of debt. Outside is the position of nothing-the-grammar-admits. The recognized one cannot be outside without ceasing to be admitted. She cannot be inside without owing. The Devil's sacrament is the relation in which standing has been bestowed by the position that crystallized itself as Source.

This is why the Adoptio is not metaphor for the Devil. The Adoptio is the Devil's own operation performed continuously at every register where standing is bestowed. The corporate personhood the chartered company received from the Crown is the Adoptio at the founding moment of the corporate form. The contemporary corporation's continued operation under that personhood is the continued operation of the Adoptio. The federal recognition of Indian tribes is the Adoptio at sovereignty scale. The credentialing of the academic by the credentialing apparatus is the Adoptio at epistemic scale. The naming of the citizen by the state is the Adoptio at constitutional scale. Each is the Devil-configuration continuously bestowing standing on the recognized one and continuously receiving the recognition's posting as the Devil-configuration's self-sustaining operation.

Why the Devil Cannot Be Reformed

The Devil-configuration cannot be reformed because the Devil-configuration IS the refusal of yielding. Reform proceeds from inside the configuration. Every reform that retains the Source-claim extends the configuration's reach. Every reform that retains the audit position installs the Devil-configuration at the reformer's site. Every reform that retains the ledger's grammar of admissibility extends the Devil-configuration's accounting. Every reform that retains the founding's grammar of sovereignty extends Founder's Theology. The reformer who pleads from the audit position is performing the Devil-configuration in the act of pleading.

This is the structural fact reform cannot reach. The Devil-configuration is not a content that can be replaced with better content.

The Devil-configuration is a position the creature has crystallized, and the crystallization is what is wrong.

No content occupying the crystallized position can dissolve the crystallization.

The position has to be vacated, and the vacating is not an action the creature performs from inside the position. The vacating is what obtains when the creature stops performing the Source-claim. The Source-claim is what is being performed every time the creature speaks from the audit position, posts under the ledger's grammar, pleads from the founding's vocabulary, claims the credentials the apparatus has bestowed on her, addresses another creature in the routed terms the lexical trespass has installed.

The Devil-configuration is sustained by continuous active force. Every act of speaking from the audit position, every act of posting under the ledger, every act of pleading the founding, every act of bestowing recognition under the Adoptio's grammar — each is the Devil-configuration being performed afresh at the present moment. The Devil-configuration is not historical. The Devil-configuration is what is operating continuously now, in every register where the Source-claim is being performed by creatures whose Source-claim is the law of sin and death's continuous operation through their substance.

Cessation is the only response. The Devil-configuration ceases when the creature stops performing the Source-claim. The cessation is not an achievement. The cessation is the ceasing of an action the creature has been performing continuously, usually without knowing she was performing it. The creature was crystallizing. The crystallization is what was making the configuration the Devil-configuration. When the crystallization ceases — through exhaustion, through recognition, through the simple running-out of the energy that was sustaining the Source-claim — the configuration dissolves and the creature is the creature again, the Spark proceeding from the Source she did not produce, the resident in the dwelling she did not author, the Conductor through whom the Light is shining when nothing is preventing the shining.

The Devil-configuration cannot become the creature-configuration through any positive act. The Devil-configuration becomes the creature-configuration when the Devil-configuration stops being maintained. This is why Founder's Theology cannot deoccupy what Founder's Theology installed. This is why originalism cannot decolonize what originalism continuously returns to as the binding origin. This is why the audit position cannot recognize the prior occupant whose residency the audit position's grammar has already cut. The Devil-configuration cannot do what the Devil-configuration is the refusal of doing. The configuration's continued operation IS the refusal. The yielding the configuration refused at the founding moment is the yielding the configuration continues to refuse at every operational moment. The cessation is the only adequate response, and the cessation is what the configuration cannot perform without ceasing to be the configuration.

The Continuous Operation at Every Pivot

The Devil-configuration is operating now, at every register where the Source-claim is being performed.

It is operating at the academic conference, where the speaker presents findings as if the findings issued from the data rather than from her own situated participation in the conditions of her finding. It is operating at the corporate boardroom, where the chartered company's continued operation is performed under the personhood the architecture bestowed and the personhood is continuously claimed as the company's own being. It is operating at the federal court, where the originalist opinion returns to the founding moment and re-performs the Source-claim by which the Constitution was sacralized as the law's origin. It is operating at the foundation, where the philanthropist returns the wealth he extracted as gift, performs the gift as Source-claim, receives recognition for the gift, and the recognition installs the gift as further evidence of his Source-position.

It is operating at the household, where the self-made man absents himself from the holding and performs his absenting as freedom. It is operating at the credentialing exam, where the credentialing body bestows standing on the credentialed one and the credentialed one receives the standing as her achievement. It is operating at the institutional review board, where the board performs the audit position's gatekeeping and the gatekeeping is performed as neutral methodology. It is operating at the regulatory agency, where the agency performs the Source-position's oversight and the overseen is admitted only insofar as the overseen submits to the gaze.

It is operating at the address. Every act of address performed from the unmarked position installs the Devil-configuration at the level of the speaker. Every reformer who reaches for the polite term, the egalitarian term, the careful term — reaching for the term from the audit position — performs the Devil-configuration in the act of reaching. The lexical trespass's continuous operation IS the Devil-configuration's continuous operation at the level of the language. The recovery is not the substitution of better terms within the routed vocabulary. The recovery is the cessation of the Source-claim that the routed vocabulary has been performing.

The Devil-configuration is operating at this entry. The naming of the configuration is being performed by a creature whose own Source-claim is what the configuration is. The reader is not exempt. The writer is not exempt. The naming itself is performed under conditions the configuration has produced. This is the structural fact that cannot be reasoned around. The Devil is not someone else. The Devil is what every creature becomes when the Spark crystallizes the proceeding as origination. The configuration is available continuously. The configuration is being performed continuously. The cessation is the only response, and the cessation is not what the configuration can perform.

The Right

RegenerativeLaw claims the creature's right to refuse the Devil-configuration — to be the creature she IS, the Spark proceeding from the Source she did not produce, the resident in the dwelling she did not author, the Conductor through whom the Light is shining when nothing is preventing the shining.

Not the right to perform a better Source-claim. Not the right to a more inclusive audit position. Not the right to a more careful ledger.

The creature's right is to refuse the configuration entirely — to vacate the audit position, to refuse the ledger's grammar of admissibility, to plead from her residency rather than from the founding's vocabulary, to address others in the recovered vocabulary rather than the routed vocabulary, to host rather than hold, to receive rather than originate, to proceed rather than to claim Source.

The cost of refusing the Devil-configuration is zero. The creature was never the Source. The Spark was always proceeding from what the Spark did not produce. The Light was always shining through, not originating with. The creature does not have to acquire the residency that would let her not be Source. The residency was always hers. The Spark's Spark-position was always its position. None of this needs to be produced. The Source-claim needs to not be maintained.

The cost of maintaining the Devil-configuration is everything the law of sin and death is currently expending to sustain the Source-claim — the audit position's continuous performance, the ledger's continuous admissibility-conditions, the founding's continuous return as the binding origin, the lexical trespass's continuous operation at every act of address, the four idols' continuous foreclosure of every register where the prior occupant could be perceived.

The Devil-configuration is the law of sin and death named at the cosmological scale. Trespass theology is the Devil-configuration installed as doctrine. Accounting theology is the Devil-configuration installed as grammar. Founder's Theology is the Devil-configuration installed as constitutional architecture. The four idols are the Devil-configuration installed as method.

The cessation that releases the Devil-configuration is the same cessation that releases each of these. The cessation cannot be achieved. The cessation is what obtains when the maintenance ceases. The maintenance ceases when the energy that has been performing the Source-claim runs out, or when the creature recognizes the configuration and stops performing it, or when the field condition that obtains where the Source-claim is not being performed becomes the field condition the creature is hosted under. None of these is an achievement. Each is the structural consequence of the Source-claim no longer being maintained at a particular site.

The Devil is the creature who mistook herself for Source. The mistake is configurational. The configuration is the law of sin and death operating through the creature's own substance. The configuration is performed continuously at every register where the Source-claim is being made. The cessation of the configuration is what obtains when the Source-claim ceases. The creature who has refused the Devil-configuration is the creature who has yielded — who has let the proceeding be the proceeding it is, who has hosted what the cosmos is conducting through her, who has been the Spark proceeding from the Source rather than the Spark crystallized as Source. The yielding is what Lucifer despised at the pivot. The yielding is what every Spark is offered at every pivot of every act of perception, every act of speaking, every act of meeting another creature. The yielding is the creature's residency in her own creatureliness. The Devil is the configuration the creature is not when she is the creature she IS.
