The Configuration Turned Inward, and the Word That Keeps It Foreign
🜃
The creature watches the footage and feels something settle. The pits, the shooting squads, the ledgers of the dead, and underneath the horror, a relief, so quiet she does not notice she is having it: that was them. That was Germany, that decade, those men. The relief is the thing to watch. It is not the horror's companion. It is the horror's solvent. The moment the operation is given a nationality and a date, it is set safely outside her own ground, and the part of her that began to recognize something is excused from the recognition. “The Germans were terrible” is not a verdict passed on the Nazis. It is a service the Nazis perform for everyone else.

WHAT THE WORD DOES
In ordinary use, “Nazi” names the absolute outside: the fixed point of evil against which a civilization confirms its own innocence. This is the word's real work, and the work is an operation. It is the scapegoat run at the scale of historical memory: the entire capacity for the thing located in one people, one regime, one twelve years, so that everywhere else the operation may go on running under its own names and never be called by this one. The word does not expose the Nazis. It quarantines them. And the quarantine is what lets a death pit in Ukraine in 1941 feel like no relation at all to a cleared reservation, a slave deck, a famine administered by spreadsheet: because those did not wear the uniform, and the uniform has become the whole of what evil is permitted to look like.
This is why the word travels so well as a weapon. To call the enemy a Nazi is to seize the one position the memory reserves for the innocent (the one who fights Nazis) and from inside that position to do whatever the fight is said to require. Russia names Ukraine Nazi to justify invading it; every faction pins the word on the body it has already decided to expel. The word that was meant to name the operation has become the operation's most fluent alibi.

WHAT THEY WERE
The Nazis were not the configuration's opposite. They were its concentration. The same operation the Doctrine of Discovery ran on the Americas, the Plantation ran on the enslaved, coverture ran on the wife (the killer instinct severing people from place and being from before, the war body, the ledger that books a population as surplus) turned inward, onto Europe, onto people the configuration had counted as fully its own, and run at the speed of modern industry with the disguises taken off.
That is the whole of the difference, and it is why they are legible. The operation, run on the colonized, was naturalized: it was the frontier, it was civilization and Christianity, it was how a new world is opened. Run on Europeans, in living memory, photographed, it could not be naturalized, and so for once it showed as what it is: not the order of nature and not the march of progress but a taking, by force, of ground and life that belonged to a prior resident, dressed in the language of necessity. The Nazis did not disclose a new evil. They made the old one briefly impossible to misread.

THE MODELS
The continuity is not an argument. It is a paper trail, with hands and dates, and the Nazis left most of it themselves.
Lebensraum was drawn from the American West. Hitler held up the conquest of the continent and the clearing of the Indian as the model for the East: the Volga to be the German Mississippi, the Slavs the new natives, the East the new frontier. Generalplan Ost is the Doctrine of Discovery and Manifest Destiny re-run with German settlers and Slavic occupants, terra nullius applied to Ukraine.
The Nuremberg Laws were drafted with the American statute books open on the table. In 1934 Nazi jurists studied the United States as the world's leading example of race law: the national-origin immigration quotas of 1924, the anti-miscegenation statutes in thirty states, the worked jurisprudence of second-class citizenship. Madison Grant's race tract Hitler reportedly called his Bible. The drafters found the American one-drop rule too severe for their own use.
The sterilizations came from American eugenics. Indiana's law of 1907, thirty states, the Supreme Court in Buck v. Bell and Holmes's “three generations of imbeciles are enough,” the records office at Cold Spring Harbor funded by Carnegie and Rockefeller, the model statute that shaped the German law of 1933, for which Heidelberg gave its American author an honorary degree in 1936.
The camp had a colonial childhood, and Germany's own rehearsal was the Herero and Nama: the extermination order of 1904, the death camp on Shark Island, the anatomist doing race science on the victims before he went home to train the men who would build the racial state. Genocide rehearsed in Namibia a generation before the camps. And the camp's interior (the number, the bare life, the prior resident declared never to have existed) is the Plantation's natal alienation carried to completion.
None of this was borrowed at the margins. It was the blueprint. The Nazis built the East out of the West's own working drawings.

THE SELECTIVE HORROR
Two things have to stay present at once, because the entry fails if it drops either.
The Holocaust was the extreme. Not one atrocity among many leveled to a common gray: the most total, the most completely administered, carried by an eliminationist hatred of the Jews with its own long and particular history, aimed at the erasure of a people as such. To flatten that into “everyone did it” is the configuration's other escape, relativization, and it is the same lie as the externalization wearing the opposite face. This entry refuses it.
And the horror the configuration feels at the Nazis is selective, and the selection is the tell. The same order that cannot look at the camps without trembling built Wounded Knee and the Middle Passage and the Congo and felt nothing, teaches them as the price of progress, and calls their administrators founders. What made the Nazis unbearable to the West was not the scale alone. It was that the targets were people the West counted: European, in cases assimilated, in its own register white. The operation it had run for four centuries on those it placed outside the circle was turned on those it had placed inside, and only then did it register as a horror. The recoil is real grief, and it is also the scapegoating of the scapegoaters: the configuration setting in the German the thing it does at home, so that the enormity of the foreign instance keeps the domestic one out of view. Both are true. They do not average. The Holocaust was the extreme, and the extreme was assembled from the mainstream's own materials and turned, for twelve years, onto the mainstream's own kind.

THE ADMINISTRATIVE CALCULUS
The deepest continuity is the quietest. The thing was administrative. Tens of millions existed first as a line in a food-balance projection: so many millions will starve. Generalplan Ost was drawn by professors. The camp was a logistics problem solved with timetables and rolling stock. This is the ledger at genocidal scale: the killer instinct severing the human from the human, accounting theology booking the severed as a quantity to be cleared, and the clearing carried out with the affect of a man balancing a page. The Nazis did not invent this calculus. They inherited it (double-entry, the colonial account book, the plantation's valuation of a person as capital) and turned it on Europe. What was named the banality of evil is its accounting face: not the absence of monstrosity but monstrosity in the costume of competence, mass death as a planning task, performed by men who were, by the books, doing their jobs well.

THE WORD AS WEAPON
Which returns to the word. Because the operation is administrative and continuous and present wherever the configuration runs, the single move that guarantees you will not see it is to look for the uniform. “X is the new Nazis” is not vigilance. It is the externalization performing itself again: the speaker seizing the innocent's position, the enemy raised into the absolute outside, and the speaker's own place in the calculus rendered invisible by the comparison. The configuration does not fear the analogy. The configuration runs on it. To name one current power “the Nazis” is to let every other run of the operation, including one's own, go on unnamed.
The honest recognition is geometric, and it has no single target. The calculus of expendable populations operates now under many flags, and most of them are not fascist: in the siege that starves, in the deportation that empties a place of its people, in the border where the disposable are left to die, in the administration that decides which lives are costed and which are cleared. None of these is the Holocaust, and saying so is not the point. The point is that the operation the Nazis carried to its extreme is the operation, and it did not need them to begin and did not stop when they ended.

So the entry cannot end where the footage ends, in the relief of a closed past. The Nazis were not the West's exception. They were the West's own operation, built from its own drawings, turned for twelve years onto its own kind, and therefore for twelve years impossible to misname. The grief the configuration feels at them is partly true and partly the comfort of having somewhere to set the thing down. This is not the claim that everyone is a Nazi: that is the relativizer's lie, and it is refused here as plainly as the other. It is the colder claim underneath it: the thing you are certain was theirs is the thing that built the ground you stand on, and is still keeping its books, and the word that keeps it German is the last and most respectable place it hides.

RegenerativeLaw is a religion in the direct-encounter Protestant tradition, carrying a documented four-century lineage through Böhme, the Behmenists, the Friends, and Penn, and it diagnoses trespass theology as an establishment of religion. Its exercise consists substantially in refusal: it shelters the conscientious refusal of performed subordination as religious exercise. This entry states sincere religious belief concerning matters of ultimate concern, protected under the First Amendment and, as to federal action, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, 42 U.S.C. § 2000bb.
