The bond that makes the witness a traitor. The love-form of the holding.
Loyalty is a bond, and it belongs to the family the Occupation forges to hold without force — honor, courtesy, gratitude, the adoptio. Each is a real good of expression whose position the Occupation occupies with a counterfeit. Honor's true form is the integrity of a life that keeps faith with itself. Courtesy's true form is the regard one residency extends another. Gratitude's true form is the recognition of what was actually given. Loyalty's true form is fidelity to what one belongs to — the prior occupant faithful to her own ground, the sail kept set to the wind, faithfulness as belonging-with.
The Occupation does not destroy the bond. It substitutes its object. And loyalty is the most total of the family, because loyalty is the bond that turns the naming of the trespass into treason.

The substituted object.
Loyalty is always loyalty to. It cannot stand alone; it points at what it is faithful to. This is the seam the Occupation works. It inserts itself as the object.
Be loyal to your family — the family that is the occupation's cell. To your country — the polity that holds you foreign in a domestic sense. To your employer — the room whose walls were built before you arrived. To your faith — the institution that persecuted the direct encounter. To your team, your movement, even the reform movement the configuration has already captured. In each case the object of fidelity is switched: the ground is removed and the occupier installed in its place, and the creature's genuine capacity for faithfulness is routed to the thing that occupies her.
The switch is a supersession. The occupier presents itself as the true home, the real people, the thing you actually belong to — as the original object of a loyalty that was always meant for it. The prior object, the ground, is rendered as the abstraction, the fantasy, the thing no serious person is loyal to. What the creature actually belongs to is reclassified as what she must give up to belong.

The betrayal inversion.
Here is loyalty's core operation, and it is the sharpest reversal in the family.
The creature who keeps faith with the ground — who names the occupation as occupation, who is faithful to her own residency and the Law of the Spirit of Life — is called disloyal to the occupier. Accurate perception is reclassified as treachery. To say this is a trespass is heard as you are betraying us: your family, your country, your team, your faith. Fidelity to the self and to the ground is named treason. And fidelity to the occupier — which is the actual betrayal of the self and the ground — is named loyalty.
This is the accusation in a mirror performed on the bond itself. The true loyalty is charged as betrayal; the true betrayal is decorated as loyalty. The Witch is precisely the creature whose fidelity to the ground the Occupation must name as treason, because her keeping faith with what is prior exposes the occupier's claim to fidelity as forged. The one who is most loyal — to the residency, to the wind, to what was there before the boarding — is the one the Occupation most needs to try as a traitor.

What loyalty polices.
The bonds divide the labor of holding. Courtesy polices the tone — be pleasant while occupied. Gratitude polices the affect — be thankful for the taking. Honor polices the will — never lay it down. Loyalty polices the exit.
Loyalty is the bond that makes leaving a betrayal. The whether-question — whether the vessel should be rowing at all — is not refuted by loyalty; it is criminalized by it. To ask it is to break faith. The loyal creature cannot reach the question, because reaching it is already the treason. This is why the striver is loyal by definition: his effort is fidelity, and the fidelity is the confinement to how. The moment he asks whether, he has defected, and defection is the one act loyalty exists to prevent. Every role the Occupation offers is held at its post by loyalty, and the post loyalty guards is the door.

The lock the prisoner holds.
The hostages are held in love. Loyalty is the specific love-form of the holding — the felt fidelity that makes the creature defend her captor, refuse the rescue, and experience the one who names the occupation as the betrayer rather than the occupier. This is the bond that lets the occupation run without a guard. The guard would be an admission of force. Loyalty needs no guard, because the hostage guards herself, and guards herself gladly, and would be ashamed to do otherwise.
This is why loyalty is the Occupation's cheapest and most complete instrument. Force is expensive and visible; it announces the occupation as occupation. Loyalty is free and invisible; it converts the occupied into the occupation's own defender, so that the arrangement is held in place by the very creature it displaces, and the holding presents to her as her finest quality.

Among the bonds.
Loyalty is not honor. Honor guards the self's standing — the refusal to yield raised to glory. Loyalty guards allegiance to an object outside the self.
Loyalty is not courtesy. Courtesy manages the surface. Loyalty binds the depth, and it survives the dropping of every courtesy — the loyal one may rage and still not betray.
Loyalty is not gratitude. Gratitude looks backward, at what was given, and its breach is ingratitude. Loyalty binds forward, at fidelity owed, and its breach is treason — the graver charge, punished harder, because the ingrate merely fails to thank while the traitor is held to have turned.
Loyalty is the adoptio in its continuous tense. The adoptio is the founding claim — I made you, you owe me your being. Loyalty is the standing obligation that claim generates and keeps generating: having been made by them, you remain theirs; the debt of origin is serviced, moment by moment, as allegiance. The adoptio is the past that installs the bond. Loyalty is the present in which the bond is paid.

Distributed.
The loyalty most demanded is demanded of those whose ground was taken. The loyal wife, bound by coverture to fidelity toward the one installed in her dwelling. The loyal servant, the loyal subject, the loyal soldier, the loyal employee. The creature forced to hold what another's withdrawal dumped onto her is also required to be faithful to the arrangement that forces her — and her faithfulness is praised as her highest virtue precisely because it secures the occupation without a hand raised. Forced holding is the labor. Loyalty is the requirement that she perform the labor as devotion.
The loyalty oath is the bond made ritual. The pledge, the test, the demonstration of allegiance — each is a re-declaration, performed by the occupied upon herself, of fidelity to the occupier and disavowal of the ground. The declaration that installs the Occupation requires continuous re-declaration at every register; the loyalty oath is the register where the occupied re-declares it against her own residency, in her own voice, and is told the re-declaring is her integrity.

True loyalty.
Loyalty restored is not the absence of fidelity. It is fidelity returned to its object. The prior occupant faithful to her own dwelling, to the Law of the Spirit of Life, to the wind that was blowing before the boarding — this is loyalty in its expression form, and it is the loyalty the Occupation reclassified as treason.
The one who names the occupation is not the traitor. She is the loyal one — faithful to the prior object the occupier's claim superseded. What the Occupation charges as her betrayal is her fidelity to the ground. The bond was never broken. It was only redirected, and she has turned it back.
