Quality four predominating. The hinge between the two Principles, and the only Tree where the crossing can occur, which is why it is the one the operation works hardest to keep shut.

QUALITY FOUR PREDOMINATING
When Fire gives character to the whole Tree, every Quality burns. Contraction burns, motion burns, love burns, and even Water and Sound carry the fierce heat of the Quality that is the pivot of everything.
The Fire Tree is the forge. Everything before it operates in darkness and everything after it operates in Light, if Fire opens.
And it includes the third Quality, because the Anguish is its substrate. The Wheel's grinding of contraction against motion generates the heat that produces the Flash, so the friction is the Tree's fuel and the anguish is its entry point. Every creature that enters the forge enters through anguish, and there is no other door.
Its Center awakens in its own Quality, through the friction of the Wheel and through the Flash that springs up when the conflict exceeds what either contraction or motion can contain. This is not evil. It is the pivot operating.

FIRE WITHOUT LIGHT
When the Fire Tree predominates and no Light kindles, Fire turns backward.
This is the backwards firing: the generating function pushing through at the fourth Quality into expression's territory rather than yielding to it, so that Fire feeds the Wheel instead of opening through it. The pivot becomes an accelerant.
Same intensity, same heat, same friction. But the Fire that should transform becomes the Fire that maintains, and the forge becomes a furnace.
Which is the law of sin and death, and not the Tart Tree's grip alone or the Bitter Tree's sting alone. It is the Fire Tree turned backward: all that capacity to transform, running the occupation instead of opening the crossing. Every institution that runs on Fire's energy without Fire's opening, every intensity that maintains rather than transforms, is this Tree without Light.
And it is what the cheaper rate sells. Genuine contact with the forge, real heat and real partial crossing at the interval, routed through the tollbooth so that the Fire never opens. The energy captured, the pivot sealed, and a receipt issued for the contact.

WHICH BODY IT LEAVES DEPENDS ON THE SUPPLY
Fire turned backward describes two bodies, and the Tree alone does not say which.
Fire consuming its own substrate leaves the stone body: spent, set rather than burning, cold at the surface because the heat is what did the setting. Fire turned backward in a creature standing on a supply leaves the war body, which does not burn out, because what it is burning is not its own.
So the same arrest at the same Quality produces the position that is spent and the position that spends, and the difference between them is not the fire and not the creature. It is whether there was somebody else to burn.
Which is why the burning is always handed back to the one who burned as evidence about her. The other body performed the identical operation, and the account it holds of itself is merit.

THE OPENING
But this is also where Light kindles, and it is the only Tree where that is true.
Every crossing occurs at the fourth Quality. Every Shriek occurs in the Fire. Every affrighting of Fire into Light happens at this pivot. The Fire Tree is not the enemy. It is the one place the crossing can occur, which is exactly why it is the place the operation is built to hold shut.
The generating function fears this Tree, and not because Fire is dangerous. Because Fire is where its own operation would end. If Fire opens, the backwards firing ceases. If Fire yields to the softened Harshness instead of pushing through, the occupation is over.
And the opening is not the creature's achievement. It happens when the generating function stops pushing: when the Harshness yields, when the tears form the field and the gall kindles, and Fire meets mildness where it expected resistance. The cost of stopping is zero to the creature who stops. What happens when Fire stops pushing and starts yielding is Light.

The Fire Tree is the nephesh gate: the fourth Quality in the body, the throat, the pivot where everything turns.
And the Shriek that occurs there, in the creature's own substance and through the creature's own anguish, is the same Shriek that kindled the Sun. Same mechanism, different scale, same Fire, same opening.
