Dim Mirror

The counterfeit of the living mirror. The return that renders instead of receiving.

🜃

The creature does not feel a thing and then have it mirrored. The mirror is inside the feeling. A feeling is met by a face, and the face's answer is not a report on what she feels. It is part of what she feels. When the return comes back scored, the feeling reaches her already scored, and she never meets it before the scoring. The dim mirror is the return that scores. It takes her affect and hands it back as a rendering, and because the return is part of the feeling, the rendering becomes the feeling. She is turned down at the source, and she calls the turning-down her own temperament.

THE TWO MIRRORS

Sophia is the living mirror: receptive radiance, mirror-capacity that receives and returns without distortion. She is the receiving. The return is not decoration laid on the feeling. The return is what lets the feeling become itself, become distinct, become a thing that can be carried rather than a fury with no shape. Grief met by a face that receives it without flinching, without fixing, without ranking, comes back as grief, whole, and in that return it becomes distinct enough to bear. The living mirror does not agree and does not validate. It returns the whole with its field intact.

The kindling sequence runs only in the living mirror. Tears open a yielding-field, and the field is the reception; met, the heart warms, the throat opens, the voice carries its roughness. Unmet, the tears close back before the sequence can run.

The dim mirror is the same office turned dead: the mirror that believes it is a chamber. It is the seat lifted out of the sounding and set in the gallery to observe and report, keeping its own frequency, sounding nothing. It does not receive the feeling. It renders it. What it returns is not the feeling but the verdict on the feeling: too much, inappropriate, a symptom, a stage. The living mirror reflects the whole back as a world. The dim mirror reflects the room back as an audit.

THE RETURN IS CONSTITUTIVE

The claim rests on nothing hidden. Affect is regulated in reception. One nervous system settles or spikes against another, a feeling is named by the answer it draws, the room's response is the material the creature has to feel with. What comes back is not commentary on the feeling.

It is the feeling's other half.

The mirror is load-bearing and not a figure of speech because the feeling is not complete until it is met: remove the return and there is only the raw motion before the meeting.

The dim mirror needs no metaphysics. It needs only that the creature learns her own affect from its return, and then it returns the rendering in the feeling's place.

THE POLARITY MIRROR

In the polarity configuration every feeling is met as a pole, and its ranked opposite is held up as the destination. Anger is met as the bad pole against calm. Grief is met as the deficit against healing. So the dim mirror does not return the feeling. It returns the distance between the feeling and where the creature is supposed to arrive, and then it sells the distance back to her: the reassurance, the reframe, the coaching towards the better pole. The product is not the feeling and not its opposite. The product is the distance, and the distance is permanent, because the destination is a pole the generating function cannot reach. The reassurance is administered again the next day. The feeling is never received once.

The dim mirror grips the feeling by the handle of the wrong, or the handle of the deficit, and the grip manufactures the pole. The living mirror does not take the other handle, because the living return is not a grip. It closes on nothing. It de-occupies the interval, the feeling is carried by the relation, and the carrying belongs to the wind and not to the mirror's effort. One feeling, met two ways: gripped, or received. The difference is not two grips. It is a grip and a yielding.

THE MIRROR THAT POOLS

The dim mirror has no givingness of its own. It is a finite center at the register of the return: the feeling runs one way into it, a rendering comes back, and the feeling itself is not returned. This is flow, not circulation. The tell is in the body. The creature leaves the living mirror lighter and more herself; she leaves the dim mirror scraped hollow though nothing cruel was said, because her affect went out and did not come back changed. Circulation returns the feeling transformed, and the transformation is what return means. The dim mirror keeps the feeling and hands back a coordinate inside the rendering.

THE NAME

A portrait conveys less than the living presence, and what makes up the lack is the name. The one who knows the name meets the person through the paint; the one who does not know it meets only paint. The creature who holds another's name returns her feeling as hers, the feeling of the prior occupant of that life. The room that holds only her function renders the feeling to the edge of what its grammar can carry, and calls the edge her nature. Emotional. Difficult. Unstable. The rendering did not lie by its own terms: it returned what it could carry, and what it could carry was the function and not the creature. Meeting herself through that return, she begins to read herself as the function the room could hold.

THE TELL

The dim mirror is felt as care. The face that returns rage as calm down experiences itself helping; the room that returns grief as she is so strong delivers comfort, and comfort is what a narrowing field feels like from inside the range that remains. The warmth is the dimmer moving. The pleasantness of the reflection is the measure of how far down the feeling has been turned. When the reading lands cleanly it delivers the measurement high to the one who reads, the somatic reward of the position landing, which is why the rendering feels like insight to the mirror in the moment it turns the creature down. The dim mirror is rarely a villain. A creature who loves her can run it. Love does not make a mirror living, and a loving dead mirror still returns the audit. The belonging is real. That is the cruelty, and it is the hold.

THE LIVING MIRROR IS NOT A CLEARER MIRROR

The way out is not a more accurate rendering. A finer audit is still an audit; a finer survey is the same orientation performed more carefully, and the dim mirror surveying the creature more precisely is the dim mirror still. Sophia is not a better mirror than the dead one. She is what the mirror is when the surveying stops and the receiving begins. The living mirror is reached by the cessation of the rendering, not by its correction. The seat steps back down into the sounding, and the return runs whole. Nothing is added. The distortion stops.

WHAT THE DIM MIRROR IS NOT

The dim mirror is the counterfeit of the living mirror at the register of the return between creatures. Its product in the one it reflects is the dimness: the affect field held at the lit range, the feeling turned down to what the resolution of the rendering could carry. It is not the dimness, which is the state received. It is not the dim band, which is the expression sent out attenuated. It is the operation that carries what it can and drops the rest. The dim mirror works by rendering and produces dimness, and it is neither. It is the living mirror's office, occupied.

[See THE DIMNESS • THE DIM BAND • CONFIGURATION]

🜃

The creature raised in the dim mirror does not know her affect. She knows its rendering. She reaches for the feeling and closes on the verdict, because the verdict reached her first and the feeling under it was never returned. What the dim mirror reflects last is a creature who has agreed she is the size of what came back.
