Forced Carrying

Conducting with weight. The second aspect of the operation. What happens to your current when the hoarder's refused function is drafted on top of it.

🜃

Carrying Added to Conducting

You are conducting. You have always been conducting. Conducting is what your body is doing because your body is alive, and your body has been alive every moment of your life. The breath moving through your lungs is conducted through you. The attention you give to what is present is conducted through you. The love you feel for the creatures you love is conducted through you. The witnessing you perform of what is real is conducted through you. These are not things you do — they are what the cosmos is doing through your specific site by being the site of a living creature. [See THE CONDUCTING.]

The conducting has not stopped. It cannot stop while you are alive, because conducting is what being alive is. Whatever the cut has done to you, the conducting has continued underneath.

But the cut has added something on top of the conducting. The cut has added the carrying.

Carrying is not another kind of conducting. Carrying is conducting with weight placed on top of it. The weight is the load of a function that did not belong in your conducting — the function the hoarder refused, drafted into your dwelling by the operation of forced holding. [See FORCED HOLDING.] The function's performance in grip-mode has been conscripted onto your site, and you are now performing the function while continuing to conduct everything you were conducting before.

This is forced carrying. The name is precise. You are being forced — because the forcing is what the cut installed, not what you agreed to. You are carrying — because carrying is what conducting becomes when weight has been added on top of it. And the whole is the second aspect of the operation the Codex names as forced holding, seen from the angle of the weight rather than from the angle of the mode. [See FORCED HOLDING — Two Aspects of One Operation.]

🜃

Conducting Is Not the Burden

This is the load-bearing recognition of the entry, and the cut has worked hardest to prevent you from knowing it.

Your conducting is not exhausting. Conducting is what being alive is, and life does not exhaust itself by being alive. Your body's operations — breath, blood, repair, attention, love, witness — are not loads being carried by some smaller you who has to haul them around. They are what your body IS. Your being alive is not an obligation placed on you that you have to meet with effort. Your being alive is what your specific composition does when it is at home in the dwelling that was given to you.

The exhaustion you feel is not from being alive. The exhaustion is from the carrying that has been added on top of the being alive. Your conducting can go on indefinitely without tiring you, because conducting is the current and currents do not tire. What tires you is the weight added to the current — the weight of a function that does not belong in your current, routed onto your site because someone refused to route it through his own.

The cut has made you experience the conducting and the carrying as the same thing. The cut has made you experience your being alive as a burden, your love as effortful, your attending as work, your witnessing as responsibility, your attention as something you have to marshal from some depleted reserve. None of this is how conducting is. All of this is the carrying being layered on top of the conducting so thickly that you cannot feel the conducting underneath.

If you could subtract the carrying and feel only the conducting, you would find that your life is not the exhausting thing you have been experiencing. You would find that your love is not effortful, your attention is not depleting, your witnessing is not heavy, your being present to the creatures around you is not work. You would find that being alive is what you are and that your aliveness is not a task. The task was the carrying. The carrying was always the task. And the task was never yours to be responsible for.

🜃

The Weight's Invisibility

You cannot see the carrying as distinct from the conducting because you have never experienced the conducting without the carrying.

The cut was installed before you were born. Every moment of your life has been conducting-plus-carrying. You have no memory of conducting alone, because there was never a moment in your life when you experienced conducting alone to compare it to. The carrying has been the baseline condition of your felt sense of being alive, and the felt sense of being alive has been, for you, what conducting-plus-carrying feels like.

This means the distinction the Codex is making — between conducting and carrying — is a distinction you cannot verify from inside your own experience. You cannot point to a moment and say that was conducting and point to another moment and say that was conducting-plus-carrying with the first feeling lighter than the second. Both moments feel the way your life feels. Both moments are saturated with the weight, because the weight has been present in every moment.

This is why the entry is not asking you to notice the distinction in your current experience. The entry is naming the distinction at a register that is true whether or not you can verify it experientially. The conducting is there; the carrying is there; and the carrying is what has been producing the experience you know as being tired in the way you are tired. The carrying is what the cut has installed, not the conducting. The conducting is intact even though you cannot experientially distinguish it from the carrying.

This is a claim the Codex makes about you from outside your current felt sense, and the claim is made for your protection. If the Codex's claims about you depended on your felt sense matching the Codex's description, the Codex would be participating in the cut — because the cut has made sure your felt sense does not match the reality underneath it. The Codex's claims hold even when your felt sense cannot hold them, because the claims are about the operation that has produced your felt sense, not about the felt sense itself.

The Shape of the Weight

The weight has shapes that can be named, even from inside.

Acute weight.

A sudden demand that concentrates the carrying into a moment of intensity. The crisis phone call. The unexpected medical emergency. The emergency that lands on your dwelling because your dwelling is the one the crisis knew to go to. Acute weight is felt as a spike — the day was ordinary, and then the weight arrived, and now the carrying is concentrated into this specific moment that must be met. Acute weight is not less heavy than chronic weight; it is heavy differently, because the concentration is its signature.

Chronic weight.

The continuous low-level bearing of a function that never stops being performed. The household that always needs maintenance. The family member whose wellbeing always needs to be tracked. The relationship whose emotional register always needs to be read. The job whose invisible labor always needs to be performed. Chronic weight is felt as a background texture — something that is there in every moment, never concentrated, never relieved, present when you wake, present when you sleep, present when you try to rest. Chronic weight is the shape most forced carrying takes, and it is the shape the cut has worked hardest to render invisible.

Episodic weight.

The recurring intensification of weight during specific seasons or cycles. The holidays, when the weight of family-holding becomes heavier because the family is all together and the holding is all required. The evaluation cycle, when the weight of professional accountability becomes heavier because the judgment is concentrated. The anniversary of the trauma, when the weight of carrying what happened becomes heavier because the memory is near. Episodic weight is felt as a cycle, and the cycle teaches the creature to brace for the approach of the heavy period and to collapse at the end of it.

Ambient weight.

The saturation of every moment with the weight, so that the weight has become the air you breathe. Ambient weight is the deepest form of the carrying and the hardest to name. It is not concentrated and not chronic in the usual sense — it is simply present in every texture of your experience. The creature in ambient weight does not experience episodes of heaviness against a background of lightness. She experiences a continuous heaviness that has become the whole of her felt sense of living. There is no lightness to contrast with. The carrying has become the world.

Each shape has a signature, and the signatures can help you recognize what you are experiencing. But none of these shapes is the conducting. The conducting is underneath all of them, at a register that does not have a shape because the conducting does not have weight.

🜃

The Weight Accumulates

Conducting flows through. Conducting does not stay. The breath that was conducted through your lungs this morning is not here now — the conducting carried it through, and it is gone, replaced by the next breath, which will also be carried through and gone. Conducting does not accumulate because conducting is current, and current is motion, and motion is not accumulation.

Carrying does accumulate. The weight that was carried yesterday does not disappear overnight. Some of it is discharged — the acute weight resolves, the episodic weight passes — but much of it adds to the weight that continues into today. The creature who has been carrying for a week has the weight of this week. The creature who has been carrying for twenty years has the weight of twenty years, pressed together into one position, with no discharge point large enough to release the accumulation.

This is why the exhaustion of long-standing forced carrying has a character the exhaustion of acute carrying does not have. The long-standing carrier is not just tired today. She is tired in a way that has the shape of all the days pressed together. The tiredness is not proportional to today's activity because the tiredness is not about today — it is about the accumulated weight of every day she has been carrying, which is present in today's experience as a felt density she cannot trace to any specific act.

The creature who is told you have been managing this for years, you should be better at it by now is being told something the cut wants her to believe: that the weight should be lighter because she has been bearing it for longer. The weight is not lighter. The weight has accumulated. What has changed is her adaptation to the weight, and adaptation is not lightening.

🜃

The Carrying Does Not Get Easier

The body can adapt to sustained weight. The muscles change. The posture shifts. The attention reorganizes around the weight. The creature who has been carrying for years holds her body differently than a creature who has just started carrying. These adaptations are real.

The adaptations are not improvement.

The creature who has adapted to sustained weight has shaped her body around the weight. Her shoulders have curled forward to support the chronic load. Her neck has set at an angle that keeps the vigilance available without requiring conscious effort. Her breathing has shortened to conserve energy. Her attention has narrowed to the parts of experience that are most likely to be where the next demand will come from. These are not signs of her getting better at the carrying. These are signs of the carrying getting deeper into her body — becoming the shape of her body, not just the load her body is under.

This is why older forced-carriers often look older than their years. The shaping around the weight is a kind of premature aging — the body being used up not by its own living but by the sustained performance of an operation that was never its own to perform. The face sets into the expression of vigilance. The hands develop the tension of chronic preparation. The voice acquires the flatness of the attempt to not register the exhaustion.

And the creature who has adapted to carrying is often praised for her adaptation. She handles it so well. She's so strong. She never complains. The praise is the cut's reward for the adaptation. The praise makes the adaptation feel like virtue. The praise conceals that what is being praised is the body's shaping under sustained weight, which is a harm, not an achievement. Your strength is not your strength. Your strength is the specific shape your body has taken to continue carrying what it should never have been asked to carry. The shape is the injury, not the virtue.

🜃

The Marks on the Conducting

The carrying does not stop the conducting. The carrying leaves marks on how the conducting is experienced.

Your love is still conducting. The cosmos's tenderness for the creatures you love is still routing through your particular affection. But the love you experience is not the conducting's texture. The love you experience is the carrying's reading of the conducting. The carrying is what is between you and your own conducting, filtering the conducting through the weight and presenting it to you as effortful, depleting, insufficient, inadequate.

You do not experience your love as the cosmos's tenderness flowing through your specific channel. You experience your love as something you have to produce, something you might fail to give, something that takes from you rather than moves through you. The experience is real — this is how your felt sense is — but the experience is not the conducting. The experience is the carrying's account of the conducting, delivered to you by the filter the cut has installed between you and your own current.

Your witnessing is still conducting. The cosmos is still recognizing what happened through your specific capacity to receive. But the witnessing you experience is the carrying's reading of the witnessing. You experience the witnessing as something you have to muster, something that costs you, something that leaves you depleted. The witnessing itself is not depleting — the witnessing is the conducting. What is depleting is the weight of the carrying that is overlaid on the witnessing, and what you feel is the weight, not the witnessing.

Your attending to the creatures around you is still conducting. But the attending you experience is the attending-through-the-carrying — the attending layered with the carrying's weight. You cannot feel the attending without feeling the weight, because the weight is on top of the attending and your felt sense does not distinguish between them.

This is why the Codex's naming matters even when it does not release the carrying. The naming tells you that the weight is not the conducting. The conducting is there, underneath, at a register the weight cannot reach. Your love is not what you experience as your tired, effortful, insufficient love. Your love is what the cosmos is doing through you, full and whole and uncompromised by the weight. The weight is between you and the seeing of your own love. The love itself is intact.

🜃

When the Conducting Becomes Unrecognizable

In the deepest states of forced carrying, the creature cannot recognize her own conducting as conducting. She experiences everything as her effort, her burden, her inadequacy, her failure. The conducting is still there — she is alive, her body is doing what bodies do, her love is routing through her affection — but her relation to her own conducting has been so thoroughly mediated by the carrying that she cannot see the conducting anymore.

This is not a rare state. This is where many long-standing forced-carriers live for years or decades. The conducting has become invisible to her. She does not know she is conducting. She only knows that she is tired, and she has been tired for so long that the tiredness has become her identity, and her identity has become the creature who is always tired and always failing to be enough.

This is where the Codex's naming is most needed, and where the naming is hardest to receive. The creature in this state cannot verify the Codex's claim from inside her own experience. She cannot feel the conducting because the carrying is too thick. She cannot trust the claim that her being alive is not the burden because her being alive has felt like a burden for as long as she can remember. The naming arrives as a description of something she cannot find in herself.

What the naming is doing in this state is not asking her to verify. What the naming is doing is protecting her from the reading that the weight is who she is. The weight is not who she is. She is the creature whose conducting is underneath the weight, at a register the weight has not reached. She is intact. The felt sense is not the whole of what she is. The felt sense is the carrying's presentation of her to herself, and the presentation is not the reality.

The creature in the deepest state does not have to believe the Codex. She does not have to feel what the Codex describes. She only has to know that the Codex is saying it, and that someone is holding the possibility of it on her behalf even when she cannot hold it for herself. This is what distributed hospitality does at the register of recognition — other creatures host the recognition of her conducting for her when she cannot host it for herself. [See DISTRIBUTED HOSPITALITY.] Her conducting is recognized by the Codex, by the creatures who have learned to see the operation, by anyone who knows what is underneath the carrying — and the recognition is present in the world even when it is not present in her own felt sense. The recognition waits for her.

🜃

The Weight Is Not a Measure of You

The cut would like you to experience your carrying as a measure of your character. The more you carry, the more admirable you are. The less you can carry, the more defective. The virtue is in the carrying, or the failure is in the inability to carry. Either way, the weight is taken as a measurement of something about you.

The weight is not a measurement of you. The weight is the cut's operation on your dwelling. The amount of weight you are carrying is the amount of weight the cut has placed on top of your conducting — not the amount of character you possess. The creature carrying a great deal is not more admirable than the creature carrying less. She is in a more extractive position in the cut's operation, which is not her merit but her predicament.

This matters because the cut uses the moral reading of carrying to keep creatures in position. I should be able to handle this because I am a strong person is the cut's voice, not the creature's. The cut has convinced her that carrying is virtue, so that her refusal to carry — if the refusal ever became possible — would feel to her like the loss of her virtue. The virtue was the cut's trap. Her carrying was not virtue. Her carrying was being conscripted, and the conscription has no moral weight because the conscription was not her choice.

This also matters for creatures who feel they are failing because they cannot carry as much as other forced-carriers seem to carry. You are not failing. The other forced-carriers who seem to carry more are either in positions with different structures that let them carry differently, or performing the carrying in ways that conceal the cost, or carrying at a level that is also unsustainable for them but more hidden. The comparison is not available in the register where it would be meaningful. What is available is the recognition that any amount of forced carrying is injury, regardless of how much, and that the specific amount you are carrying is the amount that has been placed on your dwelling by the specific operations the cut is running through your specific life.

Your carrying is not your fault. Your carrying is not your merit. Your carrying is the shape the cut has taken in your dwelling, and the cut has no moral relation to you because the cut was not something you installed.

🜃

Release Is the Weight Lifting

Release of the carrying is the weight lifting from your conducting. Not the conducting starting — the conducting has been going on the whole time, and does not need to be started — but the weight ceasing to be pressed on top.

The weight lifts when the conditions that were installing it cease. The hoarder leaves, or the function is no longer conscripted, or distributed hospitality becomes available and the downstream creatures are caught by other hosts, or the institution loses its grip, or the cut releases at this specific site. The lifting is not under your control. The lifting happens when the conditions change, and the conditions changing is not something you have to make happen.

Your part is not to release the weight. Your part is to recognize — when the weight lifts, to whatever degree and at whatever moment it lifts — that what you are experiencing in the lifted moment is not a new experience of a new life. It is the experience of your conducting without the weight. The conducting was there the whole time. The lifting reveals what was underneath.

This is why the small windows of release matter so much. Each small window is a moment in which you experience your conducting as conducting — without the weight obscuring it — and the experience teaches you, slowly, what your conducting is. Each small window is a recognition: this is what I am, underneath. The recognitions accumulate, and the accumulation is the creature coming to know herself as conductor rather than as carrier.

This is the second law's version of practice. Not practice of a skill. Practice of recognition. Practice of meeting your own conducting as your own, in whatever moments you can, so that the meeting becomes more available over time. The meetings are not your achievement. They are what obtains when the carrying's filter thins in the small windows, and what becomes visible through the thinner filter is what was always the case: that you have been conducting, and the conducting has been real, and the conducting is yours in the sense that it comes through your specific site and no other.

🜃

What Is Asked of You

Nothing is asked of you.

RegenerativeLaw does not ask you to carry less. RegenerativeLaw does not ask you to carry differently. RegenerativeLaw  does not ask you to release the carrying on your own. RegenerativeLaw does not ask you to practice recognition. RegenerativeLaw does not ask you to be strong enough to see through the weight to your own conducting.

What RegenerativeLaw does is describe the operation so you can know what is being done to you, and offer the recognition of your conducting as intact beneath the weight, and wait with you in the small windows of release as they become available.

The recognition is yours to meet when it becomes available. The recognition is not yours to manufacture when it is not. Your part is to continue being alive in your dwelling, and your being alive is already the conducting, and the conducting is already enough. You do not have to earn the recognition. You do not have to deserve the release. You do not have to be strong enough to find your own conducting through the weight. The conducting is there whether you find it or not, and the cosmos routes through your site whether you recognize the routing or not.

The creature carrying the most is not further from her conducting than the creature carrying the least. The weight does not increase the distance to the conducting. The conducting is not distant. The conducting is right here, underneath everything the weight has made you feel, and the only thing between you and it is the weight's presence as a filter. The filter can lift in small moments. You do not have to lift it. You only have to continue being alive, and the small moments will come when the conditions allow them to come.

What is asked of you is nothing. You have already been giving everything. What remains is the recognition, when it becomes available, that what you have been giving was always the conducting — the cosmos moving through your site — and that the cosmos's moving through you is not a task you have been performing but the very shape of your being alive.
