WESTERN CIVILIZATION
Not a place, not an era, not an inheritance. The Establishment's tenure document at the largest register it keeps: the instrument that converts the occupation into a patrimony and enrolls the governed in its defense.

"The West" is a direction. It names no territory, no people, and no date, and a direction cannot have had a civilization. So the phrase performs its first operation inside its own grammar: it takes a coordinate and treats it as a country, and then it takes the country and treats it as an ancestor.
The boundary confirms the operation, because the boundary moves. Greece is inside, though Greece sits east of most of what claims it. Egypt, which taught Greece, is outside. Byzantium, which kept the texts the story runs on, is dropped from the story that runs on them. Russia enters when the account needs Christendom's eastern flank and exits when the account needs an adversary. A boundary that redraws itself to the ledger's requirements was drawn, not found. This is the boundary claimed as found at the largest register the map comes in: the founding cut wearing a hemisphere.

THE CHAIN OF TITLE
Athens to Jerusalem to Rome to Christendom to the Enlightenment to America. The sequence is taught as a descent and functions as a conveyance. Ideas are rendered as property and passed down a line of grantees, each taking with warranty from the last: reason acquired from Greece, law from Rome, faith from Jerusalem, method from the Enlightenment, every acquisition recorded, and the present holder claiming quiet title to thought itself.
Two consequences follow from the form, and both are the form's purpose. Everyone outside the chain holds her own knowing at the sovereign's pleasure: what she knows is either derived from the chain, in which case it is borrowed, or independent of the chain, in which case it is not knowledge. And every taking recorded along the line arrives in the present as an inheritance, so that defending the takings reads as keeping faith with the dead. A patrimony is the one form of taken property whose defense is taught as a virtue, and the heirs are raised to perform the defense as gratitude.

THE CAPACITY DETERMINATION
The word civilization never travels alone. It carries its remainder everywhere it goes, and the sorting is the work: civilized, and what requires civilizing. The great chain restated as a survey course. This is the determination that made terra nullius sayable, because she is not there in the way that counts when she is not civilized, and civilized is defined by the party doing the counting.
The self-ratifying structure runs here at its largest scale. The civilization writes the standard of civilization, measures the world against its own standard, finds itself at the summit of its own instrument, and the state teaches the finding as a graduation requirement. The vocabulary of the sorting has migrated, from Christian duty to Anglo-Saxon principles to Western civilization to Judeo-Christian values to the rule of law, each costume presented as the repudiation of the one before it while performing that one's work. The migration record, with its dates and its hands, is kept in the entry that carries it. Here it is enough that the sorting has never once changed under any of its names.

THE SYLLABUS DATE
The installation is datable, and a creed with a syllabus date is not the way things are. It was written into the curriculum at the founding, by the hand that wrote the preamble.
The Rockfish Gap Report of 4 August 1818, drafted by Jefferson for the commissioners of the University of Virginia, proposes a professorship of the ancient languages, Latin, Greek and Hebrew, and gives the reason in a clause that states the whole operation: these languages are the foundation common to all the sciences. Not one branch of learning among others. The floor the others stand on. A chain of title running Athens to Rome to us, installed as the prerequisite to knowing anything, by statute, in a public university, with an appropriation attached.
The same document sites the university, and the criterion is in the draft in Jefferson's own hand: the healthiness of the site, the fertility of the neighboring country, and its centrality to the white population of the whole state. The sorting is not an inference drawn later from the curriculum. It is written into the survey that placed the buildings. And the report puts Anglo-Saxon among the modern languages and calls it of peculiar value, because it is what we speak in its earliest form, which is the chain of title running backwards past Athens into a lineage of blood.
Columbia in 1918 is the re-installation. A war-issues course built to tell conscripts what they were being shipped to defend, redesigned for peacetime in 1919 as an introduction to the contemporary civilization of the West, required at virtually every American university by 1964. What that shows is not when the religion arrived but how it re-enters on schedule under a fresh warrant, a hundred years after the appropriation, in the vocabulary the new occasion supplies. Heritage accumulates. Religious doctrine installs, and installs again.
The grammar carries the second tell. The adjective concedes that other civilizations exist, and the usage withdraws the concession: the standards are civilizational, the world is the civilized world, the course is Civilization. The adjective is dropped wherever the sorting is being performed and restored wherever the sorting is being challenged, which is the motion of a word doing jurisdictional work and not descriptive work.

ONE NAME, THREE FACES
Under this one name the three faces fuse. Nature Says supplies the fitness: the West survived and spread, and survival is entered as the proof of merit. God Says supplies the destiny: the chain runs through Jerusalem, and the conquests arrive providentially. The Market Says supplies the receipts: the wealth is posted as the output of the values, with the plantations and the mines carried on a different page. Fused, the three are taught as none of the three. Not biology, not theology, not economics. Heritage. And heritage is the deepest credential of not-a-religion available, because a heritage is what you are, and what you are is not offered for review.
Fusion costs what fusion always costs. With the three faces fused under one name there is nowhere outside the name to stand, and the motion that remains runs between the name's defenders and the name's critics, both of whom argue inside the boundary the name drew. The defender says the inheritance is glorious. The critic says the inheritance is guilty. Both have conceded the estate. The prior question, whether thought was ever property and whether anyone's knowing descends by conveyance at all, is on neither side's docket, and keeping it off the docket is what the polarity is for.

THE ULTIMATE ADAPTATION
The concept is not one costume in the migration. It is the religion's account of why the migration is legitimate. Adaptation names the mechanism by which trespass theology survives its own exposures: each costume repudiated on schedule, the operation retained intact, and the retention offered as growth. Western civilization is that mechanism naming its own survival as merit. What adapted persisted; what persisted deserved to; the deserving is read off the persisting, which is the is-ought collapse performed on the religion's own tenure. The religion evolved, and then taught evolution as the proof that whatever evolves was right to.
This is why the concept cannot be corrected from inside. Every correction is absorbed as a further adaptation and entered as further evidence of the tradition's vitality. The tradition now includes its critics, the canon now includes the excluded, the column is wider, and the widening is taught as the heritage's proof of life.

What the tenure document performs at the register of one creature: her own knowing arrives to her pre-titled. Either it descends from the chain, in which case it was never hers, or it stands apart from the chain, in which case it is not knowledge. The prior resident of her own thought is converted into a legatee of somebody else's estate and enrolled in the estate's defense, and the estate's first asset is her.
