She stops one thing she has been doing. Not everything, not the job, not the relation. One performance, named and specific: the warmth supplied at the start of the meeting, the apology that opens the message, the enthusiasm produced on request, the availability that was never asked for out loud and is expected anyway.
Then she reads what follows, and there are two outcomes.
Either nothing follows. In which case the performance was never load-bearing, nobody was collecting it, and she has recovered whatever it cost her, permanently, at no price.
Or something follows. A temperature change, a reclassification, a conversation about fit, a sudden interest in her tone. In which case she now knows what was being extracted, who was collecting it, and what its removal is worth to them. Neither outcome is a loss, and that is the property no other available move has.

WHY ADDITION CANNOT MEASURE
Every answer to what do I do next is an addition. A practice, a boundary, a script, a framework, a conversation to have, a document to file. Each adds something to what she is already doing.
And an addition tells her nothing about what was already being taken, because the taking continues underneath it at exactly the rate it did before. She now does the old thing and the new thing. If the new thing helps, she cannot tell whether it helped or whether the extraction simply had room for it.
Subtraction is the only operation whose result is information, because the thing that responds to a subtraction is the thing that was relying on it. Nothing else in the room will identify itself. The configuration does not announce what it is drawing; the drawing is invisible while it is uninterrupted, and it is uninterrupted by every addition she can make.
So this is not a better answer to the question. It is the observation that the question, asked in the additive form, is unanswerable from inside, and that the subtractive form is answerable in a week.

WHAT IT COSTS TO RUN
One room. One creature. One performance. No belief in any cosmology, no vocabulary, no framework adopted, nothing said to anyone about what she is doing or why.
That is the whole of it, and the smallness is not modesty. A test that required her to announce it would have changed the thing it was measuring, and a test that required her to accept an account first would be the account recruiting evidence for itself.
She is not asked to believe that something is being extracted. She is asked to stop one thing and see whether anything objects.

WHERE THIS COULD BE USED AGAINST HER
The second outcome is not free, and an entry that presented it as free would be written by someone who does not pay for it.
If something follows, the something lands on her. The reclassification is real. The reference that does not come is real. A woman whose rent depends on the room is being told that the instrument for learning what the room is doing to her is an instrument that may cost her the room, and that is a true description of her position rather than a flaw in the test.
What follows is not unmapped, and knowing its shape in advance is most of what makes the test survivable. The sequence a room runs against someone who has stopped supplying something has been cataloged in order and in detail by people who were counting: the information that stops reaching her, the meetings she hears about afterwards, the work reassigned, the sudden documentation of performance that was never documented before, the solicitous question about whether she is quite well, the joke that is not a joke. She does not have to discover the list one item at a time as it is run on her. She can read it first, and then the second or third item arrives as confirmation of a reading rather than as evidence about her.
So the choice of which performance to stop is the whole of the judgment, and it is hers. The test runs on the cheapest available one, not the most important one. She is looking for the smallest thing whose removal she can survive, because the reading comes back the same from a small subtraction as from a large one: the response is not proportional to what was stopped, it is proportional to what was being collected, and that is precisely why she does not need to risk anything large to get it.
An account that told her to stop the load-bearing thing first would be spending her body to prove itself.

WHAT WOULD REFUTE IT
Stated so it can be held against this entry, because an account that cannot say what would refute it is decoration.
If she runs it and six months later the same thing is happening in the same room at the same cost, the account was wrong and she should discard it. Not amended, not deepened, not reinterpreted as a deeper stage. Discarded.
The claim is testable by one creature in one week without her taking on anything she would have to defend later, and the reason to state its failure condition plainly is that everything else offered to her in this register is unfalsifiable, which is how it goes on being offered.

The room was configured so that she could not tell what it was drawing from her. Not by anyone deciding to configure it that way, and not by any rule she could find and read.
