The full capture sequence at the scale of a nation. An independent attempt, a catastrophe the dominant party helped produce, a rescue offered on the rescuer's terms, and a governing class that experienced the surrender as salvation.

The sequence has six moves and they run in order. An independent attempt at standing of one's own. A catastrophe that removes the means of continuing. A rescue offered by the party the attempt was made against. The source of legitimacy transferred as the price. An optimization requirement installed once legitimacy runs through the new source. And a vocabulary supplied that makes the optimization read as improvement.
Scotland between 1698 and the Clearances is the clearest documented instance, because the whole sequence ran inside two generations and left a paper trail with figures in it.
The sequence is not Scottish. Scotland is where it can be checked.

THE ATTEMPT, AND THE HAND THAT HELPED IT FAIL
Scotland in the 1690s was subordinate and not yet absorbed: joined to England by a shared crown since 1603, and holding its own parliament, its own law, its own trade. The Navigation Acts kept Scottish merchants out of English colonial commerce. A colony of its own was the way to independent coordinates.
The Company of Scotland raised the money by public subscription, and it drew somewhere between a fifth and a half of the country's liquid capital. Not merchant money alone. Nobles mortgaged estates. Widows put in inheritances. A nation's savings went into a single position.
The first expedition sailed in 1698 with around twelve hundred settlers to Darién on the isthmus of Panama. Disease took hundreds within months. The ground was claimed by Spain and Scotland had secured no recognition of its title. And William, who ruled both kingdoms, instructed the English colonies in the Americas to withhold assistance. The second expedition sailed before news of the first had returned, found the ruins, tried to hold, was attacked, surrendered, and abandoned the position in 1700. Roughly two thousand dead, the ships, the stores, and the capital.

THE RESCUE IS THE TRAP
England offered union in 1707, and the offer carried a payment: the Equivalent, £398,085, presented as Scotland's share of an assumed English debt and going substantially to compensate the Darién investors.
The nobles got their money back. What was surrendered was the parliament. The independent source of Scottish authority, its separate legal coordinates and its capacity to decline, ended not by conquest but by the acceptance of relief.
And here is why the trap holds. The capacity to refuse the rescue was in the shares. The men who could have organized a refusal of incorporation were the men whose estates were in the Company, so the catastrophe did not merely weaken the country: it removed, specifically and by name, the party positioned to say no to what came next.
A prior authority does not have to be destroyed when it can be superseded, and the installation is more durable when the prior occupant accepts it as necessary relief. Scotland's governing class experienced the Union as salvation, delivered by the party whose withholding had helped produce the emergency.

THE OPTIMIZATION REQUIREMENT
Once legitimacy runs through London, the land has to yield in London's terms, and that is not a policy but a condition of holding position.
Highland tenure supported people. Large populations in kinship relation to a chief, with overlapping claims on the same ground: grazing, seasonal movement, kelp, common use. None of it yielded anything convertible into standing in the new capital. Cheviot and Blackface sheep yielded wool, wool fed the mills, and the returns converted into debt service, marriage alliances, commissions for sons, and Company shares.
So the people on the ground were not, in the new accounting, inhabitants with a relation to their territory. They were an inefficient use of land that could yield, and the Clearances are that sentence carried out.

IMPROVEMENT WAS THE WORD
The vocabulary that made the removal legible as progress was supplied by the most distinguished intellectual movement the country ever produced, and this is the part that has to be said carefully.
Smith, Hume and Ferguson were not villains and did not write instructions for clearance. They worked inside improvement, which they took to be a description of how societies develop rather than a way of seeing that could only register what improvement counts. A vocabulary does not have to be authored with an intention to serve the use it is put to, and this one was put to work by men who had read it honestly.
Inside it, clearance was not violence. It was correction. The people were not destroyed, they were released from inefficient conditions into productive ones: wage labor in the cities, settlement in the colonies, regiments. The most sophisticated form the vocabulary takes is not a defense of the extraction. It is an account in which the extraction is what progress consists of.

THE CLEARED BECAME THE CLEARERS
The chain closes and the closing is the part that makes it a mechanism rather than an episode.
London made the Scottish elite: debt relief, recognition of their property claims in British law, access to imperial commerce and military position. Having been made, they had to perform the making, which meant delivering returns that justified the position. The chief who had held authority through obligation to his people now held property under a law that recognized no such obligation, and the two tenures were not compatible.
He cleared, and he did it sincerely. The subsumed administers without cruelty, because what he is performing is the requirement his position carries, in the vocabulary that makes the requirement read as improvement.
Then the cleared populations became material. Highland regiments took men whose own clans had been broken and sent them to clear other people's ground in India, in North America, in Africa. The sequence does not end in a victim class. It ends in a supply of hands, and the hands are the ones the sequence was run on.

The reason to keep the case is not that Scotland was singular. It is that every move is documented with a figure or a date: the subscription, the order to withhold, the count of the dead, the sum of the Equivalent, the dissolution, the sheep, the regiments. Anyone repeating the sequence today has no need of the paperwork, because the shape is available without it, and a shape that can be run without records is a shape that leaves none. This one left them, which is the only reason it can be shown.
