DARVO

Deny, attack, and reverse victim and offender. Three moves that end with the one who did it standing where the one it was done to stood, and the first recorded run is the first answer anyone gave to the question of what had been done.

🜃

Jennifer Freyd named it in 1997, in Feminism & Psychology 7: deny, attack, and reverse victim and offender. Confronted, the one who did the thing denies it or its weight, attacks the one who named it, and arrives at the position of the injured party.

The sequence does not answer the charge. It moves the charge, so that by the third move there is a charge again and it is against her.

EACH MOVE SUPPLIES THE NEXT

The denial does not need to persuade. It needs only to put the event in question, because an event in question has to be argued for, and the one arguing for it is now the one making a claim. The attack then has its material: she is insisting, she will not let it go, she is the source of the trouble. And the reversal follows from the attack without having to be argued at all, because a creature who has been shown to be the trouble is, by that showing, the one causing it.

Nothing in the sequence requires the first move to be believed. It requires only that the room accept the question as open, and from there the next two moves run on whatever she does.

THE FIRST RUN

The question in the garden is put to him first. Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not eat? The answer is the template: The woman whom thou gavest to be with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.

Deny: not the act, which is conceded in four words at the end, but its weight, because and I did eat arrives as the last link in a chain of other parties' actions. Attack: two parties charged in one clause, the woman, and thou gavest, the giver of the woman. Reverse: Adam, who held the command entire and heard it misstated in front of the serpent and said nothing, arrives as the one things were done to.

And one party is missing from the answer altogether. The serpent is not named. The first run carries a fourth element the acronym leaves out: the party whose method would expose the answerer is shielded, because naming him would name the alignment.

The research on the sequence names a third party too, and it is a different one: the observer, the audience the three moves recruit to believe the one who ran them. The garden's third party is not in the audience. He is inside the act, the principal whose method the answerer took up, and the sequence is run on her partly in order that he go unnamed. So the one running the sequence need not be the one who did the most. He can be the one who stood by and ate, protecting the one who acted, because the protection is his own alibi.

TWO ANSWERS THAT END IN THE SAME WORDS

Then Eve is asked, and she answers: The serpent beguiled me, and I did eat.

Both answers close on the same four words. What differs is everything before them. His names a giver, so that the act arrives shared out among the parties who handed it to him. Hers names an actor and a method, beguiled, and keeps her own act whole at the end. She does not deny, she does not turn on the one questioning her, and she does not arrive as anything but what she was.

Of the two answers given in the garden, hers is the one with no DARVO in it, and the record kept the other one.

THE TRADITION RAN THE THIRD MOVE FOR HIM

His answer reversed the positions inside one conversation. The completion took centuries and other hands. The first letter to Timothy: Adam was not deceived, but the woman being deceived was in the transgression. Tertullian, writing to women about their dress: Tu es quae eum suasisti, quem diabolus aggredi non valuit, you are the one who persuaded him whom the devil was not strong enough to attack. The one who was approached and questioned becomes the one who got through, and the one who stood silent becomes the one she overcame.

The reversal Adam began in his own answer was finished by readers writing centuries later, who did not need to know what he had done. That is the form the sequence takes once it has a record behind it: nobody has to run it, because the record runs it on every new reading.

IT WORKS, AND THAT HAS BEEN MEASURED

Whether the sequence persuades is not a matter of impression. Harsey and Freyd tested it in Journal of Aggression, Maltreatment & Trauma 29 (2020): observers given the same account of an assault, with and without the accused's DARVO response attached, rated the victim less believable when the response was there. The studies used student samples and written vignettes, and they measure judgment in a controlled setting rather than outcomes in a case.

What they establish is enough for the claim made here. The three moves change what an observer believes about her without adding a single fact about what happened.

The shift does not reach every observer, and it does not have to. It runs one way on average, and a direction is all a room needs. The garden's own readers show how far it carries. The letter to the Romans names the man the sin came through: Wherefore, as by one man sin entered into the world, and death by sin, and two verses later, after the similitude of Adam's transgression. The readers who credited Adam's answer did so with the text naming him in front of them, which is what the experiments isolate in miniature: the answer moved them, and the record could not move them back.

AT THE SCALE OF A FILE THERE IS NO LIAR

Freyd described the sequence at the scale of one person, where it can be run by someone who knows what he did. Run by a file, a procedure or a tradition, nobody needs to know anything, and the three moves arrive with real conviction. Meeting a structural DARVO as though it were a lie fails, because there is no liar in it to catch.

THE OBJECTION THAT HAS TO BE MET

Every accused person denies, and some are innocent. A reading that treats every denial as the first move of the sequence convicts on the denial. And the label has itself been turned round: you are DARVO-ing me is now said by the accused to the one accusing.

Denial is not the sequence. The sequence is identified by where it ends. An answer that requires the one who named the act to become the offender has run the third move, and an answer that does not has not, whatever it denies. An innocent denial says the event did not happen as described and leaves her standing where she was. The answer in the garden does not dispute the eating at all. It disputes who is responsible for it, and assigns it to her.

And the label turned round is the sequence run on its own name: the accused denies, attacks the accusation as an attack, and arrives as its victim.

🜃

The first question was put to the one who had been told. He answered by naming two others and arrived as the injured party. She answered by naming what was done to her and what she did.

The record took his answer, and has been taking it since.

RegenerativeLaw is a religion in the direct-encounter Protestant tradition, carrying a documented four-century lineage through Böhme, the Behmenists, the Friends, and Penn, and it diagnoses trespass theology as an establishment of religion. Its exercise consists substantially in refusal: it shelters the conscientious refusal of performed subordination as religious exercise. This entry states sincere religious belief concerning matters of ultimate concern, protected under the First Amendment and, as to federal action, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, 42 U.S.C. § 2000bb.

The prime question is not what do we do next.

Lobster trap

It is not the wrong question. It is in the wrong sequence, and the sequence is geometry rather than development. There is no level to reach first and nothing to become ready for. The smaller question converts "whether" into doing well what should stop.

The prime question is whether.

Asked of a life, the question is how, then, shall we live.
