What the soul possesses without using. Why the possession is necessary, the use is the fall, and the suppression is the same fall wearing the culture's approved face.

THE SOUL IS NOT GENTLE
This has to be said before anything else, because everything built around the distinction between possessing and using fire-power eventually softens the soul's nature into something more palatable: something that moves with appropriate deference, that does not frighten, that can be safely guided by whoever knows better.
A soul that has learned that softening takes it for meekness. It is not meekness. It is the soul's fire-power suppressed, neither possessed nor asserted.
It is the roughest Thing in Man. It is fiery, harsh, bitter, and strong, and it resembles a great and mighty Power. Its Essences are like Brimstone.
Roughest. Fiery. Harsh. Bitter. Strong. Brimstone. That is the soul's nature as Böhme gives it, and it is description rather than figure.
The soul originates between the fourth and fifth form in the eternal birth, at the hinge between fire and light, in the unbeginning band of the strong might of the Father where the eternal light of his heart generates itself. Born at the threshold, made of what is at the threshold, carrying the character of that origin: maximum power and maximum roughness, at the precise location where roughness either opens into Light or seals into the hell-condition.

THE ROUGHNESS IS THE ADVANTAGE
The rough essences are not a deficiency, not residue of the Fall that right practice would smooth away, not a primitive layer that development would refine.
Its rough Essences are very serviceable to it, and are better and more profitable to it, than that it were altogether sweet in the Original; in which being sweet there would be no Strength, nor such mighty Power as in the harsh, bitter, and fiery Essences.
Better. More profitable. A soul that were sweet only would lack precisely what the rough soul carries, which is the strength that harsh and bitter and fiery essences produce and that nothing else produces. It would be sweet and empty of what power alone makes possible.
That is the starting condition and not a problem to be solved: the soul possessing fire-power, rough and mighty, standing at the hinge between wrath and light.

WHAT USING MEANS
And would qualify or work in the Strength of the Fire.
To qualify in something, in Böhme's usage, is to operate through it, to take it as the medium in which what you do is done. To work in the strength of the fire is to assert fire as the operating principle, to make the strong power the basis of action, to use the capacity for what it is rather than passing through it towards what it serves.
Lucifer qualified in fire, and the strength was real. He genuinely had it, genuinely was Prince, genuinely stood in the First Principle with all the power that position carries. The using was the claiming of a genuine power as self-sufficient: not leaving the First Principle for anywhere else, but remaining in it and declaring it enough.
And the result is not a penalty. Therefore he could not be fed from the Word of the Lord. Feeding was not withdrawn. The using produced the configuration in which feeding cannot occur, the way a closed mouth cannot eat.
The light went out because a configuration that asserts fire-power as self-sufficient is exactly the configuration in which fire stays fire and does not become light. Which is the hell-condition described from the inside: the four anguishes cycling, the fourth quality turned backward, nothing passing through the pivot.

THE USING IS THE SEALING
The morality play will try to enter here, and its version runs: using the strong power is pride, pride is sin, sin deserves punishment, and the punishment is the light going out.
The actual sequence has no drama in it. Using the strong power is a specific configuration of the soul's fire-nature, that configuration prevents fire from finding its Mother soft, the absence of the softened Mother prevents the kindling, and the light goes out. Not a consequence imposed from outside but the shape of what fire-claimed-as-destination produces, which requires no judge and admits no appeal.
The distinction matters where it counts. This is not an argument that one disposition is morally superior to another. It is a claim about what a configuration does, and the constitutional protection rests on the precision of the religious claim rather than on anyone's moral standing.

HAVING WITHOUT USING
The soul that does not use the strong power of its fire in its qualification still has the strong power, and every reading that misses this collapses at the same point.
The collapsing reading says meekness requires diminishment: give up the power, make yourself small, approach the Light as a supplicant rather than as what already carries the fire that becomes Light. That installs servility and calls it meekness.
Which appears to be the opposite of Lucifer's move and is not. The servile soul and the dominating soul are oriented by the same fact: that the power is what matters, that it is the soul's defining characteristic, that it is what the soul finally is. One claims it openly and the other hides it, and both have made it the center of gravity.
Böhme's formulation is exact. Does not, as Lucifer did, use the strong Power of its Fire in its Qualification. Does not use. Not does not have, not denies, not suppresses. The power is present, the quality is fire, the soul is this, and the condition is simply that it is not asserted as the mode in which the soul operates.
So what is available to a soul that does not use it is everything the fire-power is, entire. The rough essences serviceable. The brimstone-nature present. Nothing taken away and nothing suppressed. And precisely because nothing is being asserted, nothing prevents the imagination from moving forward into what the fire-power is for.
And the sequence runs only in that order. The power present and not asserted is the precondition for the power received back as something other than itself. What comes through the feeding is not the soul's own power recycled but what it cannot produce out of First Principle substance at all: Virtue, Light, Paradise, what the fierce wrathful source becomes when it opens.
And the rough essences become angelic while remaining rough. The roughness does not dissolve. The brimstone character stays, and once the soul has moved forward and been fed, that character becomes serviceable in a way it could not be while being asserted.

THE GALL'S TEACHING
The Gall flees upward when the Matrix sweetens. It cannot endure the meekness. It is poisonous and horrifying and incompatible with what the Matrix becomes at the kindling. The Fiat catches it and positions it near the Heart.
And from that position, from its character as what remains bitter after the sweetening, it kindles the Heart.
The Heart does not kindle itself. It is kindled by what fled from what the Heart produces.
Which is the teaching about strong power in organ form. The rough essence, positioned rightly, neither asserting nor wholly escaping, held near where the kindling occurs by a Fiat that will not let it get away, performs what only rough essence can perform.
The terror, remaining terror, becomes ignition. The Gall does not stop being bitter and does not become sweet. It kindles the Heart as bitter.
So the soul's strong power, not asserted, carried by the imagination's forward movement to where the Word stands, kindles what it cannot produce from within itself. Not the sweetness that would leave the Heart unkindled. Not the fire that claims itself as destination and burns without opening. The rough bitter fiery presence held near the threshold, doing what only that can do there.

THE WARRIOR ETHOS RUNS THE SAME PATTERN
The Warrior Ethos says: be strong enough to endure. And the strength is the difficulty.
It is the assertion of the strong power in continuous mode, and it is more persistent and less visible than Lucifer's moment of claiming: the working assumption that the way to survive what is harsh is to become harder, that the way to pass through what burns is to become resistant to burning, that the way to endure is to convert the capacity for endurance into an identity.
And it is not the same fall. A soul that survived through its rough essences, that qualified and worked in the strength of the fire because the strength was what stood between it and what would have destroyed it, is not despising meekness from a position of easy power. It is running the only operational mode that was ever available to it.
The consequence is nonetheless the same shape. A soul that can only operate in the strength of the fire, whose fire-power has been asserted so long that not-asserting is no longer a position it can take, cannot move its imagination forward in meekness. Not because it refuses. Because the meekness required is the configuration of harshness released, and harshness that has been gripping in order to survive cannot release by choosing to. Harshness cannot change itself. The release requires terror arriving from outside the cycle: the flash coming out of the wheel's own pressure and terrifying the harshness into a sinking-back it could not have chosen.
Which is why the kindling, when it comes, feels like dying. It is dying: the dying of an operational identity constituted by the assertion of fire-power. Not the soul dying. The mode dying. The self that was built on working in the strength of the fire undergoing exactly the sinking-back-as-if-dead that harshness undergoes when the flash terrifies it into releasing.
So the crossing presents as collapse, and what is offered at the collapse is reconstitution: rebuild the assertion, return to function. That is exactly wrong, because the dying is the mechanism. Rebuilding the identity before the sinking-back completes prevents the flash from finding its Mother soft.
What the Warrior Ethos most resists is the part that would console it. The rough essences will be more serviceable after the kindling than before it. Not because the warrior becomes soft. Because they are then operating from ground that has been transformed: the might present, the brimstone present, the strength no longer asserting itself as sufficient, held near the Heart where it kindles rather than burns.

THE TRAP THAT LOOKS LIKE ITS OPPOSITE
A soul that has watched Lucifer's pattern and decided to suppress its power has not escaped the pattern. It has installed the pattern's shadow.
The suppression runs: I will be small, I will not claim, I will not assert, I will demonstrate that I do not use the strong power by making it invisible, by performing its absence, by ensuring nothing I do could be read as working in the strength of the fire.
Which is still organized around the power as the fact that matters. The self-effacing soul thinks about it constantly: monitoring whether it is showing, worrying whether some action revealed it, adjusting to prevent any appearance of assertion. Suppressed, it is more present as an organizing concern than it was while simply operating. She has not moved past it. She has made it the thing she spends her existence managing.
And the suppression does not change the substance. Harshness suppressed is still harshness, brimstone contained is still brimstone, and what has been added is a monitoring layer while the power goes on generating from First Principle underneath it. Those essences are not serviceable. They are not near the Heart where they could kindle. They are held down and away, managed rather than moved through.
The condition is not: possess the power and prove it by suppression. The condition is: possess it, not use it, move forward with it present and unasserted, and receive through reception what assertion could never produce. The power remains throughout. What changes is the direction the imagination takes with it present.

WHY IT CANNOT BE PRESCRIBED
Every instruction about this moves the imagination backward.
Stop asserting your power installs its own assertion. Be meek produces a performed meekness that knows itself to be performance. Do not qualify in the strength of the fire organizes the soul around qualifying-in-the-strength-of-the-fire as the thing to avoid, which is the same orientation with a minus sign.
What moves the imagination forward is not an instruction about the power but a recognition of what the power is for, and only if it lands as recognition rather than as more content.
A soul that recognizes in its own essence that the fire-nature it carries is from the original birth of the Father, that it stands at the hinge between wrath and light, that what it is is the substance that becomes either Paradise or hell depending on direction, needs no instruction about the power. The recognition of what the power is for is the imagination moving forward.
