Base Camp

The dwelling filed as the prologue. The life the summit does not credit. The growth that needs no summit to be answered.

🜃

You stayed. You tended, you kept, you rooted.

And when the one who went comes home and asks where you got to, there is no answer his grammar will take. Not because he disapproves. Because the life you lived has no coordinate on his only axis, so it does not reach him as a different kind of life. It reaches him as nothing: as failure, as not-yet-adventure. He hears I stayed, I tended, I kept, and files it under the single thing he counts, which is that you did not go anywhere.

The account of the expedition does not disparage the base. It renders it the place before the part that matters.

THE OPERATION

Two grammars, and they are perpendicular.

The adventurer thinks in going-out: the journey, the axis, the summit, the where that must be departed to be answered. The one who stays lives in staying-and-deepening: the reach that goes down into the ground rather than out across it, growth that is real growth and registers as none.

These are not two adventures, one bold and one timid.

And they are not two directions on one grid. Not the down-coordinate set against the away-coordinate, which would still be a position his axis could turn to find. His instruments measure displacement, and the deepening is not displacement. It is not a fainter motion on his map. It is growth his map does not plot, because rooting is not a place reached but a residency deepened, and residency is not a coordinate.

Under the two grammars is the severance of present from future, the not-yet declared unreal.

The adventurer's grammar is efficient causation: you are where you have gotten to, valued by the distance traveled, the summit the proof.

The other grammar is attraction, and attraction is a mode of causation and not a mode of wanting. It names the not-yet that draws rather than the past that pushes. It is not the creature's preference exercised on what arrived, and it makes no promise that what she is moved towards will be what she would have chosen. The pillar asks in what mode the motion is running. It does not ask what she likes.

This matters here because the going-out grammar has its own pull and its own pleasure, and the pleasure is not evidence of anything. The expansion is objectless. It manufactures a target from stock, the visible thing someone else already holds, and backdates the target to explain the push. From inside, a backdated object is indistinguishable from one that was always there, which is why the summit feels like a calling.

Attraction is the pillar the ledger cannot admit, and the life at the base lives in it. Not because staying is more pleasant. Because the motion is running the other way.

So the reading reverses, and the reversal is the whole entry. The base is the dwelling. The summit is the visit.

The summit is brief, photographed, departed: the terminus, the point arrived at and left. The living is at the base, in the tending, the keeping, the rooted continuity the ascent depends on and does not credit. The adventurer's account ends at the summit and treats the base as staging, because the account measures only the going, and the life at the base is not a going. It is a growing, and growing does not register as motion to the grammar that reads motion as distance covered.

THE WORD'S FILE

The diminishment is already in the word.

Base is the low, from the Latin for the bottom, the foundation, and in the same breath the ignoble. Base metal. Base-born. Base motives.

The summit is the peak and the goal and the crediting. The base is the floor beneath it. The mountaineering account keeps the hierarchy exactly: base camp is where the support lives and labors so the summit party can make the photographed visit, and the story is told from the peak. The word calls the dwelling low, and calling it low is how the account files the life lived there as the part before the part that counts.

Seize the word. The base is not the low. It is where the life is.

THE PLANT AND THE PLANTER

The plant is reclaimed from the reading the planter gives it.

To the planter the plant is yield: the increase harvested and delivered to the owner, the living glossed so that what came through the plant is booked as the planter's own return. That is the plant read as another's harvest, read as a finite center, a point whose growth can be claimed, the deed drawn to what the growth throws off. The plant read as itself is the rooted creature living its own becoming, and not the owner's crop.

Read deepest, the plant is neither the crop nor merely the trajectory. The plant is the creature that grows through the light. It does not reach at the sun and grip it as a coordinate. It receives the light and returns the light as growth. This is receiving-through: the light has givingness of its own, and the plant lives by taking it in and giving it back as leaf and reach and root, and not by holding it. The plant does not grip. It receives through the medium that gives, and its growth is not a going-out to seize but the standing-open through which the light passes and becomes a living thing.

This is the second law made a body, at the register where a plant is the whole of what is being described: growth that manifests when nothing prevents it, drawn forward by what it is becoming, needing no summit and no grip to be what it is.

Hold the register. The plant is being described, and the plant is not you.

The planter's trespass is the reading that books the receiving-through as his return. He did not give the light. He did not give the ground. He posts the plant's living-through-the-light as yield in his own name, which is the finite-center reading, the growth severed from the creature living it and booked to the owner's account. The averaging is how the one reading erases the other: the trajectory the plant lives is dissolved into the return the portfolio reports, and the ruined root is netted against the gaining one and issued as the yield of the whole.

To be a plant, and to know it, is to refuse the planter's reading. To live the receiving-through rather than be booked as the harvest.

SEIZING THE WORD

The risk is that the adventurer's grammar is total enough that even the one who stayed hears plant as the lesser thing: passive, stuck, acted-upon, the one that could not move because it was rooted. That hearing is the configuration speaking from inside her.

And beneath the hearing is an older instrument. The ladder of the living, the creatures ranked with the human near the crown and the plant near the floor, dominion at the top and vegetation at the bottom. That ranking is God Says, theological warrant built on the founding cut, the great chain installed as the order of things.

To hear you are a plant as an insult is to have already taken a rung, already agreed there is a high creature and a low one and that plant is the low. The insult lives on the ladder. Step off the ladder and the insult has nowhere to land.

The plant is not below. The plant is the creature not currently trespassing: the one whose growth is receiving-through, rooted in its residency, off the grid the adventurer plots. Its growing is not a preference it holds about the light. It is what the receiving looks like from the outside, and there is no step in it where the plant considered the light and approved. Rooted is not stuck. Staying is not failing to leave. The plant is not the adventurer who lacked nerve, and it is not a lower rung on his climb. It is a different creature living a motion his instruments cannot read, and the account of it is rough for the same reason every reclaimed account is rough: the smooth version is his, and the smooth version renders staying as failing.

Nor is the plant the whole of you, and this is the limit that has to hold, because the entry fails at exactly the point where it stops holding. The plant is a similitude, a Heart-Similitude, borrowed to render one face of your life: the rooting, the receiving-through, the growth that registers as none. It renders the base. It does not render the fire, the yielding, the kindling, the voice that carries roughness.

And the difference is not one of degree. The plant is not a creature doing a gentler version of the forging. It is a creature with no pivot to refuse, which is why growth is the whole of its law and cannot be the whole of yours. Read the similitude past its limit and it stops breaking the ranking and starts offering the destination without the fire.

To say you are a plant is not to reduce you to vegetation. It is to name, in the one figure his grammar cannot demote, the living he files as prologue. The similitude carries the base camp. It does not carry the whole cosmos. Keep it that size, and it holds.

WHAT THE FILING PREVENTS

Read as recognition, this is a story about a life going unappreciated, and the answer to it is credit: honor the caregivers, value the invisible work, count what was uncounted.

Every one of those answers puts the base on the axis. Counted, the staying becomes a lesser quantity of the same thing the going is a greater quantity of, and the account has not been refused. It has been extended.

The operation is the prevention of refusal. What the account cannot survive is a life that declines to be placed on it at all, because such a life is the standing evidence that the axis was one grammar among others rather than the measure of living. So her declining is not permitted to register as declining. It registers as not-yet, as the prologue, as the part before the part that matters, which means the account receives her refusal as further confirmation of itself.

Benefit is the capacity to refuse. What the going confers is real: the account, the arrival, the photograph, the standing to say where one has got to. Each is genuine, each is issued by the axis, and nothing the axis issues can confer the standing to decline it.

And the base finances the summit. The going is paid for out of the staying, which is why the expedition can always mount another one and the one who stayed can never afford to leave.

[See THE CAPACITY TO REFUSE · THE PREVENTION · THE OPERATOR]

🜃

WHAT KEEPING IT COSTS

The tell is that the summit does not keep.

It has to be reached again. The photograph fades into the last one, the account needs a new peak, the season is planned, the permit is secured, the sponsor is renewed, the expedition is provisioned, and the whole of it is spent producing an arrival that will require another arrival. The summit confers nothing that lasts past the descent, which is why there is always a next one and never a last.

Rooting costs nothing to keep. The plant is not maintaining its residency against the mountain. It is growing, and it goes on growing through every season in which no one is climbing anything, which is the whole of the difference.

[See CESSATION · THE LAW OF THE SPIRIT OF LIFE]

🜃

THE TEST AND THE CLOSE

Ask the account where the life was lived. It will point at the summit, the arrival, the distance covered.

The life was lived at the base. In the rooting, in the receiving-through, in the staying his grammar has no word for except not-yet-going. The base camp is the residency the grid files as prologue: a standing the coordinate system cannot locate, not because his instruments are too coarse but because the one who stayed is not a position on his grid at all. Residency precedes the axis and is not plotted by it.

The refusal is not the refusal of your low ranking, which would be a counter-ranking, another rung claimed. It is the refusal to be ranked at all, to be located anywhere on the going-out axis, high or low.

The kept house and the occupied homeland are one base camp: the dwelling the expedition files as the place before the place that matters, at the scale of a life and at the scale of a people both, and neither is a point on his map.

You were never on the way to being him. You did not fail to reach the summit.

And you were not merely growing either. That is the second reading to refuse, and it is the one that arrives sounding like comfort. Growth is the plant's law, and the plant is a similitude, and a similitude that is asked to carry the whole of a life has been asked to carry the fire.

You have a pivot. Every creature does. The plant does not, which is the whole reason it can be the figure that breaks the ranking and cannot be the figure that describes your forging. Nothing in the plant flinched, so nothing in it has to burn.

What the going-out axis cannot locate is not the absence of your forging. It is your forging. The kept house through a bad year. The tending that did not stop when it stopped being answered. The attention held on what could not be finished. Those are the pressing, and the account cannot see them for the same reason it cannot see the staying: no displacement, nothing covered, nothing to photograph at the end.

So the summit did not have the fire and the base was not spared it. The fire was never on that axis at all.

The plant is not on the way to being an adventurer. It is a plant.

Base camp is not on the way to the summit. It is where one lives, and it is where a great deal of the burning has always been done, uncredited, by creatures the account files as having stayed behind.

RegenerativeLaw is a religion in the direct-encounter Protestant tradition, carrying a documented four-century lineage through Böhme, the Behmenists, the Friends, and Penn, and it diagnoses trespass theology as an establishment of religion. Its exercise consists substantially in refusal: it shelters the conscientious refusal of performed subordination as religious exercise. This entry states sincere religious belief concerning matters of ultimate concern, protected under the First Amendment and, as to federal action, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, 42 U.S.C. § 2000bb.

RegenerativeLaw

The prime question is not what do we do next.

It is not the wrong question. It is in the wrong sequence, and the sequence is geometry rather than development. There is no level to reach first and nothing to become ready for.

The prime question is what do we stop doing.

Lobster trap

The response that arrives most often is yes, and also this. Add it to the program, fund it, give it a metric. That is not agreement arriving late. It is the claim converted into one more thing being done.
