How then shall we live is asked given that there are two. Two laws are running, in the same world and the same bodies, and the one keeping the books presents itself as the only one there is. Discernment is the name for telling which is running in a particular room, a particular offer, a particular instrument, now.
Whether is Old English hwæþer, which of two. Discern is Latin discernere, to separate apart, to sift one from the other. Discernment is the whether asked of a single situation. It is not a second question beside the prime one but the prime one, practiced.

THE WORD IS CONTESTED
In the register where it is now most often heard, discernment names an interior faculty. Feel further into it. Notice one's own bias. Widen the perspective. Keep deepening. That version has three properties, and each of them is a tell.
It never finishes. There is always a further subtlety, so no point is reached at which anything follows.
It cannot be checked. Only the one discerning can report on it, which makes it a report on her interior rather than a finding about the situation.
It is addressed to the one who holds. Its promise is that a holder who discerns better will hold better.
A discernment that can never end in an act is how well, conducted inwardly. It assumes the terms and refines the bearing, and it is the form of the word the configuration has a use for.

REAL AT THE MENU, AND CAPTURED THERE
There is a second counterfeit and it is harder to see, because what happens in it is real.
A creature choosing among the options on offer discerns. She compares, weighs and selects, and the selection is genuinely hers. That discernment is later produced as the evidence of her consent: she chose, she evaluated, no one forced her hand. Discernment among the options below the line is real, and it is the record of the capture, because every option on the menu presupposed the answer to the question nobody put.
So discernment has an object, and the object decides everything. Between options, it is how well. Between the two laws, it is whether.

TESTED, NOT DEEPENED
The tradition's own discernment is not private and it does not go on forever. It is tested, and a test reaches a finding.
It is tested in the gathered body. The Friends attended to the Light within, tested in gathered silence and discerned through the body, and what a meeting reached was a sense of the meeting that could be recorded and acted on.
It is tested against a derived instrument. The tests ask one question in twelve positions: what is necessary here for this to be other than a forgery, and is it present. They can be checked without reference to what anyone meant.
And it is tested in the creature's own body, which reads which law is running before any account of it does: the grip that never opens, the fire turned back on its own substrate, the yielding that receives nothing back.
What the three share is that each can be wrong in public, which is exactly the property the interior version is built to lack.

WHAT IT ASKS
What does it generate. Whether anything is transformed, or whether it only accumulates and exhausts what it draws from.
Which register is it at. The soul's, where there is no clock and nothing can be finally taken, or the collective's, where there is a clock and something can be lost. The configuration's favorite move is to answer at one register and have the answer heard at the other.
Can this produce a no. If every answer available to a question is a way of proceeding, the question is below the line.
Is it being posted. Whether the relation is being entered as a balance, with a debit to be met.
Who is being asked to do the work. And whether anything at all is required of the one who holds.
None of these asks what anyone intended, which is why they can be put in a room that does not want them asked.

IT IS COMPLETE WHEN IT CAN BE ACTED ON
Perception that goes nowhere is not yet discernment. It is completed by a finding someone can stand on in public.
A town that finds a use is not wanted within its borders, writes that finding into its zoning, defends it, and has it upheld, has discerned in the full sense: a situation examined, a law identified, a no entered on a record where it holds. Dryden did this with oil and gas extraction, and the Court of Appeals upheld it in 2014. The act is not a consequence added to the discernment afterward but how the discernment is known to have happened.

WHAT IT IS NOT
It is not judgment of a person. Its questions are about what a situation is running, and they make no finding about anyone's worth.
It is not suspicion, which has the answer before it asks and so does not ask.
It is not self-location. Asking where she stands between the two, what stage she has reached, how far she has come, is the primal question, where are you, asked from inside the configuration and turned on herself. It runs the demand for position again at every interval, and knowing the two laws is what makes it fit. Discernment asks what this is running, of the situation, and it requires no coordinate for the one asking.
And it is not a stage to be reached before a creature is permitted to refuse. There is no level of discernment that must be demonstrated first, and no one is owed a report on her readiness. A refusal does not wait on proof that the one refusing has discerned well enough, because that proof is demanded by the party being refused.

Asked once and filed, it becomes one more practice, and a practice becomes something to be good at. Asked in every room, of every offer, it is how then shall we live, and it is the one form of the question the rooms cannot convert, because its answer is not a better way of proceeding. Its answer is which one.
