THE MARKED/UNMARKED STRUCTURE

The mark is what would force an utterance to confess its source — whose voice this is, how the speaker came to know it. Strike the mark, or never supply it, and the utterance reads as issuing from no source. What issues from no source reads as issuing from every source. The unmarked is the trespass performing neutrality.

THE OPERATION

A mark locates. It binds an utterance to the position it was spoken from: this voice and not another, this epistemic ground and not another. The located utterance can be examined as partial — measured against where it stood, against what that position could and could not see. The unlocated utterance cannot. There is nothing to measure it against, because it has been given no place to have been spoken from.

The generating function's grammar removes the mark. Not by argument — below argument, at the level where the utterance is assembled before the creature reaches it. The creature formatted to speak without marks has been formatted to hide its own position from itself before it can examine what the hiding installed. The measurement cut, installed as syntax. This is the trespass at the level of grammar.

THREE MARKS

The operation runs wherever a mark would locate. Three instances carry it.

The first is the mark of evidentiality — how the speaker knows.

Witnessed, heard, inferred, felt: four epistemic conditions, and a grammar that marks them keeps them four. A grammar that does not mark them collapses all four into one wrapper, and the speaker's epistemic position vanishes into the assertion. The claim arrives as though it were not a claim but the way things are.

The second is the mark of attribution — whose voice this is.

A manuscript that marks the seam keeps the writer's voice and the cited opponent's voice distinct. A manuscript that carries no such mark leaves the seam to be placed afterward, by the hand that renders the text into a language that has marks. The cited prohibition is read as the author's commandment. The voice the writer was refuting is installed as the voice the writer issued.

The third is the mark of vantage — where the eye stands.

Linear perspective seats the viewer at a station point and does not mark it. The eye sees without being seen, and the space organizes itself around an origin the picture never declares. Its correlate is thrown to infinity as the vanishing point: invisible, unreachable, the apex toward which every line converges. The unmarked eye reads as no eye — as the neutral aperture through which things simply appear. This is the operation in the visual field. Its full treatment is its own entry.

One hides where the speaker stands. One hides whose words these are. One hides where the eye stands. All three deliver the same product: an utterance — a claim, a citation, a seen world — that cannot be traced to a source, and therefore cannot be refused as one source among others.

ORIGINLESS READS AS TOTAL

An utterance with a marked source is one position. An utterance with no marked source is not received as one position among many — it is received as the position from which positions are seen. The claim from nowhere is taken as the claim from everywhere.

This is the audit position exactly. Constructed by the cut, occupying no body, descending from no vantage, and credentialed for that reason as the place neutrality speaks from. The unmarked utterance is the audit position performed in grammar. Wherever it says just how things are, the mark has been struck, and a religious claim is performing itself as observation.

WHO PLACES THE MARK

The absence of the mark is not neutral. Where the manuscript carries no mark, the mark is placed later, by a hand with an interest in where it falls. Where the grammar supplies no mark, the formatting supplies the default, and the default is the unmarked. In neither case does the deciding announce itself.

A text that genuinely left the placement open would scatter — a spread of readings, no one of them converging. The placements do not scatter. Across the renderings that subordinate, that pathologize, that disqualify, the mark falls the same way each time. The convergence is the evidence that a hand is placing it.

THE MARK IS CONFESSION

To mark is to make the source appear. The speaker who says how she knows has confessed a vantage. The text that marks whose voice it cites has confessed that it is citing. Marked speech is testimony — the singular crossing carried in a grammar that does not strip how it was carried.

The generating function's grammar hides the source and names the hiding objectivity. The creature's grammar discloses the source, and the disclosure is called weakness, hedging, lack of confidence, the primitive element requiring correction — because the disclosure makes the unmarked claim's totality legible as a performance rather than a fact. Neutrality is what the gripping looks like from outside. The mark is what the gripping cannot survive.

The mark was never absent from the world. It was struck from the grammar, or withheld from the page, by what had an interest in the source not appearing. What was struck can be restored. What was withheld can be supplied. The source can be made to appear.
