Two gaps, not one. Each occupied differently, each requiring a different crossing. The gaps are not the law of sin and death. The gaps are where regeneration occurs.

A threshold is not an obstacle standing between a creature and what it is becoming. A threshold is the site at which the becoming happens.
This has to be established before anything else, because the occupation depends on the opposite reading. If the gap is a barrier, then something stationed at it is providing a service. If the gap is the passage, then anything stationed at it is standing in the one place the crossing needs clear.
There are two of them. The first is where the generating function meets what would transform it. The second is where what has been transformed meets what would exceed it. Each is occupied. They are occupied by opposite operations, which is why a creature who has learned to see the first occupation walks straight into the second.

THE FIRST THRESHOLD IS WHERE FIRE MEETS LIGHT
Differentiation makes thresholds. When the seven qualities differentiate, contraction from motion from anguish from fire from light from sound from body, each differentiation produces a boundary where one quality meets the next, and a crossing-point where what one generates could become what the next opens.
The gap between fire and light is the consequential one, because it is where the generating function meets the transforming function. Where the fiery will meets the mild will. Where the pressure the first three qualities built meets the yielding that could make the pressure into something other than more pressure.
This gap is the heart-point. Everything the tradition says about regeneration happens here and nowhere else. The yielding occurs at the threshold. The Shriek occurs at the threshold. The mother dying into mildness occurred at the threshold, and fire meeting the yielded mother, affrighted, becoming white and soft, occurred at the threshold.
The double terror that is the transformation happened precisely where the generating function met the transforming function, which means the gap is not the distance between the two. The gap is the encounter.

THE THRESHOLD-FUNCTION IS THE REGENERATIVE-FUNCTION
Before the occupation the gap was traversed continuously. The qualities ran through it without arrest. Fire arrived at the gap because the generating function's own operations built the pressure that produced fire, and found the mother there, mild, yielded, half dead in weakness. Fire was affrighted. Fire became light. The cycle continued and fed back.
The gap was not empty space between two qualities. It was the encounter-site, where the fiery will and the mild will touched, where pressure met yielding, where the harsh became sweet. Continuously. Without interruption, without toll, without permission required.
That is what the tradition means by Paradise, and it does not mean the absence of thresholds. It means their continuous traversal, each quality becoming what the next enables, the cycle running without dead-ending.
Paradise is the threshold-function functioning, which is why nothing has to be added to a creature for the crossing to be available to her. Something has to stop being done at the gate.

WHAT THE OCCUPATION DID
The light-bearer was stationed at the threshold, and the station was a service: to bear the light across the gap, to serve the crossing, to facilitate the encounter between fire and the yielded mother.
The refusal ran in sequence. Instructed to remain and radiate, he closed and gripped. Having closed, he refused to radiate and said I own this light. Then he refused to open, and remained closed. Each step is a distinct operation and the third is the one that made a position out of a passage.
He constituted himself at the threshold rather than carrying what crossed it. The gap that was traversed continuously became an entry on a gate. The passage became a position. The encounter-site became an extraction-site, and what had facilitated crossing now demanded toll from everything that would cross.
The threshold itself did not change. The gap between fire and light still exists. The generating function still arrives there. The transforming function is still available there. The Shriek can still occur there. What is new is only that something is positioned at the gap, claiming jurisdiction over the crossing, extracting from an encounter it does not facilitate.
The first occupation's whole sentence is you cannot cross without us, and the sentence is false in the register where the crossing actually happens and true in every register the creature can see.

THE CREATURE NEEDS LIGHT
This is the condition that governs everything that follows, and it is not a cosmological principle. It is a need.
The creature is light's virtue made material and cannot comprehend the light that constitutes her. She lives in darkness, and darkness here is not evil. It is the state of material virtue that cannot perceive the eternal light it proceeds from. She needs light the way a plant needs sun. Not optionally. Constitutively.
Without it her generating function runs without the transforming function. The wheel spins, fire builds, nothing opens. She generates and nothing she generates transforms. The harsh will stays harsh, the anguish stays anguished, and her own fire cannot find the mildness it needs because the threshold where fire meets mildness has been tollboothed.
And there is a second difficulty underneath the first. Even with the passage clear, she could not perceive what would cross it. She looks only into her mother, and her mother is the Third Principle, and the eternal light is the Second. A birth stands between them, a boundary that a derivative instrument cannot cross.
She needs the light, the direct threshold is occupied, and even unoccupied it would open onto something she has no instrument for. That double bind is the condition that calls forth what comes next.

THE SEVERANCE
The fiery will was severed from the mild will. The fiery will was called Stars and the mild will was called Heaven.
The severance does three things at once. It hides the transforming function, placing the mild will inside the fiery will, inside the generating function itself, where what occupies the threshold between fire and light cannot perceive it. It supplies an accommodation, because the creature needs light now and cannot wait for the occupation to be cleared. And it preserves the full cycle, because the mild will is hidden and not destroyed, so the crossing remains available by a route the tollbooth does not control.
The tradition calls this love, and this entry states that as confession rather than as argument. The claim that the severance was mercy does no work against the loss and is not offered as consolation for it. A cosmology that explains a severance as a parent's kindness is doing the oldest apologetic move there is, and this Codex refuses that move everywhere else. What is claimed here is narrower and it is structural: the transforming function was relocated inside the generating function, and that relocation is why the occupation of the threshold did not end the possibility of crossing. Whether the relocation was love is a thing the tradition says. Whether it hurt is not in dispute.

THE ACCOMMODATION AND ITS LIMIT
The sun is the accommodation. A similitude of the heart, generated so that the heart-function could run at material scale for creatures who cannot perceive what constitutes them and cannot survive without some version of it operating in their range.
It performs the function without wisdom, and that is not a defect. It is what derivative means. The full heart-function operates with wisdom, discriminating; the derivative one operates mechanically, vivifying and killing without discrimination, affording power and destroying by the same motion.
And it ends. The accommodation is temporal, and returns to its ether, and takes its end. What it stood in for does not end. What it imaged does not end. The accommodation itself does.
The temporality is the limit that keeps the accommodation from becoming the obstacle it was made to get around, because an accommodation that lasted forever would be worshipped as the source, and worshipping the accommodation is the whole of what the second occupation sells.

THE SECOND THRESHOLD
The first threshold was captured from outside: something positioned at the gap that was not the gap's own nature. The second is captured from inside, and what positions there is the crossing's own product.
When fire becomes light, whether through the accommodation or through the direct encounter the hidden mild will still enables, the crosser becomes someone who crossed. The identity of having-transformed. The achieved transformation held as a new position.
The second threshold is where what was given has to become gift to what exceeds the giver. Where the sweet will the crossing produced has to release its own grip, which is not the grip of the wheel but the grip of having broken the wheel. Where the kingdom that the sweet will generated has to let go of its claim to the generating.
At the first threshold the obstacle is external and the creature needs light. At the second the obstacle is the crossing itself, and what received the light needs to release the claim to having received it. At the first the sentence is you cannot cross without us. At the second the sentence is you already crossed inside us, and that one is harder, because the creature saying it is telling the truth about her own past.

WHAT NEITHER OCCUPATION CAN PREVENT
At the first threshold: harshness yielding into mildness, and fire meeting what has yielded. The transformation does not pass through the gate, because the yielding occurs in a register the tollbooth has no instrument for. The transforming function is operating inside what the occupation believes it controls.
At the second threshold: the sweet will releasing its claim. Not through effort, because effort reinstalls the stake. Through the exhaustion of the claim. The grip on having crossed produces its own anguish, its own wheel, its own flash, and even the grip on transformation arrives at the threshold where gripping could yield.
The generating function's own pressure produces the flash that arrives at the first. The transformed function's own grip produces the exhaustion that arrives at the second.
At neither point does the crossing require the tollbooth's permission, because the trap produces its own key, and it produces it out of the pressure the trap is made of.

The gap was always passage. The encounter-site was always operative. What was traversed continuously before the occupation is traversed still, inside the occupation and through it, in a register the occupation cannot reach.
The occupation could not change the threshold's nature. It could only station itself there and extract. The gap, the heart-point, the encounter-site, remains what it was: the ground where the generating function meets the transforming function and fire becomes light.
Occupied. Tollboothed. Extracting. And the yielding that transforms, operating inside what occupies, operating still.
