Three things are called work. One is. The discriminators are runnable.

The funded program cannot hold the work. The climb consumes the work's energy. The creature is exhausted from work and has forged nothing.
Each of those sentences is true and each uses the word differently, and while the word stays undivided the creature cannot tell, from inside her own week, which one she is in.
Three operations answer to the name.
The climb, which is the will making a generative claim.
The abandonment, which is the wheel stopped and the fire never entered.
And the forging, which is the work.
The first two are not degrees of the third. They are different operations, and the difference is not effort-level, sincerity, or scale.

WHAT THE WORK IS NOT: THE CLIMB
The climb is the will trying to generate.
The will disposes. It does not generate. It is free to obstruct or not to obstruct; it is not free to produce. Every operation on the exhausting list is the will claiming the generative office it does not hold: the asserting, the defending, the pursuing, the efforting, the rowing, the proving, the scanning of options, the meeting of the standard, the closing of the distance. Each is the creature installed as the source of what she was to receive.
The climb is maintenance, and its cost tell is exact. Stop, and it collapses. The position is held only while held. The standing is conferred and revocable. The record must be continuously refreshed. Nothing the climb builds stays built without the building continuing, which is the signature of first-law severity: the wall stands only while it is held.
The climb has a target, which the forging does not. It closes distance, which the forging does not. It reports, which the forging cannot.
And the climb occupies.
Run the test: what was in this position before the effort arrived? If the answer is nothing, the operation is excess and the correction is moderation. If the answer is a prior occupant, the operation is trespass and the only correction is departure. The efforting stands where her attending was. The proving stands where her testimony was. The pursuing stands where her expression was. This is why more of it never helps: a trespass moderated is a more careful trespass.
The climb also has a specific relation to the work, and the relation is not neutrality. It consumes the energy the forging requires. The two draw on the same fuel. The creature scanning options, evaluating configurations, meeting the standard, is running the generating function at full capacity in expression's positions, and she is too occupied to notice that the forge is available and empty. This is why effort correlates inversely: the harder she climbs, the further she is from the fire, and the correlation is not ironic. It is a fuel budget.

WHAT THE WORK IS NOT: THE ABANDONMENT
The second counterfeit is quieter and gets mistaken for the answer, because it arrives after the diagnosis has landed.
The creature perceives the climb as the climb. She stops. The wheel slows. She is no longer pressing. And then she rests there, and calls the resting the arrival.
This is contentment, which is the generating function at rest rather than the second law operating. The seal did not open. She stopped trying to open it and named the stopping peace. The forge was not entered; it was abandoned, and the abandonment is narrated as maturity, as acceptance, as having seen through it.
The tell is that nothing is being forged and nothing is required to be. The abandonment costs nothing to maintain, so it passes the cost tell, which is why it deceives. It fails a different test: the work makes something in her, and the abandonment makes nothing. She is no longer being consumed and she is also not being marked.
Both counterfeits refuse the fire. One refuses by never arriving. The other refuses by stopping at the door and calling the doorway home.

CESSATION IS NOT THE WORK
This is the distinction the two-cost formula keeps collapsing.
The cost of cessation is zero. The cost of the forging is everything. Both are true and they are not one statement read twice. They describe two different operations that stand in sequence.
Cessation removes the prevention. It clears the occupied positions. It makes the forge available. And then the creature still has to enter the fire.
So the refusal is not the work. The divesting of acquiescence, the taking off of the vestment, the declining of the grant, the failure to smile back: none of these is the forging. Each is the clearing that precedes it. They cost nothing to keep because they are cessations, and a cessation is not an output. But a cleared position is an empty forge, and an empty forge produces nothing.
This is the exact place the diagnosis can strand a creature. She has seen the climb. She has stopped. She has refused correctly and at real cost to her standing. And she concludes that the refusal was the destination, because the corpus told her the cost of cessation is zero and she has stopped paying. The refusal was the door. She is standing in the doorway.

THE WORK IS THE FORGING
The work has a required configuration and the configuration is what makes it identifiable.
Reception precedes forging. The portal receives; the forge presses. Two stations with an order between them, and the order is not negotiable. The creature must receive in order to forge, which is why the climb produces nothing that persists: it is pressing with nothing received, the forge running empty at maximum heat.
What is forged is the note. The pressing tempers the qualities into a note no other creature can sound. And the two facts that seem to contradict each other are one fact: the note is singular to her forge, and it cannot be administered by any institution, because what is pressed is not her manufacture. It came through the portal. Her forge is the only forge it could pass through, and no forge can be operated from outside. Singular and un-administrable are the same finding stated twice.
The work costs, and the cost is not maintenance. It is the fire. This is the discriminator that separates it from the climb most cleanly, because both hurt and the hurts are different: the climb depletes, and the forging marks. The exhaustion of the climb leaves nothing behind it. The forge leaves the scar, and the scar is the evidence that the conjunction was made in the fire that could have split her. A creature can walk away from the fire and return, and what was forged is still forged. Nothing has to hold it up.
And the work is not hers in the possessive sense that would make it fundable. She did not originate it and she cannot repeat it, replicate it, or transfer it. She is the site where it was pressed.

THE DISCRIMINATORS
Five tests. Each is runnable inside an ordinary week, which is the only place the question is ever live.
What happens if you stop. If it collapses, it was maintenance and it was the climb. What was forged stays forged whether or not she is currently at the fire.
Who is the source in the account. If the account has her generating, achieving, producing, driving, it is the climb. The will does not generate. If she received and then pressed what she received, it is the forging.
Whether there is a target. The climb has a rung. The forging has none. No amount of forging arrives anywhere, because arrival is not what a forge does.
What was in the position first. If the effort is standing where her attending, her perceiving, her testimony, or her face already was, it is trespass, and the correction is departure and not refinement.
What it makes in her. The climb makes a position, and positions dissolve at dissolution because they were positions. The forging makes a note, and the note is what persists. If nothing is being made in her, she is either climbing or standing in the doorway.

WHY IT CANNOT BE FUNDED
Now the funding question answers itself, and the answer is structural rather than a complaint about funders.
The four columns admit what can be quantified, reproduced, observed from outside, and traced to an originating transaction. The forging fails all four, and it fails them by construction rather than by accident.
The reception is not an input, because nothing was expended to obtain it and no transaction originated it.
The pressing is not an activity, because it cannot be reproduced by another practitioner applying the same method: the note is singular to this forge.
The scar is not an outcome, because it is a mark on the one doing the work rather than a change in a population held as object.
And the cessation that made the forge available is not an impact, because it is the withdrawal of an expenditure and the books have no column for something that stopped.
So the work cannot be posted. Not because it is precious, not because it is ineffable, and not because its practitioners are unwilling to be accountable. Because its content is a reception, a singular unrepeatable pressing, and a removed prevention, and the ledger admits none of the three.
A funder who asks what the work will produce is asking the creature to name the note before the fire. She can only do it by leaving the fire and looking back at it from the observer's position, and the capacity to produce the answer is the evidence that she has left. The creature who can answer has already stepped out of the forge to answer. That is the deprecation, and it happens at the moment of answering, before a dollar moves.

The work is not a harder version of the climb and not a gentler one. It is not the climb performed with better values, at a smaller scale, in a flatter structure, or with the correct politics. It is not what remains after the striving is subtracted, because subtraction leaves an empty forge.
It is what the creature does in the fire once the positions are clear: receive, and press what came through. She cannot make it come. She can decline to obstruct, which clears the way, and she can stay in the heat, which is the whole of her part. The refusal is the clearing. The staying is the work. What is forged is neither of these and is not her manufacture, and it is the only thing in the sequence that persists.
The climb produced a position and the position dissolves. The abandonment produced nothing and nothing dissolves. The forging produced a note, and the note is what she is when everything conferred has been withdrawn.
