The first of the three names, at the register of origin. Its whole finding is that nothing arrives uncaused and the cause is a body. Made has a maker standing outside it and a specification decided in advance. Begotten has neither.

THE FIRST OF THE THREE
Conducting passes through. Going forth issues out. Begetting brings into being what was not, from a body, without a specification.
That is the distinction the three names hold and it is not a matter of emphasis. A conducting requires a current that already exists. A going forth requires an enclosure to go out of. A begetting requires neither, and produces something that did not obtain before, and the producing is done by a body rather than by a will.
And what it establishes is a negative that the configuration cannot afford: no creature is the origin of itself.

BEGOTTEN, NOT MADE
The formula is from the creed and it was written to hold a line under pressure.
Gennethenta, ou poiethenta. Begotten, not made. The Arian position was that the Son was a creature, made, the first and highest of the things brought into being. The formula refuses it, and in refusing it the tradition had to say what the difference between the two words actually is.
A making has a maker who stands outside the thing made. The maker is not altered by it, is not of the same substance as it, and remains complete whether the thing is made or not.
A making has a specification. The output is decided before the material arrives, which is what makes a making checkable: it can be inspected against the plan and found to conform or not.
A begetting has neither. The begetter is not outside. The begotten is of the same substance, which is what homoousios was fought over for a century. And there is no specification, because a begetting produces what it produces and the begetter does not set the output.
Which places the two words exactly where the work already has them. A specification decided before the material arrives is a die. A relation in which the output cannot be set in advance is a forge. Taylor's shop makes. A body begets.

MADE, NOT BEGOTTEN
The self-made man reverses the formula precisely, and the reversal is the claim.
He claims the single predicate the tradition reserved to God and guarded even there. Uncaused, self-originate, from nothing prior. And he claims it in the made form rather than the begotten form, which means he is claiming to be the manufactured product of a manufacturer who is himself, standing outside himself, working to his own specification.
The claim only parses because the grammar was prepared for it: a language that had already stripped its relational markers and perfected the sentence in which things occur and nobody does them.
CASTLE THEOLOGY carries the accounting and the birth certificate. What belongs here is only the structural point. Every deletion the phrase performs is a deletion of a begetting, and the begetting deleted is always the same one.

THE ENGLISH VERB IS AN ACQUISITION VERB
Here is the thing the English will not tell you about itself.
Beget is be- plus get. Old English begietan: to get, to obtain, to acquire. The procreative sense is a specialisation of an acquiring sense, and the acquiring sense is the older one. In English, to beget is at root to obtain.
Now the Hebrew, which is doing something entirely different with the same act.
The verb is yalad, to bear, to bring forth. In its plain form it is what the mother does: she bore. The form used of the father in the genealogies is the causative. Holid: he caused a bearing.
So in Hebrew the father's begetting is grammatically derived from the mother's bearing. His act is a causative of hers. Her act is the root and his is the conjugation. The language cannot say what he did without conjugating what she did.
And the English replaced a causative of her act with an acquisition of his. Begat enters the genealogies as a getting, the mother disappears from the verb entirely, and a reader of the English cannot recover from the surface of the text that the Hebrew form is built on her.
That is a translation corruption at the exact seam where the reading would have run against the configuration, and it is doing its work in the most-recited passage in the book.

THE GENEALOGIES ARE A TRANSMISSION RECORD
Begat, begat, begat. The lists are read as tedium and skipped, and they are the most structurally load-bearing prose in the tradition.
A genealogy is the record that a line was not cut. It has one job: to show a holder at every link. It is not interested in what anyone accomplished and does not evaluate the persons named. It establishes only that each of them arrived from a body, in relation, caused.
Which makes it the standing refutation of self-origination, kept in the form of a list, maintained for centuries by people who could have kept something more flattering instead.
And Luke's runs backward and does not terminate in a making. It runs up through the fathers to Adam, which was the son of God, so the whole chain ends in a begetting and not in a manufacture. The tradition had the option of grounding the human line in a fabrication and declined it.
Matthew's does something else that the respectable version of the account would have removed. In a list otherwise entirely of men, it names Tamar, Rahab, Ruth, and the wife of Uriah. Each of the four sits at a point where the line ran through exactly the irregularity a clean genealogy is kept in order to conceal. The record admits what the establishment would strike, which is what a record kept for transmission does and what a record kept for reputation does not.

THE LEDGER CANNOT POST A BEGETTING
The same structural finding arrives here from the origin side.
A ledger entry requires a transfer between named parties at a stated time for stated consideration. A begetting has none of those. It has no invoice, no counterparty, no delivery date, and no price, and the production it names is not an event but decades: the bearing, the feeding, the waking at night, the daily remaking of the body that eventually reports for work.
So the entire cost of producing a person sits outside the books, and it does not sit there because anyone concealed it. It sits there because it has no entry form.
And then the accounting closes the loop. An asset entered with no recorded cost basis reads on the books as having cost nothing, and a thing that cost nothing is a thing nobody is owed for, and the column that carried the actual cost is hers.
The phrase does not lie about the books. The books are accurate. The falsehood is in the instrument, which cannot record a begetting and therefore records that none occurred.

WHAT THE THIRD FORCE LOOKS LIKE AT THIS REGISTER
Reconciling and neutralizing are offices, and an office needs two parties named in advance so that a third can stand between them. Begetting names no such position. There is nothing between. There is a body, and what comes from it, and a relation that did not exist and now does.
And it cannot be made to reconcile anything, because it does not operate on a pair. It operates on nothing and issues something, which is the one thing the configuration has no procedure for, since every procedure it holds begins with an inventory of what is already there.
No creature is the origin of itself. The walls were the argument otherwise. Men are begat.

The tradition guarded one predicate and it guarded it in a single clause of a creed, against a bishop who had a considerable following and a coherent argument. Begotten, not made. The line held for seventeen centuries and then a senator on a floor in 1832 reversed it in two words to praise manufacturers whose works ran on people they owned, and nobody objected, because by then the grammar could carry it and the books had no column that would have flagged it.
