The pre-Light sequence, the birthplace of Fire, and the Soul's origin. What operates before Light kindles, and what Light kindles out of rather than despite.

WHAT THE FOUR ARE
They are the operations that occur before Light kindles: the generating that produces what Light will transform if Light kindles, and what torment will perpetuate if it does not.
First, Harshness, which attracts and shuts up and makes Darkness and sharp Cold. Contraction, the sour Matrix, the Mother of all, drawing inward and making what can be held. And the Tartness cannot endure the attracting, so the very operation creates what it cannot sustain.
Second, Bitterness. The attracting in the Cold makes a Sting which rages and resists against the hard Death, and it is motion born from the unbearable pressure of the first rather than separately created. The Sting fights the Cold and cannot leave it, because Bitterness arises within Harshness, which is its Mother and the place it stands. It flies upward and sideways and finds no rest.
Third, Anguish. The Birth of the Harshness falls into an aching horrible Essence, rough and stinging in itself, like a whirling Wheel. The Rad der Angst: the hardness fixed and the motion fugitive, one centripetal and the other centrifugal, and because they are one and cannot separate they turn together and arrive nowhere.
Fourth, Fire. From the friction of the Wheel, the lightning-flash that erupts from the grinding of incompatibles, facing two directions: backward into the Wheel, or forward into what the grinding prepared and could not produce.

THEY ARE THE GENERATING AND NOT A DEFECT
Without Harshness nothing could be held. Without Bitterness nothing could move. Without Anguish there would be no pressure sufficient to produce the flash. Without Fire no kindling could occur.
Together they are the dark fire, which is what the first Principle is: an Anxiety generating in itself and gnawing in it and yet consuming nothing, neither multiplying nor lessening.
And without the Light of God the first Principle cannot be otherwise, neither can it change or alter itself. The hardening cannot soften itself, the Hunger cannot fill itself, the Bitterness cannot sweeten itself, and the Fire cannot enlighten itself. The Wheel turns and the turning cannot open the Wheel.
Yet the Light is kindled out of them, and not despite them. The anguish that cannot resolve itself produces the intensity from which resolution becomes possible, not by anything arriving from outside the Wheel's substance but through the Wheel's own extremity: the Bitterness flies up very swiftly, and from thence proceeds a twinkling Flash.

THE SEQUENCE FAILS IN THREE PLACES AND NOT TWO
The account usually stops at a single question, whether Harshness yields when the flash arrives, and that question has two answers and there are three failures.
Harshness never softening is the first. Fire meets hardness, hardness holds, no Light kindles because there is no soft Mother for the flash to find. This is sourness death and it leaves the war body.
Fire turning back into its own fuel is the second. It consumes the creature's own substrate instead of moving towards a softened Mother, and the flash never terrifies anything because it is not travelling towards her. This is fire death and it leaves the stone body.
And the grip opening onto nothing is the third, and it is the one a two-answer account cannot see. The Mother softens, the field forms, the yielding is real, and no flash arrives in it. This is water death and it leaves the sodden body.
Set the first beside the third and the relation appears. They are the same Quality arrested on either side of one event, the grip opening, which is why they present as opposites and take opposite medicines. Water given to the grip bloats it without entering the hardness. Fire is what the opened field was waiting for.

THE SOUL COMES FROM BEFORE THE KINDLING
The Soul was breathed into Man out of the original Birth of the Father, and that Birth is before the Light of Life.
So the Soul does not need to reach the fire-Light threshold. It comes from the fire-Light threshold. It is fire-nature, it is what kindles, and it carries the kindling-place as its own substance. Regeneration does not give the Soul what it lacks. It shows the Soul what it always was.
And the same origin carries the other outcome. The Soul's Essences contain the most exceeding horrible irksome Source, in the Root, before the creature arrives. The four operating in the Soul's own constitution produce, without Light, everything that constitutes devil-nature: enmity in itself, will striving against God, climbing Pride in Fire.
Same Soul, same four, same standing. A Soul with Light is humble and meek and bears crosses. A Soul without Light is identical to devils in Essences, Form and Quality, and the difference between the two is singular.

EVERYTHING TURNS AT THE FOURTH
The first three prepare and the fourth decides, because the Wheel alone produces nothing new and turns forever without arrival.
Fire held stays at the pivot: not forcing through to the fifth, not collapsing back into the third, keeping open the place where kindling might occur. This is the interval where the generating exhausts and its own map reaches its limit, and it is not a gap requiring importation. It is the place where pushing stops being sufficient and yielding is the only thing that opens.
Fire backward adds energy to the rotation instead of terrifying Harshness into softening, and this is the backwards firing: the generating function pushing through the pivot into what would be expression's territory and occupying those positions with its own substance, so that possessiveness fills love's position and doctrine fills voice's and property fills body's. Lucifer took offense at the light and entered into the fierce might of the fire, for he would domineer, and he continued in the four Anguishes of the Original: stuck at the fourth, in a Fire that never becomes Light.
Fire forward finds the Mother soft. The flash has terrified her, she sinks back as if dead and overcome, and the Fire, finding her overcome, is more terrified than she was and becomes in the twinkling of an eye white and clear. The Wheel does not accelerate into Light. The Wheel stops gripping, and the qualities that were generating torment through their incompatibility stand in a different relation because the grip released rather than because anything new arrived.

THE WORD ENTERED THE FOUR
Not from outside, but by becoming what the four produce: a human Soul, taking on fire-nature and the dark Mind and the Ground where the Soul has its Original.
And it broke in pieces the dark Gate in the Ground of the Soul, and the Chains of the Devil. The breaking occurred inside the four, at the level where the Wheel turns, and did there what the four cannot do to themselves, which is open the fourth.
The four still operate and the Wheel still turns and the Essences still contain what they contained. But the Gate that held the configuration locked is broken, and the Wheel continues by momentum rather than by a lock.
Which is why the creature cannot go around them. She cannot spiritualize past the Harshness or pretend the Bitterness is not bitter or the Fire not burning, because the four are her constitution at the first Principle and are what her Soul was breathed from.

The prevention works by filling the Essences so that the Soul does not meet the four directly, because in the meeting she would find that the Gate was already broken.
And she would find the other thing, which is that Harshness, when the flash arrives and she is terrified and sinks back soft, does not die. She becomes the ground in which Light grows.
The four are what the creature was breathed from and the four are where Light kindles, and a creature who meets them without prevention discovers that both sentences name one territory.
