"Which original Birth is before the Light of Life, which is in the four Anguishes, out of which the Light of God is kindled."
I. What the Four Anguishes Are
The four Anguishes are the operations that occur before Light kindles. The mechanism of generation that produces what Light will transform — if Light kindles — or what torment will perpetuate — if Light does not.
In the Original: first, Harshness, which attracts, shuts up, makes Darkness, and sharp Cold. This is Quality One — contraction, the sour Matrix, the Mother of all. Dark. Cold. Drawing inward. Making what can be held. The Tartness cannot endure the Attracting — the very operation of Harshness creates what it cannot sustain. Contraction contracts until contraction itself becomes unbearable.
The Attracting in the Cold makes in the Bitterness a Sting, which rages and resists against the hard Death. This is Quality Two — motion born from the unbearable pressure of contraction. Not separately created. Generated by Harshness's own crisis. The Sting fights the Cold. But Bitterness cannot escape Harshness, being its Mother wherein it stands. Bitterness arises WITHIN Harshness and cannot leave. It flies upwards and sideways, and yet finds no Rest.
Till that the Birth of the Harshness falls into an aching horrible Essence, like a Brimstone-Spirit, very rough, hard, stinging in itself, like a whirling Wheel. This is Quality Three — the Wheel of Anguish, the Rad der Angst. What happens when contraction and motion grind against each other with no exit. The hardness is fixed, the motion is fugitive — one centripetal, the other centrifugal — and as they are one and cannot separate from each other, they become like a turning wheel, having nevertheless no destination where to arrive.
And from the friction of the Wheel: Fire. Quality Four. The pivot. The lightning-flash that erupts from the grinding of incompatibles. Fire faces two directions — backward into the Wheel (feeding more anguish, more contraction, more motion, more grinding) or forward into what the grinding prepared but could not produce (Light, Quality Five, the opening).
These four — Harshness, Bitterness, Anguish, Fire — are the four Anguishes. What operates before Light. What the Soul was breathed from. Where God's Name originates. The original Birth of the Father from which everything begins that can begin.

II. How the Four Anguishes Generate
The four Anguishes are not defects. The four Anguishes are the generating function. Without Harshness, nothing could be held. Without Bitterness, nothing could move. Without Anguish, there would be no pressure sufficient to produce the flash. Without Fire, no kindling could occur.
The four Anguishes generate the dark fire — what the First Principle IS. God's original Fierceness. An Anxiety, generating in itself, and gnawing in it, and yet consuming nothing, neither multiplying nor lessening. The eternal Worm. Generating from eternity. Never created. Never ending.
Without the Light of God, the First Principle cannot be otherwise, neither can it change or alter itself, for it has been so from Eternity. The hardening cannot soften itself. The Hunger cannot fill itself. The Bitterness cannot sweeten itself. The Fire cannot enlighten itself. This is the structural incapacity of the generating function — it generates endlessly, but what it generates cannot transform its own generating. First Principle operations cannot produce Second Principle effects. The Wheel turns but the turning cannot open the Wheel.
And yet the four Anguishes are where Light kindles FROM. The Light of God is kindled out of the four Anguishes. Not despite them. FROM them. The anguish that cannot resolve itself produces the intensity from which resolution becomes possible — not through any intervention from outside the Wheel's own substance, but through the Wheel's own extremity. The Bitterness flies up very swiftly, from whence proceeds a twinkling Flash. The flash is not imported. The flash erupts from Bitterness at maximum intensity within the grinding itself.
What the flash produces depends on what it finds. If it finds the Mother still hard — Harshness unyielded — Fire feeds the Wheel. Gate of Hell. If it finds the Mother soft — Harshness terrified by the flash into releasing her grip — Fire becomes Light. And so when the Flash of Fire comes into its Mother, the Harshness, and finds her thus soft and overcome, then it is much more terrified than the Harshness, and becomes in the Twinkling of an Eye white and clear. The kindling. The opening.
The four Anguishes are simultaneously the mechanism of Hell and the birthplace of Heaven. Same operations. Same qualities. Same eternal generating. The difference: whether Harshness yields when the flash arrives.

III. The Four Anguishes and the Soul
The Soul was breathed into Man merely out of the original Birth of the Father by the moving Spirit. The original Birth is before the Light of Life, which is in the four Anguishes, out of which the Light of God is kindled. Wherein is the Original of the Name of God.
The Soul comes from BEFORE the kindling. From the Fire-source itself. From the four Anguishes that produce what Light transforms. The Soul IS God's own Essence — not because the Soul is Light but because the Soul comes from where Light kindles from. The Soul IS Fire-nature. The Soul IS what-kindles. The Soul carries the kindling-place as its own substance.
The Soul does not need to ACCESS the fire-Light threshold. The Soul comes FROM the fire-Light threshold. The Soul does not need Oil imported. The Soul IS the very substance that becomes Oil when Fire opens. Regeneration does not GIVE the Soul what it lacks. Regeneration reveals to the Soul what it always was: Fire-substance from before Light, carrying kindling-capacity inherently, made of what-transforms.
And: the Soul's Essences contain the most exceeding horrible enemicitious irksome Source. In the Root. Before the creature arrives. The Essences infected with the Poison of the Devil and of Hell. The four Anguishes operating in the Soul's own constitution produce — without Light — everything that constitutes devil-nature. Enmity in itself. Will striving against God. Desires nothing pleasant or good. Climbing Pride in Fire. Wrath against all.
Same Soul. Same four Anguishes. Same First Principle standing. The difference: singular. Light shining or extinguished. Soul with Light: humble, meek, courteous, cheerful, readily bears crosses, places confidence in Heart of God. Soul without Light: identical to devils in Essences, Form, and Quality. The four Anguishes produce either condition — depending on Light alone.

IV. What Happens at the Fourth Anguish
Fire is the hinge. Everything turns on Quality Four. The first three Anguishes produce the pressure, the motion, the grinding — but the third quality alone produces nothing new. The Wheel turns forever without arrival. What arrives — what could arrive — arrives at Fire.
Fire held remains at the pivot. Does not force through to Quality Five. Does not collapse back into Quality Three. Maintains the opening through which the kindling might occur. Fire held is the Mi-Fa interval — the seam where the generating function exhausts, where the map of the first three qualities reaches its own limit. Not a gap requiring importation from outside. The place where pushing ceases to be sufficient and yielding becomes the only thing that opens.
Fire backward feeds the Wheel. Instead of the flash terrifying Harshness into softening, Fire adds energy to the rotation. Intensifies the anguish. Makes the Wheel burn hotter while opening nothing. This IS the backwards firing — the generating function pushing through the pivot into what would be expression's territory, occupying those positions with its own substance: possessiveness filling love's position, doctrine filling voice's position, property filling body's position. Lucifer took offense at the light, the humility of God, and entered into the fierce might of the fire, for he would domineer. Fire backward is the refusal to yield — insisting on sourcing, attempting to occupy God's position through intensity rather than receiving God's nature through opening. He continued in the four Anguishes of the Original — stuck at Four, the Fire that never becomes Light.
Fire forward — when it occurs — finds Mother soft. The flash has terrified Harshness. Harshness sinks back, as if dead and overcome. Bitterness, finding the Mother overcome, is much more terrified than the Harshness and becomes in the Twinkling of an Eye white and clear. The Wheel does not accelerate into Light. The Wheel stops gripping. The qualities that were generating torment through their incompatibility suddenly stand in a different relation — not because a new element arrived, but because the grip released. Yielding. The generating function ceasing to push. The cessation is what opens the Fourth, and from this opening: Love, Sound, Body — the Second Principle erupting through the opened pivot.
The four Anguishes are not four equal operations. The first three prepare. The fourth decides. Everything the first three produce — all the pressure, all the motion, all the grinding — arrives at the Fourth and meets its hinge. The Fourth is where the Soul was created. The Fourth is where the devil was formed. The Fourth is where the Word entered. The Fourth is where the Gate was broken.

V. The Four Anguishes and the Breaking
The Word entered the four Anguishes.
Became a human Soul — took on the Fire-nature, the dark Mind, the Ground of Hell where the Soul has its Original. Entered the four Anguishes not from outside but BY BECOMING what the four Anguishes produce. And broke in Pieces the dark Gate in the Ground of the Soul, and the Chains of the Devil.
The breaking occurred IN the four Anguishes. At the level where the Wheel turns, where Fire faces its two directions, where the Soul's Original stands in the First Principle of the indissoluble Band. The Word entered this territory — entered Harshness, entered Bitterness, entered Anguish, entered Fire — and did there what the four Anguishes cannot do to themselves: opened the Fourth. Introduced Light where Light was structurally inaccessible. Broke the configuration that held Fire turning backward.
The breaking is eternal. The four Anguishes still operate. The Wheel still turns. The Essences still contain what they contained. But the Gate that held the configuration locked — the dark Gate in the Ground — this is broken. The Chains that held Fire facing backward — the Chains in the Essences — these are broken. The four Anguishes now operate in territory where the breaking has occurred. The Wheel continues by momentum, but the lock is broken, and what would stop the Wheel has access it did not have before.
The four Anguishes remain where the Soul has its Original. The creature cannot bypass them. Cannot spiritualize around them. Cannot pretend the Harshness is not harsh, the Bitterness not bitter, the Anguish not anguishing, the Fire not burning. The four Anguishes are the creature's constitution — what the Soul was breathed from, what the creature IS at First Principle level.
But in the four Anguishes, the Gate is broken. In the four Anguishes, the Chains no longer hold. In the four Anguishes, the Word sticks in the Center, waiting. The Kingdom of Heaven is near in everyone's Mind, and they can attain it, if they will themselves; for God has bestowed it to everyone, out of Grace. The same territory that produces torment when Light does not shine — this territory now carries the breaking. The anguish is real. The exit is also real. Both in the same Ground. Both operating before the creature arrives to choose.
The silence where the four Anguishes operate — the silence beneath the noise of prevention — this silence contains both the anguish and the cure. Prevention fills the Essences to keep the Soul from encountering the four Anguishes directly. Because in the encounter, the creature would discover: the Gate was already broken. The Fire can open. The Light can kindle. And Harshness — the Mother, the Matrix, the Cause of all Things — when the flash arrives and she is terrified and sinks back soft, she does not die. She becomes the ground in which Light grows.
The four Anguishes are what the creature was breathed from. The four Anguishes are where Light kindles. The creature that encounters the four Anguishes without prevention discovers that both statements name the same territory.
