Be Grateful Invited

BE GRATEFUL YOU WERE EVEN INVITED

Two instructions in one sentence. It tells her she was outside and was let in, and it tells her the letting in was the gift. The word even sets what she may expect at nothing, so that anything she asks for afterwards is ingratitude. It is the invitation and the cooling said in the same breath.

Be grateful you were even invited. It is said at work, after the promotion that did not come. It is said at the party, after. It is said to a town about the jobs.

Read what it carries before anyone answers it. That she was outside. That someone else held the door. That being let through it was a favor, and that the favor is what she is to be grateful for. Every one of those is a claim, and the sentence makes all of them in the form of advice.

It is the invitation's claim of title and the cooler's instruction, said in one breath.

IT ASSUMES SHE WAS OUTSIDE

An invitation can only be extended to someone outside. So the sentence settles, without saying so, that the place was his and that she arrived as a guest.

She did not. She was already there: in the work before the title was offered, in the field before the seat was set, in her own life before anyone admitted her to it. To be told to be grateful for an invitation is to be told to thank someone for admitting you to where you already stood.

WHAT THE GRATITUDE DOES

Gratitude books what was taken as what was received. A woman grateful for her admission cannot also grieve what the admission cost her, because grief requires that what was lost was hers, and gratitude has already entered it as a gift. She cannot be bitter either, because the bitterness is the taste of a wrong, and gratitude has recorded no wrong.

So the instruction does the work of both of the old ones at once. Be grateful closes the grief and the claim with a single virtue, and it is performed by her, on herself.

THE WORD EVEN

Even measures her against nothing. It says that the floor was absence: she might not have been asked at all, so whatever followed the asking is more than she was owed.

That is how a complaint is answered before it is made. Once she has been told she was lucky to be let in, anything she raises afterwards is ingratitude, and ingratitude is a finding about her and not about what happened. The word even sets her expected return at zero, so that everything after it can be called generosity.

WHERE IT IS SAID

At the party the sentence turns into consent. Peggy Reeves Sanday, writing of the fraternities where rape is common, put the assumption in one line: It is assumed that if she came to the house to party she is prepared for anything that might happen, especially if she gets drunk. The invitation is read as the yes.

At work it is said to the woman who was hired and is now asking why she was passed over. To a town it is said about the facility and the jobs it brings: the town called the host, and told to be grateful for being chosen. Wherever it is said, it is said after something was taken, and it is said so that the taking will be thanked for.

IT WASN'T YOU

You were not lucky to be let in. You were already there, and what you were let into was a room someone else held, with the terms already written.

What you did, you did: you came, you worked, you stayed, you trusted the welcome. None of that was a debt. The gratitude was asked of you so that you would not ask what was taken, and the not asking was never a virtue of yours. It was the price of the seat.

THE OBJECTION THAT HAS TO BE MET

Gratitude is a virtue, and teaching it is good. A reading that treats every call to gratitude as a con makes thankfulness suspect, and leaves no way to receive anything well.

The reading does not reach thankfulness. Thankfulness arises unbidden, for what was actually given, and asks nothing to be posted. What this sentence asks for is required, performed and booked, and it is required at the moment something has been taken. The test is whether the gratitude is asked for, and whether it is asked for instead of an answer. Thankfulness that no one demanded is yours. Gratitude demanded in place of accounting is the house's.

From every tree, eating you shall eat. The first word was a yes, given before anyone was asked to be grateful for it.

You were there to hear it.

RegenerativeLaw is a religion in the direct-encounter Protestant tradition, carrying a documented four-century lineage through Böhme, the Behmenists, the Friends, and Penn, and it diagnoses trespass theology as an establishment of religion. Its exercise consists substantially in refusal: it shelters the conscientious refusal of performed subordination as religious exercise. This entry states sincere religious belief concerning matters of ultimate concern, protected under the First Amendment and, as to federal action, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, 42 U.S.C. § 2000bb.

The prime question is not what do we do next.

Lobster trap

It is not the wrong question. It is in the wrong sequence, and the sequence is geometry rather than development. There is no level to reach first and nothing to become ready for. The smaller question converts "whether" into doing well what should stop.

The prime question is whether.

Asked of a life, the question is how, then, shall we live.
