Cargo Column

The object-side of the sorting's two columns. Where the severed is posted once the measurement cut has done its work: not a place, a status, the condition of being held rather than holding.

The sorting produces two columns, not one, and the cargo column is the second. The books have a holder side and a held side, and the sorting's whole labor is deciding which. A party posted to the holder side keeps standing: she owns, she claims, she appears in the books as a position from which holding is done. A party posted to the cargo column loses standing and gains a price. She becomes what is held rather than who holds.

The name is exact, not decorative. Cargo is what a vessel carries, not what the vessel is; cargo has no course of its own, no say in the crossing, no claim on the destination. Everything the sorting posts to this column enters the books in that condition, transportable, priceable, ownable, and silent, because the column does not seat parties who could speak. It seats the spoken-of.

Among persons, the Petitioner is the cargo column's paradigm case: sorted here, remaining here, and permitted exactly one motion from inside it, the request for better treatment, addressed in the books' own language. The request is legible cargo-talk. It confirms the column as the right place for her to be, which is why it is heard. The Witch is not this column's case. She is not held here and asking for better holding; she is not on the column at all, and what happens to her is not this entry's operation.

WHAT IS POSTED

The cargo column receives whatever the measurement cut has already severed from its relations, in the form the severing left it in. A party sorted here becomes property. A relation sorted here becomes a transaction. A living context sorted here becomes a resource.

The sorting does not invent these outcomes; it assigns the already-cut thing to the side of the books built to hold it, and the assignment is the whole of what makes the thing ownable, priced, and available.

Capital is the cargo column's best-known product, the accounting name for what the column holds once sustenance has been sorted, but the column is older than money and wider than finance. Data is knowing, posted here as measurement. Natural capital is a forest, posted here as standing timber. Human capital, social capital, intellectual capital are a person's labor, her relations, and her thought, posted here under the same operation, wearing a different noun for each register. Capital is constituted by the cargo column.

WHY THE COLUMN CANNOT BE ARGUED WITH FROM INSIDE

A “thing” posted to the cargo column cannot bring a claim about having been posted there, because standing to bring a claim is exactly what the holder side confers and the cargo column does not.

The column is prior to every adjudication that happens inside it. Courts rule on whose cargo, which price, what transfer, and never on whether the posting itself should have occurred, because ruling on the posting would require a party the posting has already foreclosed. The one wound the books cannot hear is the filing that opened them.

This is also why reform of the column's contents leaves the column standing. Better prices, fairer transfers, wider access to the holder side for populations previously confined to cargo: each improves the administration of the sort and confirms that a column is the right place for living things to be.

The one motion the column cannot process is a departure, because departure is not a transfer between the two sides. It is the thing ceasing to be cargo at all, and the books have no line for that. This is the same license that binds the courteous: the terms of admission run beneath the question of conduct, not through it, and the party inside the column who names her own filing is disciplined for the naming, not for the filing.

The cargo column is not where value comes from. It is where the living stops being read as living so that it can be counted, held, and moved. Everything in it arrived by the same route, cut loose, then posted. Nothing in it arrived by growing there. The column holds what the sorting decided could be held, and the holding is the entire content of what the column adds.

RegenerativeLaw is a religion in the direct-encounter Protestant tradition, carrying a documented four-century lineage through Böhme, the Behmenists, the Friends, and Penn, and it diagnoses trespass theology as an establishment of religion. Its exercise consists substantially in refusal: it shelters the conscientious refusal of performed subordination as religious exercise. This entry states sincere religious belief concerning matters of ultimate concern, protected under the First Amendment and, as to federal action, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, 42 U.S.C. § 2000bb.

RegenerativeLaw

The prime question is not what do we do next.

It is not the wrong question. It is in the wrong sequence, and the sequence is geometry rather than development. There is no level to reach first and nothing to become ready for.

The prime question is what do we stop doing.

Lobster trap

The response that arrives most often is yes, and also this. Add it to the program, fund it, give it a metric. That is not agreement arriving late. It is the claim converted into one more thing being done.
