Why the numbers get made. Not because they measure, but because a downstream channel requires an input it can process. The emptiness is the utility, and the same civilization preserves what it discards wherever discarding would break its own machinery.

The three operations that produce a metric, and what each removes, are at DISTANCE. This entry takes what happens after the number exists: why it was produced, what adopted it, and what the adoption reveals.
A metric is not generated because someone wished to know something. It is generated because a channel downstream requires an input of a particular shape, and the metric is manufactured to that specification.
Quetelet built his index for populations and said so. The insurance industry adopted it for creatures, not because it measured health, but because it produced a number the pricing channels could receive. Kuznets built a national accounting and published the warning inside the report that delivered it: “the welfare of a nation can scarcely be inferred from a measurement of national income.” Simon Kuznets, National Income, 1929 to 1932, report to the United States Senate, 1934. The warning was read. The metric was adopted. The warning was not.
Set the two cases beside each other. In both of them the number's emptiness was the qualification. What the number could not perceive, the channel did not have to account for.

THE CHANNEL SELECTS THE METRIC
This reverses the ordinary account. The ordinary account says a measure is proposed, tested against reality, and adopted if it holds. What the record shows is a channel already built, requiring a scalar, and selecting whichever candidate delivers one.
Mortgage approval requires a number. Rental screening requires a number. Employment screening, insurance pricing, admissions, sentencing, credit allocation: each was built to receive what the eliminations produce, and none was built to receive what the eliminations removed.
So a metric that preserved quality, testimony, participation and attraction would not be a better metric. It would be unusable, because there is no channel with an intake shaped for it.
Which means the sorting requires the elimination. The elimination is not the cost of the sorting. The elimination is what makes the sorting possible, and any proposal to enrich the metric is a proposal to disable the machinery it feeds.

THE ENGINEERING CONFESSION
The same civilization that discards direction in its human measurements preserves it wherever discarding would break something it needs.
Satellite attitude control, spacecraft navigation, robotics, molecular modelling, computer graphics: each requires tracking rotation without losing the information the eliminations remove. The direction the rotation proceeded. The order in which the operations occurred. The full independence that makes moving differently in different dimensions possible.
Apply the eliminations there and the control fails, and the failure has a name in the field: gimbal lock, the loss of a degree of freedom that makes certain orientations unreachable.
So the split is documentary rather than argued. The engineering preserves what the eliminations remove. Human measurement discards it.
A satellite that discarded directional information would drift. A credit score that preserved directional information would carry the creature's actual history, the reversals and the context, and the sorting would become impossible.
The confession is that the machinery already knows the discarded dimensions are real. It keeps them wherever losing them would cost it something, and drops them wherever losing them is the point.

EACH FACE REQUIRES IT
The eliminations are not one face's operation. They are what all three faces require in order to receive a creature at all.
God Says needs them to convert the singular creature into a member of a category that can be judged. She enters the confessional as a number.
Nature Says needs them to convert testimony into reproducible data. She enters the laboratory as a data point.
The Market Says needs them to convert participation into a transaction. She enters the market as a price.
And attraction is foreclosed at every stage. The metric measures how far. It cannot hold what draws. The creature measured by it is a creature whose future has been replaced by her position.

THE DEPENDENCE
Each metric stands in the gap between the reality it requires and the number it produces.
The credit machinery depends on the creature being more than a number while processing her as nothing but a number. National accounting depends on ecological function while rendering ecological function invisible. The body index depends on the body being a living creature while measuring it as a static ratio.
Read the three together. Every one of them draws on what it has declared does not register, and the declaration is what lets the drawing go unpriced.

The number enters the channel. The channel processes the number. The channel returns a decision.
And what the creature actually is, her quality, her testimony, her participation and what draws her, does not appear on any ledger the channel can read, which is not an oversight in the channel. It is the specification the number was manufactured to.
