What is structurally necessary for the effort to be other than a forgery, and is absent. Not what would improve it. What is required for it to be the thing it names.

A forgery is not assembled by adding falsehood. It is assembled by deleting that which costs the most and retaining everything else, and everything else is retained precisely because everything else was nearly free.
So the diagnostic is a single question, and it is put to the structure rather than to the speaker.
What would have to be present for this to be what it says it is? Then: is it present?
The answer does not require access to anyone's intentions, does not depend on sincerity, and is not a claim about a mind.
It is an observation about a member that is either bearing load or is not there.

WHY ABSENCE IS THE INFORMATIVE SIDE
A rendering is complete. Everything present in it is exactly what the configuration could carry, which means presence is guaranteed and tells the creature nothing except the capacity of what rendered it. A full account, a fluent argument, a coherent frame: each of these is what a rendering always produces, because producing them is what a rendering is.
And the rendering does not announce its edge. It presents its limit as the limit of the real, so the edge is the one thing it cannot show and the one thing that would show it to be a rendering.
Which leaves exactly one place where it is legible as a rendering: at what it does not contain. The content is uninformative because it was assured. The absence is informative because it marks where the carrying stopped. Reading the content and reading the edge are two different operations, and only the second reaches the operation that produced both.

THE COST SIGNATURE
What is missing is always the part that costs.
This is not a tendency and it is not cynicism about motives.
It follows from how a counterfeit is made. The counterfeit exists because something was wanted at a price the wanting would not pay, so the priced member is the one taken out, and the rest is kept because the rest was already nearly free. Which means the not-there can be located without any inventory of the corpus's tests: find what in this would have cost the producer something, and check whether it is present.
Run it and the pattern is uniform.
The kindness that stopped nothing: stopping is the priced member. The progress with no arrival: arriving is priced. The both-and: the cut is priced. The franchise image of the forge: the crossing is priced. The reform: the cessation is priced. The alongside: ending the alongside is priced.
And the counterfeit's own advertised virtues are the tell read from the other side.
It is cheaper, faster, more scalable, more replicable, available on demand, and pleasant to receive.
Each of those is a description of what is left when the expensive member has been removed.

IT IS NOT THE NOT-YET
The two are opposites and the configuration depends on the confusion.
The not-yet is the horizon's grammar. It converts an absence into a schedule, and a scheduled absence is not an absence at all but a stage, with a receipt issued at every tick to confirm that the destination is real. The line recedes and the walking is booked as approach.
The not-there has no future tense. It says the member is absent now, that its absence is structural rather than developmental, and that nothing arriving later would be the same member, because a crossing deferred is not a crossing that has not happened yet. It is a crossing that is not what this is.
Which is why the standard defence against a not-there is to convert it into a not-yet. We are working on that. That is the next phase. We are on a journey. It is emergent. The conversion is the whole of the reply, every time, and it can be recognised in one move: an absence has been given a date.
There is no separate entry for the not-yet, and there should not be. It is the horizon, and the horizon is already carried.

IT DOES NOT ENGAGE THE CONTENT
Bullshit is unbounded in volume and cheap to produce, and refutation loses on cost by construction: every claim answered can be replaced by two more, and the answering is more expensive than the producing.
The not-there does not enter that exchange. It makes no claim about what was said and offers no correction to it. It asks what is required and observes that the requirement is unmet, and that observation costs one sentence whether the production was a paragraph or a decade of it. Volume is not a defence against it, because volume was never the subject.
This is also why it cannot be answered by more content, which is the only currency the producer has. More is exactly what a missing load-bearing member is unaffected by.
And it is why the reply, when it comes, is almost never about the structure. It is about the one who named it: the tone, the timing, the divisiveness, the failure to hold the tension. The conversion of what was reported into an examination of who reported it is the signature of a not-there that landed.

A MISSING MEMBER IS NOT AN EMPTY ROOM
The not-there is not a vacancy, and the distinction is load-bearing.
A vacancy is a cleared cell on the grid: a position vacated, available, and filled within the hour by whatever was standing nearby. It is a to.
The not-there is a member absent from a structure that claims to stand. Nothing is available and nothing is waiting to be filled. What is being said is that the thing does not hold, and the not-holding is present tense and immediate. A room can be furnished. A structure with the member out does not become sound by adding anything except that member, at its price.

CONVINCEMENT RUNS THE OTHER WAY FROM CONQUEST
Convince is convincere: com- as intensive with vincere, to conquer. It entered English in the 1520s meaning to overcome in argument, and drifted toward persuade by argument or evidence around 1600.
Convict is the same verb, earlier, meaning to prove wrongdoing before it specialized into legal guilt. To convince is to convict is to conquer, and the gentle modern sense is a conquest word with the conquest sanded off.
So the configuration convinces, in the word's own meaning. It overcomes with what is present. It produces the complete account, wins the case, and the completeness is the conquest, which is why its persuasion feels like the lifting of confusion rather than like being defeated.
Convincement among Friends runs the other way from the same root. It is not argued and not won. It arrives where nothing is being produced: no liturgy, no clergy, no programme, no case put. The creature is overcome by what she yields to rather than by what conquers her, and the overcoming happens in the silence, which is to say in the absence of the produced thing.
Two directions from one verb, distinguished by whether the overcoming runs on presence or on its absence. Which is why the same instrument reads both ends. The forgery is convicted by what is missing from it. The creature is convinced where nothing is put. Neither of these is on the page, and the configuration's whole mode is the page.

Eight questions, one operation.
Each names the member whose absence makes the rendering a forgery, and each is checkable without reference to what anyone meant. The tests were not assembled from a method. The method was there before it was named, which is the ordinary way a configuration becomes visible: by being used until the using has a shape.

The configuration is not vulnerable to being contradicted, because contradiction is content and content is what it manufactures. It is vulnerable at one point only, which is the place its own completeness cannot reach: the member it had to take out in order to have the thing at all. Naming that member is not an accusation and not an argument. It is a report that the structure does not stand, delivered in the only register the production has no answer to, and the answer that comes back will be about the one who delivered it.
