The creature is handed responsibility for another's becoming, and the cessation of what he does to her is named as its deliverable. What she is asked to love is the version of him that has not arrived, and the arrival is her job.

The offer is made gently and it is made at the point of injury. What he did is not the man. The man is what he would have been had something not been thwarted in him, and that figure, the one who never arrived, is the true object. Hold him in view. Love him. Work towards him.
The work is then given to her.
Nothing in the offer is presented as a burden. It is presented as the larger view, the one available only to someone who can see past her own position, and refusing it is available only as smallness. She is not asked to excuse what was done. She is asked to take charge of the becoming of the one who did it, and to accept his becoming as the remedy for what he did.

THE FIGURE THAT NEVER ARRIVED
The man she is asked to love is a counterfactual and therefore has no defects.
Nothing he did constrains him, because he did nothing. Every quality can be assigned to him freely: he is generous, he is honest, he is capable of tenderness, he would have been a good father. There is no record to check him against and no act of his to weigh, so he can be given whatever the situation requires him to have.
Set beside any actual person, including her, the figure wins every comparison, because it was built after the fact out of exactly what was missing. What she is holding in view is not a person. It is the negative space of her own injury, filled in and given a name, and she is asked to love it more accurately than she loves the account of what happened to her.

THE DELIVERABLE IS HIS STOPPING
The assignment carries a purpose, and the purpose is what makes it an instrument rather than a sentiment.
He will stop when he is whole. So her safety is downstream of his development, and the development is work, and the work has been handed to her. Understand him better. Reach the part of him that is not this. Do not provoke the part that is. Hold the vision of the man he could be steadily enough that he can find it.
There is no completion condition. No amount of the labor is ever demonstrably enough, because the only measure of its sufficiency is whether he stops, and that measurement is taken by him and reported at his discretion. Every recurrence is then evidence about her work rather than about his conduct, and the more skilled she becomes at the labor, the more fully the continuing harm belongs to her.
And she cannot resign. Leaving the job is not leaving a job. It is abandoning him at the moment he was closest to arriving.

THE POSITION IT RECRUITS HER INTO
The assignment has a location in the rotation, and the location is not new.
The war body consumes. The stone body is consumed. The third body receives what is left of the heat, warms it, and returns it to service, and that circuit is what makes the other two sustainable. What the offer describes, in the vocabulary of redemption, is the third position, and it is describing it as the destination.
Her yielding is real, which is why the offer takes hold and why telling her the compassion is counterfeit does not reach it. The grip did open in her. What did not happen is anything coming back, and being arrested after the opening is not the same condition as never having opened, though the two are constantly treated as one.
And the yielding-field that would have formed near her own heart is relocated to the space between her and him, where she is asked to hold it steadily enough for him to find his way to it. What would have kindled in her is spent on the interval, and the interval is positioned where he is, which is the reason nothing kindles and the reason she cannot say what is missing while everything appears to be working.
This is the one of the three that looks like the joy body, and that resemblance is the entire sales mechanism. Redemption is the word available because from inside the position it does not look like a death.

THE DIRECTION IS THE OPERATION
Nothing here requires anything of him.
He is not present for the assignment. He does not have to agree to it, perform it, fund it, or know it is occurring. He is not asked to give an account, to change a practice, to make anything good, or to stop. The one capacity he retains in full is the capacity to continue, and the offer contains no instrument pointed at it.
The offer contains one instrument, and it is pointed at her. She does the seeing, the holding, the forbearing and the consecrating. A division of labor in which all of it is done by the injured party and none by the one who injured her is not a spiritual insight. It is an assignment, and it is the same one she was already carrying.

THE SAME ASSIGNMENT, FUNDED
At scale the labor is paid for, and what the money buys is the becoming of the ones who hold.
Convenings, fellowships, retreats and programs take as their subject the maturity, the consciousness, the interior development and the leadership capacity of the parties whose conduct is the matter. The projected deliverable is unchanged: when they are whole enough, the harm will ease. The timeline is theirs, the assessment is theirs, and the money is theirs, because the repair of the one who trespasses is paid for out of the proceeds of the trespass.
The room is warm, and the warmth is how the fee is collected. Admission is conditioned on the boot never being mentioned. Nobody states the condition, and everyone present can locate the line exactly, because naming what he does is the one thing that would cool the room. Those who have been harmed are welcome, and they are welcome as participants in his development.
What is sold as a seat at the table is the job she was already doing at home, with catering and a program, and the price of the seat is that the conduct is never raised in the room where the funding is decided.

NO DEBT IS EVER POSTED
Release presupposes a posting. Something was taken, it was written down, and the holder of the claim lets it go.
This runs before any of that. By the time she is asked to love the unrealized man, the harm has already been reclassified as a thwarting that happened to him, so there is no taking to record and no one from whom anything could be released. The account closes with no entry on either side, and the closing is performed by the creditor, who has been told she is not one.
That is what distinguishes it from any real act of release, and it is why it is offered so often to people who would never accept an excuse. There is nothing to excuse. The wrong has been described out of the category of things that can be owed.

THE UNIVERSAL SOLVENT
Then the specific case is dissolved into the general one.
Everyone's life holds possibilities that were never realized. Everyone has wasted years and made choices that foreclosed something. Set the injury beside that and it is no longer a trespass with a party on each side. It is one more instance of the ordinary tragedy of unrealization, and to insist on its particularity is to have failed to grasp the universal.
The move is true in the way that swallows the case: nothing in it is false, and what it does is dissolve the one relation in which something was done by somebody to somebody. A general condition has no defendant.

AFTER HE IS DEAD
The clearest form of the operation is the one performed on a memory, because by then nothing can be checked and nothing can change.
She is invited to grieve what he lost. Not what he took from her, and not what she lost, but the life he did not get to have, the goodness in him that was destroyed before it could reach anyone. The grief is real and its direction has been reversed: mourning that would have been hers to spend on her own losses is spent on his.
A creature can spend decades mourning the man who was never there and never once mourn what the one who was there did, and the exchange will present itself as having been the generous choice.

WHAT IS NOT BEING REFUSED
Compassion is not the object here, and neither is the recognition that a person who does harm was very often harmed first. Both of those are frequently true and neither of them is this.
The difference is order and direction. Compassion chosen by someone whose account has already been heard, whose claim is already posted, and who is under no obligation to produce a change in anyone, is an act performed from a standing position. What is named here arrives before any of that, in place of all of it, and carries a deliverable.
The test is single: is anything required of him, and is her safety contingent on work she is doing. Where the answer is no and yes, the compassion is not the thing being offered. It is the instrument being used.

The assignment is not experienced as one. It arrives as depth, as the mature reading, as what a person capable of the long view can see, and each of those is a register in which refusing it sounds like a confession about her.
She will be told she is bitter, or stuck, or unable to let go. What she is actually declining is a job she did not take, whose only proof of completion is a change in someone else, and whose entire term she is to serve inside the reach of the one she is serving it for.
