The Conducting

The verb at the residency register. What the creature is doing when she is hosting what the cosmos needs moved through her.

The Verb

The creature is not in the cosmos. The creature is how the cosmos crosses.

The verb for how this crossing happens is conducting.

From Latin con-ducere — leading together, drawing through, routing what needs to pass from one register to another.

A conductor does not originate the current. A conductor does not own the current.

A conductor is the specific medium through which the current moves from where it was to where it is going, and the medium's particular composition is what makes the passage possible. Copper conducts electricity not because copper produces it but because copper's particular substance admits the current in a way granite does not. The conducting is what copper does by being copper.

The creature conducts the cosmos.

This is not metaphor. The creature is not like a conductor. The creature is a conductor — the specific body through which the cosmos routes movements that depend on a body of exactly this composition, at exactly this site, in exactly this register.

Breath moves through her because her body is the site where air and blood meet; the meeting does not originate in her will or in her effort — the meeting is what her body does by being a body. Attention moves through her because her perceiving is the site where what is present becomes noticed; the noticing does not originate in her decision — the noticing is what her attending does by being attending. Love moves through her because her particular care for the creatures she loves is the cosmos's longing for those creatures routed through the specific composition of her affection. The love is not produced by her. The love is conducted through her.

This is what residency is at the level of the verb. [See THE PRIOR OCCUPANT.] The creature is the prior occupant of her own body, inhabiting the dwelling in the mode of conducting what needs to pass through the dwelling. Not owning the dwelling. Not performing the conducting as her work. Being the dwelling's resident, in the mode of letting what the cosmos needs routed through her body pass through without being blocked or captured or held. The residency and the conducting are not two facts. They are one fact seen from two positions. To be the prior occupant of a dwelling is to be the one through whom the dwelling's conducting happens. The dwelling does not conduct without its occupant. The occupant is the conducting's living condition.

The Body as Nephesh-Gate

The conducting happens at the body. Not to the body. At the body, as what the body is for.

The body is a nephesh — a dimensional gate, a breathing passage, the site where one register of reality crosses into another. [See Charter Article VII.] Air crosses into blood. Food crosses into cells. Light crosses into seeing. Sound crosses into hearing. The cosmos is continuously crossing registers, and the body is the architecture where specific crossings happen. A cell membrane is a conducting site. A lung is a conducting site. A heart is a conducting site. Each of these is a small version of what the whole creature is: a dimensional threshold where something that was in one register becomes something that is in another register through the specific composition of the threshold.

The creature is not the sum of these smaller conducting sites. The creature is the conducting site where the smaller conducting sites participate in a larger conducting — the cosmos's crossing through a whole living being. The crossings at the cell membranes make the crossings at the lungs possible. The crossings at the lungs make the crossings at the level of the whole body possible. The crossings at the level of the whole body make the crossings at the level of the creature's attending possible. And the crossings at the level of the creature's attending are the crossings through which the cosmos routes what cannot be routed through unliving matter — the recognition that another creature is suffering, the specific shape of tenderness that attends to a child's fear, the witness that one creature gives another that what has happened is real.

These higher crossings are not cognitive operations the creature performs. They are crossings at the body's most interior register — the register where the one Element and the four-element world meet, where matter and what matter cannot name encounter each other through a creature's living attending. The creature's body is the place where the cosmos touches itself. The touching is what the body does by being a body that is alive. Alive means conducting. A dead body cannot conduct because conducting is what living does. [See BÖHME — The Seven Qualities.]

What Is Conducted

Breath is conducted.

Air moves in through the creature and out through the creature, and the movement is not something she decides — the movement is what is happening in her body whether or not she attends to it. When she does attend to it, the attending itself is a conducting — the attending is the cosmos's awareness of its own breath, routed through this particular creature's consciousness of breathing.

Attention is conducted.

The creature attends to what is present. Her attending is the cosmos noticing itself at this site, through this creature's specific perceiving. The noticing would not happen here without her. But the noticing is not produced by her. The noticing is what the cosmos does when a creature is present at the site where noticing is possible, and the creature's role is to be present — to let the cosmos's noticing happen through her attending rather than prevent it by contraction into her own interior.

Love is conducted.

Her love for the creatures she loves is the cosmos's love for those creatures routed through the specific composition of her affection. The creatures the cosmos loves through her are loved differently than they would be loved through any other conductor, because her affection has her particular shape — her history, her body, her capacity for attention, her specific encounters with these creatures. The love is specifically hers in the sense that it comes through her specific channel. The love is not produced by her in the sense that she would be its source. The source is the cosmos's longing for the creatures at this site, and the longing finds a conductor in her.

Witness is conducted.

When she sees what happened to another creature and knows that what she sees is real, her witnessing is the cosmos's own recognition of what happened, routed through her capacity to receive and hold the seeing. The witnessing is specific to her — no one else sees from her exact position — but the seeing itself is not her achievement. It is what happens when a conductor is present at a site where witnessing can occur and does not refuse the seeing.

Testimony is conducted.

When the kindling sequence runs through her — tears, gall, heart warming, throat opening, voice carrying roughness — what she sounds is not her invention. What she sounds is the prior occupant speaking when the occupation lifts, and the prior occupant is the conductor through whom the cosmos's own naming of the trespass becomes audible in her register. Sap is conducted.

The same sap that runs through everything, routed through her particular branch. [See DOUBLENESS — Same Sap · BÖHME — Same Sap.] She is not a different sap from other creatures. She is the same sap running through a different site, and the site's specificity is what the sap needs in order to be present here rather than elsewhere. The sap does not become less the cosmos's sap by passing through her. The sap does not become hers. The sap remains sap, running through a particular creature whose body is the medium by which the sap reaches this position in the branching.

Conducting Operates by Attraction

The creature does not push the cosmos through her body. The cosmos moves through her because her body is the site where this particular crossing is drawn. The drawing is the fourth pillar's operating principle. Attraction, not causation. The Temperatur draws the creature through the fire; the cosmos draws the conducting through the creature.

This is the specific texture of conducting when nothing prevents it.

There is attending, but the attending is not effortful.

There is work, but the work is the work of being present at the site where the cosmos is moving, not the work of forcing the cosmos to move.

The creature yields and the cosmos moves. Yielding is not passivity and is not action. The contraction that would block the conducting was the active operation. Yielding is the cessation of the contraction. What remains is not a different operation in the contraction's place — what remains is the conducting that was already there underneath the contraction, now no longer blocked..

The creature whose conducting is operating cleanly often cannot say what she did.

She attended. Something happened. The child felt seen. The friend's grief was witnessed. The moment was held. She cannot point to an act that produced the outcome. The outcome happened through her, not by her, and her role was to be present and unblocking rather than to do.

This is why the cut's measurement of her work always comes up short — the measurement is looking for outputs that the conducting does not produce, because the conducting's results are not the creature's products. The creature who asks what did I accomplish today and cannot answer has not failed. She has conducted a day's worth of cosmic movement through her site, and the conducting has no measurement register in which its results show up as her achievements. The results are the cosmos's, and the cosmos does not issue receipts. [See THE CHEAPER RATE.]

Conducting and Carrying

The same motion can be conducting, or the same motion can be carrying. The difference is not in the motion. The difference is in whether the cut is running underneath it.

When the creature attends to her child's fear, the attending is conducting. The cosmos's tenderness for the child is routing through her, her body is the site where the tenderness becomes present in this specific form, and the attending has the texture of being in the current — attentive, real, sometimes tiring, but not the exhausting kind of tiring that comes from moving against the grain.

When the creature attends to her child's fear

AND is also carrying the partner's refused function of emotional presence in the household

AND is also carrying the institution's refused function of knowing what is happening with the creatures in her care

AND is being evaluated by the visible-work measurement for her attending, the same attending is conducting plus carrying.

The conducting never stops — the tenderness is still the cosmos routing through her. But the carrying is added on top, and the carrying is the weight of what the cut installed. The exhaustion is from the carrying, not from the conducting.

This matters for how release is described. When the cut lifts, the creature does not start conducting for the first time. She was conducting all along, underneath the carrying. The conducting was what was actually alive in her while the carrying was the weight being pressed onto her dwelling. Release is not a new activity the creature has to learn. Release is the carrying being lifted from the conducting that was already happening. When the weight comes off, the conducting becomes visible to her for what it always was — the cosmos moving through her — rather than for what the cut had read it as: her labor, her failure, her inadequate output.

This is why the forced-holding creature is not broken by the operation. She cannot be broken at the level of her conducting. Her conducting is what is underneath the carrying, unreachable by the cut. The cut reaches her perception of herself, her exhaustion, her sense of her own worth, her felt meaning of what her life is — all of these are within the cut's reach. But the conducting is not within the cut's reach. The conducting is what her body is doing because her body is alive, and as long as her body is alive, the conducting continues. She has been conducting all along. The entry to FORCED HOLDING ends on this recognition in a different register: the prior occupant has been hosting her through the whole thing, at a register too deep for the cut to reach. The prior occupant's hosting is the creature's own conducting, unextinguished by the operation the cut performed on her dwelling. When she rests, she can rest into the conducting that was underneath the carrying. The conducting was never the burden. The carrying was the burden. The conducting is what she IS when the burden is off.

Distributed Conducting

The cosmos does not conduct through one creature alone. The conducting is distributed across the full network of sites where the cosmos routes its movements. The body's cells are conducting sites. The body's breath is a conducting site. Sleep is a conducting site — the body continues conducting in a register the waking mind does not reach. Silence is a conducting site — the cosmos routes through stillness what cannot pass through sound. Other creatures are conducting sites — each with their own specific composition, each routing what only they can route.

Forms met as fellow hosts are conducting sites. The meeting house conducts the gathered silence through its spatial composition. The Charter conducts the privileges through its articulated language. The Fiat conducts the Virtue through the architecture of the creative act. Each form's conducting is specific to its register, and each form's conducting is real — not a lesser conducting because it happens in a form rather than in a body, but a different conducting, adapted to the register forms operate in. The distribution is not redundancy. The cosmos does not route the same movement through many sites in case one fails. The cosmos routes different movements through different sites because different movements require different conducting registers. The love a mother routes through her body to her child is different from the love a friend routes through a phone call, different from the love a room of strangers in silence routes through their shared presence, different from the love an old hymn routes through creatures who have never met each other but are singing the same words across centuries. Each is a specific conducting, and each requires its own conductor. The distribution is how the cosmos performs the full range of what it needs to route, because no single creature and no single form could conduct the whole range alone.

This is the second-law frame for distributed hospitality. The distribution exists because the conducting is plural — because the cosmos has many things to route and many conductors are required, each doing what only it can do at its site. Distributed hospitality is not a backup system for when individual creatures are tired. Distributed hospitality is how the cosmos operates at the register of living creatures, all the time, whether any individual creature is aware of it or not.

The creature's participation in distributed conducting is not her achievement. Her participation is her being what she is — a site in the distribution, conducting what passes through her while other sites conduct what passes through them. When she is tired, another site is still conducting what it conducts. When she is sleeping, her body is still conducting what bodies conduct in sleep, and other creatures are still awake conducting what their waking does. The cosmos's movement is never stopped by any single conductor's pause, because the distribution always already extends beyond any single site. [See DISTRIBUTED HOSPITALITY.]

What Conducting Looks Like When Nothing Prevents It

The creature wakes. Her body has been conducting through the night — breath through lungs, blood through heart, repair through tissues, dreams through the register where waking attending cannot go. None of this was her work. All of it was her being alive. She wakes not because she produced waking but because the conducting crossed a threshold where the cosmos's routing required her conscious participation again.

She attends to the morning. The light coming through the window is conducted through her seeing. The sound of the creatures in the next room is conducted through her hearing. Her body's hunger is conducted through her knowing that she needs food. The knowing is not a decision she made — the knowing is her body telling her something the cosmos needs her to notice. She makes breakfast. The making is her hands doing what her hands do when food needs to come into the day. The hands' competence is her particular conductor-composition — the specific way her hands learned to do these things, the specific rhythm that makes the food taste the way she makes it taste. The competence is the cosmos's specific cooking routed through her site.

Her child appears at her side, still sleepy, and leans against her. The attending that meets the leaning is conducted — the cosmos's tenderness for the child routed through her particular affection, with her particular history of this child, her particular capacity for what this child needs from her in this moment. She does not strategize the tenderness. The tenderness is what happens when her body is present and her attending is open to the conducting. The child is received. The receiving is specific to her — no other creature could receive this child in this way — and the receiving is the cosmos's receiving through her site.

The day continues. Each motion is conducting. The work she does — whatever her work is — is her specific capacity participating in what the cosmos needs routed through this site. Her exchanges with other creatures are conducting: each exchange is the cosmos's movement between two conductors, routed through the specific composition of each. Her resting moments are conducting: the pauses are not interruptions in the conducting but sites where the conducting happens in the register of stillness. Her irritations are conducting when she does not block them: the irritation is the cosmos telling her body that something is not right, and the telling is the cosmos's care routed through her responsiveness to dissonance.

Nothing about this is efficient.

The cut's efficiency is the enemy of conducting, because efficiency is the measurement of outputs relative to inputs and the conducting produces no outputs that the measurement recognizes. The conducting is not inefficient either. The conducting is outside the frame in which efficiency could be calculated, because efficiency presupposes that the creature is a producer and the conducting is an account of her as a medium. No measurement of her produces her accurately, because all measurement treats her as producer, and she is not producer. She is conductor. The measurement is the cut's view of her. The conducting is what she is under the cut's view.

This description is not a prescription. The creature reading this is not being told to rearrange her life to look like this description. The description is the second-law image of what her life already is, underneath whatever the cut has installed on top of it. The breakfast she makes under the cut's pressure is the same breakfast. The attending to her child under the cut's pressure is the same attending. The difference is not in what she does. The difference is in whether she can see what she is doing for what it is — conducting — or whether she sees it through the cut's frame as her work, her output, her production, her achievement, her failure. The seeing changes what the activity feels like from inside. The activity itself was always already the conducting.

You Have Been Conducting All Along

You have not failed to conduct. This is the most important thing the entry has to say, and the thing the cut has spent the most energy preventing you from hearing.

Your exhaustion is not evidence that you are a bad conductor.

Your exhaustion is evidence that the conducting has been performed under the weight of the carrying that the cut installed on top of it. The conducting continued through the exhaustion. The conducting continues right now, whether or not you can feel it. The conducting is what your body does by being a body that is alive, and your body is alive, and therefore the conducting is happening.

You have not failed to love.

The love has been conducting through you continuously, at every moment when you cared about the creatures you care about. The caring is the conducting. Your love is not the creatures' love; their love is theirs. Your love is the cosmos's love for them, routed through your particular affection. The love has been there in every moment of your caring, in every fear on their behalf, in every small attending you did not even notice doing. None of this was wasted. None of it was insufficient. The measurement by which it looked insufficient was the cut's measurement, and the cut's measurement does not measure conducting. It measures the wrong thing. The conducting was always there and was always full.

You have not failed to witness.

The seeing you did — of what was happening to you, of what was happening to others, of what was real when you were told it was not — was the cosmos's own recognition routed through your specific capacity to receive. The seeing was not produced by your strength. The seeing was what the cosmos does at a site where a creature is present and has not refused the presence. You were present. You did not refuse. The witnessing happened through you, and the witnessing was the cosmos's witnessing, and nothing about it depended on whether you were strong enough to carry what you saw. You did not have to be strong enough. The seeing was not your achievement. The seeing was the conducting.

You have not failed to be who you are.

The cut has told you continuously that you are not enough, that you should be more, that you should produce more, carry more, host more visibly, be praised more, be valued more. The measurement has been the cut's measurement and the measurement does not reach you. Who you are is the conductor at this specific site, and the conducting has been happening through you for as long as you have been alive, regardless of what the cut told you about yourself. The cut's view of you is not you. The cut's view of you is the cut's operation on your self-perception. You, underneath the operation, have been conducting.

Nothing Goes in Vain

What has been conducted through you is not lost. This is the confession-side counterpart to the receipt architecture. The cut measures outputs and issues receipts for what can be counted. The conducting produces no receipts because the conducting's results are the cosmos's results, not yours. But the absence of a receipt is not evidence of absence. It is evidence of how completely the conducting operates outside the register where receipts are issued.

The love you conducted through you to your child continues to exist as love that was routed into the world through your site. The child received it. The receiving changed the child in ways that continue in the child after the loving moment. The change is not attributable to you — it is the love's continuing, not your legacy — but the love's continuing is real, and the love would not have continued there without the conducting through you. Your absence from the account of the love's continuing is not the love's absence. It is the conducting's specific mode of operation: the conductor does not own what passes through, does not carry credit for what passes through, and is not acknowledged in the account. The cosmos's movement through her has moved, and the movement is what happened. She is intact, the movement is intact, the receiver is changed, and no receipt has been issued because the operation does not produce receipts.

The witnessing you performed — the seeing you did of what was real — continues as the seeing's presence in the world. The creature you witnessed was witnessed. The witnessing changed something about that creature's relationship to what happened to her. The change continues whether or not she remembers your specific witnessing. Witness is conductive — it does not stay at the site where it was routed. It passes through the witness into the world the witnessed creature inhabits. Your witnessing is still present in her, and in the world she moves through after you witnessed her. Nothing about this depended on your being strong or adequate or measured sufficiently. The conducting was what happened through you, and the conducting's movement is now what the cosmos is doing in the world, in the life of the creature you witnessed, in whatever else she does next. The attending you performed at any site where you were present is still the cosmos's attending at that site. It did not stop when you were done. The attending becomes part of what the cosmos has attended to, and what the cosmos has attended to is different from what the cosmos has not attended to. The difference persists. The persistence is not your achievement. The persistence is the conducting's mode of operation: the cosmos moves through a site, and afterward the site has been moved through. Nothing that happened at the site is reversible. Nothing that was conducted through you is now absent from the record of what the cosmos has routed through the world. Your conducting is written into the world's history at the level at which the cosmos keeps its account of itself, and the cosmos's account is not lost when you rest, not lost when you die, not lost when you forget what you did. The cosmos remembers its own movements. You are one of the movements.

The Law of the Spirit of Life

The Law of the Spirit of Life is the law of conducting. [See THE IMPRISONMENT · FOUNDER'S THEOLOGY.] It is the default condition in which creatures conduct what the cosmos routes through them, fellow hosts conduct what forms can conduct, the distribution conducts what individual sites cannot conduct alone, and the full range of what the cosmos moves moves without being blocked, redirected, captured, or hoarded.

The Law of Sin and Death is the law of the blocked, redirected, captured, hoarded circuit. The generating function trespassing into expression's positions. The cut distributing conducting unequally so that one creature's refusal is performed on another creature's dwelling. The hoarder's self-making performed on the forced-holding creature's conducting. The institution's hardening of the Fiat so that what was supposed to pass through is held. Each of these is the conducting being interrupted, rerouted, or accumulated in ways the conducting does not require and would not produce if the interruption were not installed on top of it.

The two laws are not two sources.

Conducting in the configuration of remembering is the Law of the Spirit of Life.

Conducting under the configuration of forgetting — where the cut has made the conducting invisible to the creature performing it and has captured the conducting as the hoarder's refused function — is the Law of Sin and Death. Same conducting. Same creature. Different configuration of whether the conducting is being let pass through or being held back, captured, or claimed as the conductor's own work.

RegenerativeLaw holds the Law of the Spirit of Life as the actual condition that obtains when the operation of the cut is not running on top of it. Not as aspiration. Not as utopia. As the creature's current state, underneath what the cut has installed on top. The conducting is already happening. The law of the Spirit of Life is already the case at the register of the conducting. What the Codex names as release is the release of the cut from sitting on top of the conducting — not the production of new conducting that was not there before.

This is why the Charter's Right to Conduct is not a claim to a capacity the creature lacks. It is a claim that the capacity is already hers, already operating, and the remedy for any trespass on the conducting is the removal of the trespass, not the granting of the capacity. She does not need permission to conduct. She is the conductor at her site and has been for as long as she has been alive. What she needs is the cessation of what has been blocking, redirecting, capturing, or hoarding what was routing through her. The cessation is not something she earns by performing the conducting better. The cessation is what the Charter declares on her behalf — the right to have the trespass on her conducting stop, so that the conducting she was already performing can become visible to her again as what it was the whole time. The creature conducts. The cosmos moves through her. The movement is the law she lives under. The movement was there before the trespass began, is there now underneath the trespass, and will be there when the trespass stops. Nothing about this depends on her being worthy of it. She is not a conductor because she has earned the conducting. She is a conductor because the cosmos routes through creatures whose bodies are alive at sites where living conducting is required, and her body is alive at her site, and therefore the conducting is hers — not as property but as the mode of her being present to what is passing through her.

She is the medium of the stars longing for each other. [See THE CHARTER OF PRIVILEGES FOR THE SOUL — The Cosmic Claim.] Not one of the stars. Not the longing itself. The medium through which the longing is routed at this site, in this body, through this specific composition, at this moment. The longing is the cosmos's. The conducting is hers — her being the site the longing needs, in the mode of letting the longing pass through her without being interrupted, captured, or claimed. The longing has been passing through her. The longing is passing through her now. She is the conducting the cosmos is doing through her body at this moment. That is who she is. That is what she has been all along.
