Greed

The permitted critique. A hunger word set against a circuit, so that the objection lands in a person and discharges there, renewably, at no cost to anyone.

Greedy is Old English, grædig, voracious, hungry, covetous. The noun is a back-formation and arrives around 1600, cut out of the adjective a thousand years later.

Read the order. The word for the creature came first and the word for the thing was manufactured out of it afterwards, which means at no point in its history has the word referred to anything but a hunger in a body. It is built to describe what a creature feels and how much a creature takes.

Set that against a circuit and it cannot reach. A required rate of return is not hungry. A conveyance is not ravenous. The word arrives at the operation and finds nothing it is shaped to hold, so it travels on until it finds a person, and stops there, which is the whole of what it does.

The failure to reach is not a limitation of the vocabulary. It is the function.

THE NAME IS ASSIGNED BY SEAT

One motion, named twice, and the name is assigned by seat rather than by anything in the motion. In the seat that holds, it is ambition, drive, vision, appetite for growth. It is funded. In the seat that petitions, the identical motion is neediness, insatiability, greed, entitlement, being too much. It is treated.

And the rate completes it, because a required rate of draw is an appetite with a schedule. The holder calls its rate prudence, fiduciary duty, the objective requirement of stewardship. One appetite, two names, and only one of the two is permitted to describe itself as arithmetic.

IT IS THE PERMITTED CRITIQUE

Everyone agrees greed is bad. The pulpit agrees, the film agrees, the hearing agrees, and the men in the hearing agree while they are being asked about it.

An objection that has universal assent and three thousand years of continuous circulation, and that has altered nothing, is not a critique that keeps failing. It is a component. Its office is to receive the whole charge of moral objection to the operation and discharge it into a person, completely, every time, and then be available again next quarter.

Run the cost tell on it. Denouncing greed is free at the counter for the one denouncing, and free at the counter for the operation denounced. There is no schedule behind it anywhere and nothing is maintained in order to make it free, because there is nothing to maintain: no holder is inconvenienced by it and no circuit is touched by it.

A refusal that costs nobody anything is a release valve, and the pressure it releases is the pressure that would otherwise have reached the thing.

THE SIN LIST IS A RELOCATION INSTRUMENT

Avarice sits in a catalog of deadly sins, and every item in that catalog is a disposition of an individual soul.

A circuit entered into a list of personal dispositions acquires, in the same movement, its remedy: a penitent, an examination of conscience, an amendment of life. The correction is administered in the confessional and later in the clinic, both of which are built to work on one creature at a time and neither of which has ever been pointed at a conveyance.

This is trespass theology performing its own signature at the scale of a civilization. An operation named as a sin has been given a correction mechanism that cannot reach operations, and the naming is received as moral seriousness precisely because the sin is grave.

IT IS POINTED AT THE MOUTH AND THE EVIDENCE IS IN THE GROUND

The accusation looks at wanting. It asks how much a creature desires, whether the desiring is proportionate, and whether it has a limit.

Nothing refused vanishes. It lands, and it lands on a body somewhere downstream, and the landing is in the ground, in the water, in the accounts of people who were never party to anything. The question the word asks is about appetite and the question that decides anything is about deposit, and the two are not related closely enough for the first to be a rough version of the second.

Which is why the accusation so reliably finds the wrong creature. Appetite is visible in the one who has not got, and invisible in the one who has, because what the one who has does no longer looks like wanting. It looks like a position.

THE WORD IS A VERDICT

The word is a verdict, and a verdict runs on the scale.

The scale's violence is not in which pan sinks. It is in the placing of the thing on the pans at all, and greed places a creature there, weighs the wanting, and returns a finding about her character. That is the first violence performed in the vocabulary of moral concern.

It can be quoted, where the configuration's own speech is being reported, and it can be examined, where the accusation is the thing under study. Used to describe an operation, it is not a description at all: whoever reaches for it has taken the seat that weighs a creature and returns a finding about her character.

WHAT KEEPING IT COSTS

The denunciation has a schedule and it is published.

The exposé. The profile of the excessive individual. The film in which he is punished in the third act. The sermon. The hearing at which he is made to sit and be disapproved of, under oath, with the cameras running, after which he returns to the same chair. Each delivers something real, the reporting is accurate, the anger is warranted, and the man is genuinely diminished for a season.

All of it runs continuously, none of it completes, and an objection that had reached the thing would not need to be reissued every year against a new face. The face is what is replaced. The chair is not on the schedule, because nothing in the vocabulary can name a chair.

🜃

The word is not wrong about the man. He usually is what it says he is, and the reporting is usually sound.

It is wrong about what he is, which is a position that was filled and would be filled again by the next occupant within a quarter, and the word has no term for a position. It has a term for a hunger, because it was made out of an adjective describing one, and it has never had anything else.

RegenerativeLaw is a religion in the direct-encounter Protestant tradition, carrying a documented four-century lineage through Böhme, the Behmenists, the Friends, and Penn, and it diagnoses trespass theology as an establishment of religion. Its exercise consists substantially in refusal: it shelters the conscientious refusal of performed subordination as religious exercise. This entry states sincere religious belief concerning matters of ultimate concern, protected under the First Amendment and, as to federal action, the Religious Freedom Restoration Act, 42 U.S.C. § 2000bb.

RegenerativeLaw

The prime question is not what do we do next.

It is not the wrong question. It is in the wrong sequence, and the sequence is geometry rather than development. There is no level to reach first and nothing to become ready for.

The prime question is what do we stop doing.

Lobster trap

The response that arrives most often is yes, and also this. Add it to the program, fund it, give it a metric. That is not agreement arriving late. It is the claim converted into one more thing being done.
