On average is a jettison rule. The word does not begin in mathematics; it begins at sea, and it begins as loss.
General average is the maritime doctrine — Rhodian, then Roman lex Rhodia de iactu, then black-letter to this day — by which all parties to a common sea venture share, pro rata, the loss of cargo voluntarily thrown overboard to save the ship.
The individual sacrifice is dissolved into the whole so the venture survives.
The arithmetic mean is that rule generalized until it forgets it was ever about a ship: the loss-distribution abstracted, the jettison scrubbed off, the pro-rata left standing as though it had always been a neutral operation on numbers.
It was never neutral and never only numbers. It is the rule for making a thrown-overboard body disappear into a distribution, and the abstraction is the forgetting. (The word itself carries the loss: average descends through avaria from, most likely, the Arabic ʿawārīya, damaged goods — a resonance, not the load-bearing claim; the doctrine and the case below carry the weight.)

THE SPECIMEN
The Zong is to this operation what Jefferson's letter is to return: the case where the ledger transcribes the operation in its own hand.
In 1781 the crew of the slave ship Zong threw some hundred and thirty enslaved people into the sea, and the owners filed an insurance claim for the loss — as general average, the jettison of cargo necessary to preserve the venture. Gregson v. Gilbert (1783) litigated it as a property and insurance question. The jettisoned were people; the ledger recorded them as an average claim; and the legal machinery processed the entry without the category straining, because general average is precisely the instrument for converting a sacrificed body into a shared, distributed, book-able loss. The seat dissolved into the number was born as the thing thrown into the sea to keep the venture afloat. When the entry says the average has no body, the Zong is where the body was — over the side, and in the claim.

THE ENSEMBLE, THE TRAJECTORY, THE BARRIER
The mechanism under the jettison is ergodicity, and it is exact. The ensemble average is what happens across many parallel instances at one moment; the time average is what happens to one instance over time. For an ergodic process the two are equal and the average predicts the trajectory. For a non-ergodic process they diverge, and the average describes a population no member of which exists.
What the configuration measures is mostly non-ergodic — ruin, dispossession, death are trajectories lived in time, and the ensemble across them belongs to no one who lived any. The clean case is the wager that pays on average and ruins in sequence: across a hundred players at one throw the average is positive; one player across a hundred throws is destroyed with certainty. Same numbers, opposite verdict — the ensemble speaks, the trajectory is lived.
And the average is non-ergodic by construction, because it was built to absorb a loss.
The absorbing barrier — the ruin from which there is no return — is the jettison. The ensemble cannot register it, because it lets the survivors' gains offset the absorbed as though the absorbed were still in play. But the absorbed are over the side. No downstream gain reaches them. The killed in Poland are not averaged back by the century's progress; the jettisoned are not un-thrown by the ship's safe arrival; the prior occupant is not un-dispossessed by the aggregate improvement. Death is real and total, and the average is the instrument that nets it against something else and reports the net as though the totality had not occurred.

THE NETTING
On average is the ledger's operation run at the level of the population, and it requires the first severance. The gaining trajectory and the ruined trajectory are entered in one book and summed, and only severed terms can be summed — a trajectory cannot be averaged against another while both are still attached to the bodies living them, so the bodies must first be converted to line-items. The prior occupant appears in the average only as the subtracted term, present in the arithmetic exactly to the extent of her subtraction and nowhere else. Ask any on average for the trajectories it summed: the gaining one has a body that gained, the ruined one a body that was ruined, and the average has no body — the second column folded into the first and glossed. The Zong claim is that netting made forensic: the jettisoned entered the book only as the loss to be distributed, their subtraction the whole of their appearance in it.

THE SEA
The average is maritime because the forgetting is maritime, and the sea is the severance drawn on the earth's surface. A field bears its occupants visibly — the dwelling, the fence, the grave, the worked ground. The sea bears nothing. It reads as no one's — mare liberum, the free sea, the surface belonging to all and therefore to whoever crosses it with force; Grotius wrote the doctrine in 1609 for the Dutch East India Company, to justify the taking.
The sea trains the eye to meet territory as surface rather than as residency, and the ship carries that training to the far shore, so that landfall arrives from the sea's ontology: the land approached as another surface to cross and stake, not as a place with an inside. This is why discovery is inherently maritime — you can only post the deed on a land you reach from outside, by water, as though it had no prior occupant. Marshall's Doctrine of Discovery is a sailor's doctrine. The forgetting is in the water before the anchor drops. And the Middle Passage is its nakedest form: the ocean is where the person is converted to cargo, natal alienation performed in the hold, so that what reaches the far port is already property with no prior existence the books must post — the same ocean that later throws that cargo over the side and claims it as average.

THE ADVENTURE
Average and adventure are the same instrument, born at the same sea.
The voyage requires what residency never does: a stake laid down in advance, across an ocean, against a return that may never come — and no one bearing that loss alone could survive it, so the loss was divided into shares and sold to men who never sailed.
That is the joint-stock company, and the Virginia Company of 1606 is the specimen: in its own charter the Adventurers staked money and stayed home, the Planters staked their persons and went, and both adventured — both put at risk for return. The word never meant thrill; it meant the staking. Venture capital is that word with the ad- worn off and the operation intact. Residency stakes nothing, because it crosses no distance and expects no return; it produces as it goes. So the adventurer of the maze is the maritime venturer, and the plant that finances nothing is the residency the sea-logic was built to overwrite. Adventuring-through-financing-into-others'-territory and being-in-relationship do not lie on one scale.

THE MEDIAN, THE GOLDEN AGE, THE POINT
On average names the operation whether the statistic is mean or median; the laundering is the aggregation, not the measure.
It is the same cut the configuration makes elsewhere under other names: the median is the flattened center against which the distinct tones are suppressed; the golden age is the era with its losses averaged out; the census wants a point, not a field, because a point can be summed and a field cannot; unison is the average in the register of sound, one tone standing for the chord. Each is on average performing its work in a different register — statistical, historical, administrative, acoustic — and each produces an aggregate no individual inhabits and that the configuration then treats as base reality. The body is a trajectory. The configuration reports the ensemble and lives none.

On average is the jettison generalized until it forgets the ship. Its smoothness is the measure of how many trajectories were thrown over the side to produce it. Ask it whose path it describes: no one's — it describes the population, and the population is not a thing that lives but a thing that is summed. The bodies live the trajectories. The average is what is reported instead of them, and the Zong is where you can still see the body it was reported instead of, going over the side and into the claim in a single motion.
